We've now had three stages in a row where the break have survived. This stage is a puncher's paradise with short sharp climbs dotting the route. In fact, the riders will ride through a circuit with one longer climb and several further undulations six times. Will the break survive again or will the favourites flex their muscles here?

Afonso (Porto - Prio), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Bartl and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Canty is the break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%202.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Simon Yates has been dropped on the first climb itself! The whole pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Podium Ambition team is back pacing their leader. They eventually do make it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%203.jpg

Riders keep getting dropped from the high paced peloton at regular intervals.

The break's lead is 2'3" with 100 km to go. We're on the plateau following the climb for the fourth circuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%204.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Hofland has to retire with illness.

A lot of riders got dropped on the fourth climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%205.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Jung and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Shushemoin (GC 18th) attack out of the pack with 70 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%206.jpg

50 km left. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Edmondson attacks and catches pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Jung and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Shushemoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%207.jpg

5 km later, they are joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png S. Yates. He seems to have recovered from earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%208.jpg

The riders have together at the front of the race. The peloton are only 58" behind and chasing hard. We are at the top of the climb in the 5th circuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%209.jpg

40 km. There is a split in the break. Here's where we stand:

E1 -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Yates
E2 (36" ) -> Afonso (Porto - Prio)
E3 (1'16" ) -> pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Shushemoin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Canty, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Jung
Peloton (1'41" ) -> 95 riders including all GC contenders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2010.jpg

The second and third groups are caught with 35 km to go.

The break is caught entirely with 30 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2011.jpg

The acceleration to catch the break drops more riders from the peloton. It is down to just 80 riders now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2012.jpg

More riders get dropped as we move into the final 20 km. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Shushemoin is dropped and is sure to fall in the GC standings now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2013.jpg

Many attack attempts follow, with Borges (Porto - Prio) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Prevar the latest. But the peloton don't allow anyone to break free. 18 km left for the 68 man peloton.

The peloton are about to start the last climb. 15 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Boswell join E2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png S. Yates, Borges (Porto - Prio), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Tratnik and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kolar are among the riders dropped from the peloton now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Gazelle are pulling the peloton.

7 km. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Paulus (GC 30th) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Mendes (stage 6 winner) are dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2019.jpg

5 km. Everyone except pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran are caught by the pack. The latter's lead is 1'7".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2020.jpg

4 km left for the pack. They trail by 58" and aren't very organized.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2021.jpg

2 km for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran with a 51" gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2022.jpg

800 meters. No sign of the peloton behind...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2023.jpg

...as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Adam Yates lead them onto the last turn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran takes it! Surprisingly, there's no celebration from the Colombian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2025.jpg

Reis (Porto - Prio) (GC 14th), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Dyball (GC 20th) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Rabottini (GC 22nd) have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2027.jpg

We go eight wide towards the finish. The race is on for 2nd place and the bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2028.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink takes those. 2nd place for our leader. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Keinath is 3rd, also picking up a few seconds' bonus. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kangert is 4th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz 5th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare has to settle for 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS8%2029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Jo. Herrada, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Rodrigues and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Chiarello complete the top 10.
