They are 23" in arrears of the attackers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2023.jpg

The peloton are a further 19" behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink attacks! 7 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2025.jpg

Meanwhile, the peloton catch the second group on the road.

But the cohesion doesn't last. The pack splits again just before the 5 km to go mark. Now we have a 27 man group chasing the five leaders. This group has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran and Reis (Porto - Prio), among others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2026.jpg

The peloton is 34" behind E2.

2 km to go for the front five, who have come back together. They are already starting their sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2027.jpg

The second group now has 21 riders and is 34" behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2029.jpg

The third group has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silva, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Nairo Quintana, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hosek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pavarin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Bongiorno. They are 50" behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2028.jpg

Behind them is the group containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Smith, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Paulus, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Dowsett, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Lundberg, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Zordan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2030.jpg

Under the flamme rouge we go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates leads the front group onward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2031.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates gets a gap now! The situation is still more or less the same in the next groups. 700 meters to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates is already celebrating with 200 meters to go. The others are sprinting now but it's too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates takes an unlikely win against much more fancied opponents. Now we have to wait for the next group to finish to find out if he has taken the GC lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2034.jpg

The next group comes to the line. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kangert outsprints pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz is 4th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Keinath is 5th.

They are 12" down, which means it is enough for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates to take the overall lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2035.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler gets 6th from the next group.

This group is 40" behind Yates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Nepomnyachsniy pips pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare to 10th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bibby, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Prevar are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Portugal/TDPS2%2038.jpg
