The first flat stage - about 200km in total - goes from Nottingham to a finish at the Knowsley Safari Park (with the already famous cows watching the possible bunch sprint decision). No easy day, but obviously the sprinters want to take their chance today:
Castaneda as the most complete sprinter here, coming with a great final leadout (Lay) as well.. Mezgec, Bennett, Kreder, maybe Haussler or Kip as his main contenders.
The first breakaway attempt by Biondo, Turchi, Power and Cruz has been pulled back quickly, with WCC showing interest to keep the thing together until the first intermediate sprint 9km into the stage. Which they do:
Castañeda taking it easily ahead of Vanderaerden, the only two sprinters going after this sprint here.
The break of the day is quickly formed soon after the sprint:
Beyer
Biondo (GC + 5.42)
Stash
Stash would take the first two mountain sprints, with Biondo taking the third: Pirazzi would not join the break, but the KoM-leader sprints for minor points at all of today's three sprints:
KoM#1 (Cat2): Stash 10, Biondo 8, Beyer 6, Pirazzi 4, Diggle 2
KoM#2 (Cat2): Stash 10, Beyer 8, Biondo 6, Pirazzi 4, Dabkowski 2
KoM#3 (Cat2): Biondo 10, Stash 8, Beyer 6, Magnusson 4, Pirazzi 2
Provisional KoM: Pirazzi 62, Magnusson 32, Hofer 30, Stash 28, Biondo 24, Beyer 20
The peloton on the chase, obviously: led by Kulczyk, WCC and Balkan with now 25km remaining. The breakaway's advantage is down to 1'17" and it looks like the peloton will reel them in soon..
Indeed: everything in control today and the three escapees didn't stand a chance eventually. We're up for a bunch sprint decision and here goes the trains with 2km to go:
Vandousselaere Lay Hacécky Castañeda Dabkowski Martinez Haussler Bennett Giacoppo Vanderaerden Angarita Brammeier Belletti Van Poppel Mezgec Corti Kreder Kip
1.2km to go and Lay/Castaneda going strong with Bennet hanging on!
A clear gap to the remaining sprinters: Mezgec, Angarita, Vanderaerden, Haussler in the leading positions..
Flamme rouge, Lay still leading Castaneda and still going with a good pace:
Mezgec ahead of Van Poppel, Angarita, Vanderaerden, Belletti, Haussler.. Kreder, Corti, Kip, Martinez and Giacoppo still in the mix..
Castaneda now leaving his leadout's wheel for his finishing kick! Bennett still there..
Van Poppel is fading, just like Haussler! Kreder moving forward..
Castaneda blows the competition! Bennett is cracking, just like Mezgec, who's dropping positions quickly!
Belletti now moving forward with also Wyss and Bennett/Dabkowski in good positions for a podium result. Kip trying to not getting boxed in..
And the cows have witnessed a dominating victory for Castañeda! A great leadout by Lay and a super strong sprint by himself. Leaving no doubt, who has been the best sprinter today.
Belletti vs Kreder and Bennett for the remaining podium spots then.. they are head-to-head..
A photo-finish between those three:
Kreder 2nd ahead of Belletti and Bennett!
Quite an impressive for particularly Belletti, but of course Kreder should be happy with a runner-up as well..
Kip a clear 5th ahead of Haussler, Angarita, Giacoppo, Vanderaerden and Martinez then.
Mezgec 12th behind Dabkowski, Van Poppel 14th behind Corti. Today's best leadout Lay finishing 15th eventually. Mission completed for him though.
Quite a big split happened on those final kilometres, as just 123 riders finished in the first peloton: the dropped group slowed down after the split, losing 3'43" eventually. Horrible news for a few minor GC contenders, who obviously didn't care too much:
Bratashcuk, Bille, Squire, Dennis and some TT specialists like Ma, Stannard and Hofer. Dennis once again losing big minutes and after cracking on yesterday's final kilometre, the apparently gave up on all GC ambitiouns. Quite a bummer for his team, that will now focus on tomorrow's timetrial.
