We've now had three stages in a row where the break have survived. This stage is a puncher's paradise with short sharp climbs dotting the route. In fact, the riders will ride through a circuit with one longer climb and several further undulations six times. Will the break survive again or will the favourites flex their muscles here?
Afonso (Porto - Prio), Bartl and Canty is the break of the day.
Simon Yates has been dropped on the first climb itself! The whole Podium Ambition team is back pacing their leader. They eventually do make it back.
Riders keep getting dropped from the high paced peloton at regular intervals.
The break's lead is 2'3" with 100 km to go. We're on the plateau following the climb for the fourth circuit.
Hofland has to retire with illness.
A lot of riders got dropped on the fourth climb.
Jung and Shushemoin (GC 18th) attack out of the pack with 70 km to go.
50 km left. Edmondson attacks and catches Jung and Shushemoin.
5 km later, they are joined by S. Yates. He seems to have recovered from earlier.
The riders have together at the front of the race. The peloton are only 58" behind and chasing hard. We are at the top of the climb in the 5th circuit.
40 km. There is a split in the break. Here's where we stand:
E1 -> Bartl, Edmondson, Yates
E2 (36" ) -> Afonso (Porto - Prio)
E3 (1'16" ) -> Shushemoin, Canty, Jung
Peloton (1'41" ) -> 95 riders including all GC contenders
The second and third groups are caught with 35 km to go.
The break is caught entirely with 30 km left.
The acceleration to catch the break drops more riders from the peloton. It is down to just 80 riders now.
More riders get dropped as we move into the final 20 km. Shushemoin is dropped and is sure to fall in the GC standings now.
Many attack attempts follow, with Borges (Porto - Prio) and Prevar the latest. But the peloton don't allow anyone to break free. 18 km left for the 68 man peloton.
The peloton are about to start the last climb. 15 km left.
Beltran gets away just before the top of the climb. Adam Yates and Keinath also have a small gap to the pack. 9 km left.
Herklotz, Gesink and Boswell join E2.
S. Yates, Borges (Porto - Prio), Tratnik and Kolar are among the riders dropped from the peloton now.
Gazelle are pulling the peloton.
7 km. Paulus (GC 30th) and Mendes (stage 6 winner) are dropped.
5 km. Everyone except Beltran are caught by the pack. The latter's lead is 1'7".
4 km left for the pack. They trail by 58" and aren't very organized.
2 km for Beltran with a 51" gap.
800 meters. No sign of the peloton behind...
...as Adam Yates lead them onto the last turn.
Beltran takes it! Surprisingly, there's no celebration from the Colombian.
Reis (Porto - Prio) (GC 14th), Dyball (GC 20th) and Rabottini (GC 22nd) have been dropped.
700 meters left for the peloton. Rodriguez, Kangert and Lane lead them to the line.
We go eight wide towards the finish. The race is on for 2nd place and the bonus seconds.
And Gesink takes those. 2nd place for our leader. Keinath is 3rd, also picking up a few seconds' bonus. Kangert is 4th and Herklotz 5th. Demare has to settle for 6th.
Vakoc, Jo. Herrada, Rodrigues and Chiarello complete the top 10.
Today's winner - Eduard Alexander Beltran.
The Reis (Porto - Prio) group reached the line losing 2'3", seeing him drop to 16th and Dyball to 21st. Rabottini did not lose any GC position. Shushemoin lost more than 8' to fall to 38th in the GC.
Gesink extends his lead at the top of the standings, as well as his lead in the Points classification. Keinath moves into 3rd place in the latter.
