After a quiet stage last up for the GC, this one is expected to be quite eventful. The climb to the is a steep one and should see some gaps open up. Can Adam Yates hold on to his lead against his rivals? It needs to be another impressive ride from him to achieve it.
It's raining as we get underway.
Three riders get away after of couple of previous attempts were not able to go clear.
Domagalski
Haga
Nych
Lundgren, 3rd in the KOM, attacks and eventually reaches the break.
Suryadi has had a flat. Smith too suffered the same fate some time back. Both eventually make it back to the pack.
There's a crash with 100 km to go! Bartl, Favilli, Sarmiento, Iturria, Vangstad, Andriafenomananiaina, Aasvold and Antunes are the riders involved.
Antunes has to retire as a result!
Korsaeth, Kittel and Dempster have been dropped. There are more riders further back already.
Haga wins the first KOM sprint. Domagalski and Lundberg follow.
Nych has been dropped and is picked up by the pack before the peak. They trail by 2'56".
More TT specialists are getting dropped, including Jungels, Viennet and Olman. 128 riders remain in the peloton.
Ewan is also dropped. The rain has stopped.
2 km from the top of the second climb, Teuns attacks from the peloton.
Domagalski wins the second KOM sprint ahead of Haga and Lundberg.
Haga wins the intermediate sprint. Domagalski and Lundberg are 2nd and 3rd.
Dowsett, Dieteren and Pavarin are among the riders dropped next.
The peloton trails the break by 2'15" with 50 km left.
Teuns catches the break 10 km later. Lundberg has been dropped.
35 km left. Lundberg is caught by the peloton, who trail by 1'51" now.
Haga is dropped at the 20 km mark. The peloton still trail by nearly two minutes.
More riders are dropped now. Among them Felline, Hofland, Modolo and KOM leader Smith.
14 km to go. Haga is caught by the peloton. The break's lead is down to 39".
Another big crash! Aasvold, Boonratanathanakorn, Agnoli, Rabottini, Sembukutti, Hivert, Bongiorno, Bibby, Dyball, Priedler and Silva (porto - Prio) are the riders on the ground.
There were other riders who did not fall but were caught in the wreckage.
The confusion leads to a split in the pack. A smaller group of the GC favourites goes clear of the slowing peloton. This group consists of Demare, Tratnik, A.Yates, Kangert, Boswell, Heymes, Gesink, Furdi, Keinath, Herklotz, Haga, Nepomnyachsniy, Zordan, Nairo Quintana, Borges (Porto -Prio), Reis (Porto - Prio), Konrad, Beltran, Carthy and Moazemi.
The peloton itself consists of the crashing riders and notable names like Sanchez Gil, Vakoc, Dees, Meyer, Edmondson, Prevar, Goos, Dyrnes, Serry and S. Yates. They are 1'12" behind the break.
The break is caught by the group of GC favourites with 10 km to go.
Vakoc, Sanchez Gil, Dees and Edmondson have got up to the leading group from the peloton. The peloton are now more than 2' behind.
9 km. Huge acceleration from Gesink. He is followed by GC leader Yates, Keinath and Herklotz. Nepomnyachsniy is belatedly trying to bridge the gap.
Behind them, the peloton recover to catch the group ahead of them. The peloton is now 81 riders strong. Most of the riders involved in the latest crash are back in this group.
7 km to go. The peloton has split again with a group of 13 riders chasing the leading duo.
The situation is as follows:
E1 -> Gesink, Adam Yates
E2 (23" ) -> Herklotz, Nepomnyachsniy, Keinath, Furdi, Beltran, Demare, Nairo Quintana, Moazemi, Kangert, Boswell, Borges (Porto - Prio), Tratnik, Zordan
E3 (1' ) -> Konrad
Peloton (1'24" ) -> T. Meyer, Reis (Porto - Prio), Haga, Vakoc, Dees, Sanchez Gil, Edmondson, Bibby + 21
A1 (2'4" ) -> Serry, Preidler, S. Yates, Bongiorno + 22
5.5 km left now. Yates has been dropped by Gesink and caught by Herklotz who has left the chase group behind. Demare and Borges (Porto - Prio) have been dropped by the afore-mentioned group.
4 km. Herklotz is chasing Gesink on his own. Yates is suffering now.
Boswell has been dropped by the chase group.
1.5 km. The chase group has split. This is where they stand for the moment...
E1 -> Gesink
E2 (14" ) -> Herklotz
E3 (1'44" ) -> A. Yates, N. Quintana, Nepomnyachsniy, Keinath, Beltran, Moazemi
E4 (2'30" ) -> Reis (porto - Prio), Zordan, Choi, Kangert, Furdi, Tratnik
E5 (3'13" ) -> Chiarello, Bartl, Bibby, Boswell
It is a two way battle for the win now.
Quintana and Beltran attack their group.
Up ahead, Gesink holds on to his lead to win the stage! He will take the lead in the GC as well.
Herklotz gets home in 2nd. He will move up to 2nd in the GC too. He loses 15" to Gesink.
Beltran outsprints Quintana for 3rd. They lose over 2'.
A great recovery ride from Reis (Porto - Prio) in the closing kilometers. He takes 5th, ahead of Choi, who also made up some ground. Keinath is 7th with Nepomnyachsniy 8th.
Moazemi is 9th. Adam Yates crosses the line in 10th, losing 3'9" to Gesink.
Bartl, Kangert and Chiarello are the next to finish.
Today's winner and GC leader again - Robert Gesink.
Gesink and Herklotz mirror their performance in the stage with the GC. Their gap to the rest of the competition is quite big. Yates falls to 3rd. Keinath and Nepomnyachsniy move up to complete the top 5 at the expense of Kangert.
Gesink extends his lead in the Points classification. Haga and Domagalski enter the KOM race at 4th and 5th. Herklotz now leads the U25s.
Five riders - Anker Sorensen, Baska, Silva, Goos and Kolesnikov - missed the time limit. The last is a big loss for Ferrero, crashing out from 11th in the GC.
