Stage 5: Back to hills without cobbles. The chances get better for breakaway riders day by day. But there is also room for important GC movement over the several hills and on the final ramp.

Another day full of blue sky and steep hills will guide us on the 5th stage of the Benelux Challenge from Riemst to Aywaille. On this rather short stage we expect significant gaps in the peloton, and it is rather unlikely that current GC leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Kreder will be in the lead after today. But let's see.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/Favos5.jpg

Early in the race we have a crash with an important man down: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Phillipe Gilbert. But the legend is back on his bike quickly, and makes it easily back into the peloton with the support of his full team.

Upfront a group of 6 has built and established an advantage:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/57.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Daspuntsag
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Connolly
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Rinner
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Kneisky
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Joeaar

There is absolutely no GC threat in that group, with the Irish sitting best in 68th 9 minutes down. Working in the pack are:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Kulczyk
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Goldcorp
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Azteca
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Proximus
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Philips

Sprint: Riemst
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Rinner6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Kneisky4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy2

130 km - 2:30
120 km - 2:45
110 km - 3:00
100 km - 3:25

The gap is increasing slower today. It also seems as if nobody is interested, as the riders just roll over the intermediate sprint just as they did on the first.

Sprint: Herve
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Joeaar4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Daspuntsag2

It is almost certain that the KOM points will see a bigger fight, eventhough none of the breakaway riders has collected any points so far.

90 km - 3:30
80 km - 3:00

And indeed they are reaching out for the first mountain points at the Cote de Foret:

Cat.4: Cote de Foret

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Daspuntsag5
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy3
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Connolly1

60 km - 2:55

On the Redoute, the famous Liege-Bastogne-Liege predecicive Hellig, we see that Godoy and Daspuntsag are clearly the strongest uphill riders in the break.

Cat.3: Cote de la Redoute
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Daspuntsag4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Connolly2

Unintentionally there was for a short time a group of 5 ahead including race leader Kreder, favourites Roux and Vichot and two helpers of the frenchmen, one of which was Gradek who pulled out the gap. They got taken in by Proximus quickly though; the Belgians have 4 riders in touch with the leaders in Wallays, Jallays, Backaert and de Vreese.

45 km - 2:00

Cat.4: Cote de Chambralles
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Daspuntsag5
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy3
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Rinner1

40 km - 3:10
35 km - 3:05

Once again the advantage is developing strangely, but the breakaway riders surely don't mind as they look better and better for success here.

Cat.4: Cote de Niaster
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy5
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Kneisky3
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Daspuntsag1

A short attack by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Nieve is taken back in with ease.

30 km - 2:15

Now the Redoute is coming up another time for the second passage. It could be a cracking moment as...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/58.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy leaves his breakaway companions on the road with the pack very well in sight already.

Cat.3: Cote de la Redoute
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Daspuntsag4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Kneisky2

They make it over the Redoute ahead of the pack though, which is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png De Vreese.

Situation with 25 kilometer to go:

Godoy
Daspuntsag + 1:31
Kneisky, Rinner, Joeaar, Connolly + 1:52
Peloton (88 riders) + 2:47

With 21 kilometers to go...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/59.jpg

...it's game over for the 5 breakaway riders excluding pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png De Vreese has done a fantastic job here.

20 km - 1:45
15 km - 0:55

This one will go to the pack. Who is going to attack first?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/60.jpg

Nobody really yet, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Sivori and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre (for whatever reasons) only go for the mountain points up the Chambralles.

Cat.4: Cote de Chambralles
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy5
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Sivori3
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Taborre1

With 10 kilometer to go everything is back together. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Gradek & Hollenstein are leading the pack when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux goes for the attack we have all been waiting for. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Kreder immediately on his wheel. So is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire, using it for...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/62.jpg

...a counterattack. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Davison shuts the gap down though, so it's anybodys race with 3 kilometers to go.

1.5 kilometer on the famous hill to Aywaille left. The race leader...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/63.jpg

...doesn't look too well positioned here though. And he suffers quite a bit on the uphill drag. 500 meters to go...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/64.jpg

...and it looks great for Reddit, who have both Simon and Monfort in the first line. Can they deliver a big one? Or does it go to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot, who'd take over the lead with a win or most likely even a podium. He's currently 5th!

It is not going to be...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/65.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Vichot though, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire who looks best. The two Reddis look well set for two podium spots, or can pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Rybakov, who's on brilliant form the whole race, take them away?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/66.jpg

Not today. It's a big one for the American, who raises his arms in joy. A glorious double podium for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Simon in second and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort in 3rd, which should lead to awesome GC positions. 4th to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Rybakov, and then...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/67.jpg

...there could be a gap to Vihot, who leads in the leaders group. We have to wait for the official result to see who finished where exactly, whether there are time gaps and how they display in terms of the overall standings. What clearly is there though is a group to the white jersey group of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per at least.

And the jury confirms: There is a gap given after Rybakov, hence the new GC leader will be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire. Which joy for the Azteca rider, who brings his team back on track for promotion ranks. Also a great job for Vichot to take over the points jersey. Sivori didn't really have to defend the mountain classification. Per just saved white at least for his team, that still looks set for a nice GC with Kreder in 4th. And remember: Tomorrow there will be enough bonifications on the line to still take the overall win for Kreder!

Let's close this one out though with the obligatory picture of todays winner: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Robbie Squire!
