Race favourite Gesink got off to the best of starts on Stage 1, winning the Prologue. Here again, he is the top favourite for the stage win. The hills on this stage are not very long or tough but there might be some small gaps at the end.
A three man break head out early without any response from the pack. They are
Zordan
Lundberg
Smith
Smith wins the first KOM sprint ahead of Lundberg and Zordan.
Smith wins the first intermediate sprint as well. The order is reversed behind him.
Zordan wins the second KOM sprint. Lundberg gets in ahead of Smith. Their lead is now 5'12".
Smith wins the second intermediate sprint. Zordan and Lundberg follow.
90 km to go for the peloton. Korsaeth, Olman and Manokov are the first riders to be dropped.
It's Smith, Zordan and Lundberg, the order through the next KOM point.
eBuddy, Moser and Orange are leading the peloton in the chase. The gap has dropped to 3'47".
Kittel has been dropped. Haga and Dempster are further back.
More riders are dropped on the descent leaving 122 riders in the peloton with just more than 30 km to go.
The break are starting the cat. 2 climb with the gap at 1'24".
Smith wins this KOM sprint as well with Zordan and Lundberg following.
Viennet has been dropped. Also Konrad.
Next to be dropped is Jungels.
And now, Gunman.
20 km left for the peloton. 77 riders still in the front group. Gazelle, Puma, Compal, Moser and Vesuvio sharing the pace-making. eBuddy are conspicuously absent. Gesink is attentive though.
Zordan wins the third intermediate sprint. Lundgren is 2nd, Smith is 3rd.
10 km left. The break's lead is down to 49" and they can see the peloton when they look back.
Keinath, Herklotz and Gesink is the order at the fifth KOM point as the pack swallow up the break. 9 km left.
The lead riders continue their acceleration and five of them go clear. They are
Keinath
Herklotz
Gesink
A. Yates
Kangert
Behind them, four riders have got a gap to the peloton and are riding with the break.
Bibby
Nepomnyachsniy
Zordan
Lundgren
Choi
Smith
Nairo Quintana
They are 23" in arrears of the attackers.
The peloton are a further 19" behind.
Gesink attacks! 7 km to the line.
Meanwhile, the peloton catch the second group on the road.
But the cohesion doesn't last. The pack splits again just before the 5 km to go mark. Now we have a 27 man group chasing the five leaders. This group has Sanchez Gil, Beltran and Reis (Porto - Prio), among others.
The peloton is 34" behind E2.
2 km to go for the front five, who have come back together. They are already starting their sprint.
The second group now has 21 riders and is 34" behind.
The third group has Goos, Silva, Bartl, Nairo Quintana, Hosek, Vakoc, Pavarin and Bongiorno. They are 50" behind the leaders.
Behind them is the group containing Smith, Paulus, Egger, Dowsett, Paterski, Lundberg, Lane and Zordan.
Under the flamme rouge we go. Yates leads the front group onward.
And Yates gets a gap now! The situation is still more or less the same in the next groups. 700 meters to the finish.
Yates is already celebrating with 200 meters to go. The others are sprinting now but it's too late.
Yates takes an unlikely win against much more fancied opponents. Now we have to wait for the next group to finish to find out if he has taken the GC lead.
The next group comes to the line. Kangert outsprints Gesink for 2nd. Herklotz is 4th and Keinath is 5th.
They are 12" down, which means it is enough for Yates to take the overall lead!
Preidler gets 6th from the next group.
This group is 40" behind Yates.
Moazemi, Chiarello and Kolesnikov is 7th, 8th and 9th.
Nepomnyachsniy pips Demare to 10th. Bibby, Meyer and Prevar are next.
Today's winner and new GC leader - Adam Yates.
Yates takes the lead as Gesink falls to 2nd. Yates is also the U25s leader. Gesink extends his lead in the Points standings while Yates moves into 2nd. Smith is the KOM leader. Gazelle take the lead in the Team's standings.
