The huge cobbled stage awaiting, and hills plaster the way. Can the pure puncheurs limit their losses? It is pretty unlikely that the best can resist the strongest cobblers, but hybrids may stand a chance. And could it be the first day for a breakaway win?

It's warm, it's sunny, no wind: Not really the classics weather some of the strongman you'd like. Hopefully that doesn't indicated a calm ride, but some carnage in the peloton today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/Favos4.jpg

Soon from the start the race is open for plenty of attacks. And already the first wave sticks, having several riders going clear:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Wu

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Katrasnik
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Venturini
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa

Those 12 riders quickly establish a lead of 4 minutes just 15 kilometers into the race. Polka-dot jersey pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Sivori is the best placed in GC sitting 5:19 down in 59th. Spotlight on the second best though especially, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa has a history in huge breakaway success in this race. He started the day as second best from the group 9 minutes down.

In the pack it's Xero and Philips taking up the pace. We see the names of Novardianto, Per, Drucker and Allegaert here at the front at the beginning. In tge group everybody is trying to go for the mountains classifications, while nobody bothers about the sprints.

160 km - 6:30

Early already we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Martin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Rodríguez dropped, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Yzeiraj can come back after a puncture.

The riders in the break already have issues to accelerate for the KOM here!

100km - 7:32

The first major split was occured by Drucker, who paces the peloton for like 70 kilometers now. Many notable riders like Kasa, Harrison, Thwaites, Haussler, Kneisky, R.Kreder, Chavanne are caught out at the moment, sitting 1:40 behind the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Petilli2

90 km - 7:05
80 km - 6:23

The second group has made it back, but there are groups falling out of the back time after time here. 88 riders left in the pack. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Tony Martin is sucked back into the peloton by Drucker/Per, who are riding a duo time trial now. Differdange is close, but maybe somebody should remind them that it's not the famous TT classic.

70 km - 5:24

Cat.3 Oude Kwaremont
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Yzeiraj4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Flaksis2

60 km - 4:50

Now it's 8 riders vs. Drucker & Per, all others back in the group. A reminder:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Venturini
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa is looking clearly the strongest, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Yzeiraj can really compete with him on the Kwaremont.

45 km - 2:40

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Venturini2

The mountains jersey was save already on the shoulders of Sivori, before the second last Kwaremont mountain sprint, still they go for it.

Split on a false flat!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/45.jpg

Philips finally made it, they have damaged quite some opponents. Still riders like Roux at the front, while surprisingly Schoonbrodt is caught out beneath the likes of van der Poel, Geschke, de Vreese and Anderson. They'd make it back soon though. Meanwhile the advantage of the break has grown a little again.

35 km - 3:15
30 km - 3:10

Another 3 riders have fallen behind from the break though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/46.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Petilli
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Sivori
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Wu

This leaves us with a group of 5 at the front. 5 kilometers later it's goodbye to...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/47.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Katrasnik. He gave it a good fight, but seems empty now.

Situation with 25 km to go:

Yzeitaj, Konwa, Venturini, Flaksis
Katrasnik + 0:30
Wu, Sivori, Petili + 2:00
Peloton (81 riders) + 2:48
Group van der Poel + 4:54

20 kilometers and now...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/48.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Flaksis is dead and gone. 2:41 for the break, this looks good but is far from over. Van der Poel made it back into the group. Still only Per and Drucker pacing for the whole day.

15 km - 3:00

Cat.3 Oude Kwaremont
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Yzeiraj6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Venturini4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa2

Only one passage of the Kwaremont left (the one to the finishing line) and we are yet to see an attack. The group has realed in Katrasnik. From the break it's now...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/49.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa trying to get clear and opening up 25 seconds quickly. It doesn't seem as if anybody can respond right now.

10 km - 3:30
7.5 km - 3:40
5 km - 3:30

What a move:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/50.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Yzeiraj has brought Konwa back on his own. Strange decision by the organisation to not take the lapped Benfatto out of the way though. 3 kilometers left and everything is back together. It is still Per and Drucker leading the pack! Flaksis has been taken back in.

2 km - 3:30

It's going to be between those 3. The Albanian leads them onto the cobbled section under the kite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/51.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Venturini has been rather quiet, surely he saved something for now hasn't he? He takes over the lead with 500 meters to go and powers uphill. Is this the sticking move?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/52.jpg

Yes! Nobody can answer back, and the Frenchman wins the day for World Cycling Centre. In a close one for second the glory goes to...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/53.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Yzeiraj, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Konwa has to settle for third. They may have tired each other out too much with that attack and chase, while Venturini played it smart. Further back...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/54.jpg

...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per leads the group on the final 800 meters. Of the favourites it's Kreder, Roux and Vichot surprisingly up there. And it's indeed...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/Benelux/55.jpg

...the Slovenian that leads in the pack in 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Aulas. A disappointing show by the cobblers today. Almost any GC candidate stayed safe today, and that rather surprisingly. The likes of Roux, Vichot and Kreder will surely like that, while it is a missed opportunity for many other. What an awesome display of control with just two and a half riders this was from Philips though, that after today surely deserve to keep that leaders jersey. They also got the white jersey now with workhouse pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per, surely a nice achievement for the young Slovenian.

Let's end the day with a picture of our winner though: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Clement Venturini!
