Baltic Chain Tour - Stage 4
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_000.png

The riders travelled to Sweden, where a stage in and around Stockholm will host the fourth stage of the Baltic Chain Tour. Another panflat stage at 180km, with no real difficulties across the route.

Cavendish leading the GC ahead of yesterday's breakaway winner De Haes and Ngandamba. Lo Cicero won the bunch sprint, with still Cavendish, Kennaugh, Nelson amongst the strongest. Van Asbroeck struggled yesterday, just like Vantomme. Guerao and Goss have been a non-show so far.

3km into the stage, we have the first crash - yet again:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Docker went down. They will be both back into the peloton quickly though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_002.jpg

It took just one rather late attempt for six escapees to form the break of the day - leading by already three minutes with 145km to go:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Andersen (GC's 66th, + 0.36)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Naesen (GC's 55th, + 0.35)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Kamberaj (GC's 95th, + 0.39)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Alawi (GC's 99th, + 0.39)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Aert (GC's 59th, + 0.35)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Restrepo (GC's 82nd, + 0.38)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kraftwerk going full-strength in the chase today, obviously not interested in another fail like yesterday. They are setting a high pace with now 36km to go, narrowing the gap to the breakaway to 1'23" at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_004.jpg

15km to go for the pack and while the gap to the escaping group remains at 1'18", the pace leads to a split in the peloton, with 20 riders being dropped from the pack:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Ngandamba (GC's 3rd)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Vandousselaere (GC's 9th)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Turgot (GC's 19th)

amongst those, who are suffering now! Ngandamba and Vadousselaere paying for their efforts yesterday? It seems like they do and they are quickly losing ground, now already two minutes down on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kulppi - Vastaranta and Netia now leading the pack, that is still a minute behind the breakaway with 6km to go! Another fail like yesterday? At least, the pace in the peloton is now significally higher than in the leading group..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_006.jpg

Good news for the sprinters then, as the breakaway is soon to be reeled in with 3km remaining! Valio and Netia as those teams, who eventually pulled them back in the last few kilometres:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_007.jpg

2km remaining and the whole picture has changed with the trains almost done already:

Kennaugh - Vinther
Franczak - Manninen
Keukeleire - Hayakawa
Nelson - Sobota
Van Asbroeck
Castaneda - Vantomme - De Haes

Cavendish struggling big time, just like Lo Cicero, who completely lost his own train here! Also Bouhanni losing some ground..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_008.jpg

1.5km to the finish and it's now Kennaugh in the leading position: Keukeleire, Hayakawa and a strong Manninen right behind!

Nelso, Van Asbroeck and Castaneda behind Keukeleire! Netia trying to somehow getting Vantomme back in contention and he's at least moving forward, like Lo Cicero.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_009.jpg

Kennaugh can't keep his speed and now, it's Nelson at the front! Van Asbroeck still right behind his wheel, while Keukeleire struggles to keep their pace..

Manninen and Hayakawa still going strong.. Vantomme and Lo Cicero slowly closing the gap. Cavendish further behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_010.jpg

Nelson holding on to his advantage on Van Asbroeck, who's trying to get past him now! Castaneda with a strong showing so far, just like Hayakawa..

Manninen still ahead of Lo Cicero and Vantomme, but they are significally faster now. Kennaugh and Keukeleire losing ground, Bouhanni, Sobota and Cavendish probably fighting for the last Top-10 spot..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_011.jpg

Nelson still ahead of Van Asbroeck with just a few metres to go!

Castaneda still on third, but Vantomme and Lo Cicero are coming closer with every metre.. Hayakawa might just miss out on a Top-5 with Manninen right behind him..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson takes this stage in Stockholm! Some super strong final 500metres from the Australian, who has been of the most consistent sprinters so far in this race. Well done.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Asbroeck with crucial bonifications as 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castañeda, who managed to hold off the nearing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero! What a great performance for Castaneda today. Some good news for WCC after losing Venturini and Bush with crashes here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hayakawa a strong 6th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Manninen! A superb sprint from Manninen in particular. Lo Cicero completely lost his position, but the young gun did his best to give his team a nice additional 7th place eventually. That's also valuable bonifications towards the U25 classification.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni completing the Top-10 ahead of Keukeleire, Sobota, Holloway and Guerao. Goss again a non-show as 20th.

A disappointing day for Kennaugh (who looked strong for a while) and Cavendish. The latter looked completely lost early into the bunch sprint and couldn't really fight back to a higher finish. His race-lead is in danger for sure..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/baltic/MG17_baltic_4_014.jpg

..it's not just in danger, it's gone: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson moves up to 1st in the GC with just one stage to come! Cavendish a narrow 2nd with just one second behind Nelson, Van Asbroeck moves up to 3rd with just a 2 seconds disadvantage. This will be a thrilling final stage tomorrow.

Lo Cicero still in contention for the GC with 10 seconds off Nelson as 4th, De Haes dropped to 5th, Kennaugh to 6th. With the earlier mentioned Ngandamba and Vandousselaere losing minutes today, Zaraliev, Vantomme, Wisniowski and Vermote round up the provisional Top-10 now.
