Benelux Challenge - Stage 2
Category: C2HC 6 Stages terrain: classics BeNeLux
We go onto the hills. First off is the longer but calmer hill stage, that finishes with a huge downhill part. So whoever sprints first will win. The question is: Who will be able to sprint first? Will it be a solo rider, a favourite group or even a bigger bunch? We have a very open race on this stage.
HI AC HI AC HI AC Roux78 75 Simon76 74 Anderson75 75 Monfort77 72 Rybakov76 72 Besada75 75 Squire77 71 Taborre76 72 Gaimon75 74 Diggle77 70 Lietaer76 71 Costa75 73 Grippo77 69 Gilbert76 69 Hollenstein75 73 Lejman77 68 Passalacqua76 69 Schoonbroodt75 72 Vichot76 80 Haavardsholm75 80 Geschke74 76 Hugentobler76 76 Wyss75 75 Gatto74 72
Roux, Vichot
Hugentobler, Squire, Geschke
M.Kreder, Gatto, Monfort, Haavardsholm, M. Wyss
Chavanne, Schoonbrodt, Simon, Grippo, Anderson, Gaimon
van Emden, Zoidl, D.Wyss, Kruopis, Harrison, Gilbert, Reus, Horton
On the roads from Schifflange to Walferdange we'll also face plenty of Category 4 climbs, that may predetermine the mountains classification already. Also important to see how fallen back riders from yesterday and the hill favourites react.
A sunny day again with no wind and beautiful surroundings on the colourful fields in Luxembourg. What a day to be on the bike! That is also exactly what the group of 3 had to think, that directly pulled away at the beginning of the race and had stabilized a 3 minute advantage after not more than 10 kilomters.
Robert
Sanogo
Sivori
Really diverse group with the African allrounder, the pure time triallist from Cycle Yorkshire and the Argentinian climber. Soon though two more riders are on the move to join the trio at the front: KOM leader Meeusen and yesterdays attacker Frankiny.
In behind another crash: Lejman and Rinner. For no reason the full Balkan Cycling Project drops back to ride Lejman back in. He canÄt be their best option for the GC, but also 3rd Kasa goes back to help him. They make it in without any trouble. More trouble for them as soon Bajc also drops back with a flat tire.
In behind it's mostly Xero chasing. But also shirts of Kulczyk and Aeropostal appear on the chase. Novardianto, Ngamoki and Vandenbergh very early working given their skillset.
150 km - 2:45
From the pack then also Jallays attacked upfront to join the group, and does so with surprising ease.
For the first mountain sprint it's Frankiny opening up, while Robert already immediately drops. Sanogo looked like the winner already, but Jallays could overtake him on the final meters.
Cat.4 : Napoleonsgaard Jallays5 Sanogo3 Sivori1
125 km - 3:15
On the second one it's Sivori now clearly the strongest, while Jallays suffers. Meeusen still without points in the KOM.
Cat.4 : Kaundorf Sivori5 Sanogo3 Frankiny1
110 km - 5:30
And in behind now a very interesting situation. Novardianto split the pack on the climb on his own, only 60 riders left upfront. He most notably dropped his teammate Diggle though, who sits 2 minutes behind now in a small group together with Taborre. 108 riders even further behind, such big names as Kruopis, Haussler, Kneisky, Chavanne, Bajc, van Emden, Smukulis, Hugentobler, Horton and R.Kreder caught out early! They have a deficit of over 3 minutes to the peloton!
At least the Xero/Statoil group makes it back in the pack, but the others still 3 minutes down. Upfront the group has only 3:45 left with 90 kilometers to go.
Cat.4 : Bigonville Sivori5 Frankiny3 Jallays1
Upfront the pace though still isn't too high, so in behind some riders are trying to push for the bridge between the two big groups. Kruopis, Horton, Bajc, Backaert, Torckler, Costa, Hugentobler. Wallays, Passalaqua, Schlegel, van Zandbeek in that move.
65 km - 2:30, 2:10
The intermediate sprint was uncontested from the break, while the following mountains sprint was an easy one for Sanogo.
Sprint Jallays6 Meeusen4 Frankiny2
Cat.4 : Kaizerbuch Sanogo5 Sivori3 Meeusen1
In behind the group are coming closer together, only 2 minutes between Peloton 1 & 2. Almost no help for Xero upfront, hence the issues in sustaining the gap.
And on the hill a single rider could make the junction: Andi Bajc! Somebody lost his wheel though, hence he really bridged it alone. Afterwards the groups stretched out again, and the falling back riders from the first bunch slowed down the second and we have a gap again that extended to 1'30.
Situation with 50 km to go:
Breakaway
Robert + 2'00
Peloton (66 riders) + 2'44
Hugentobler, Petrache, Joeaar, Visconti, Backaert + 3'54
Armee + 4'31
Group Chavanne, Ma, Krupois, Torckler, Kneisky, Sepulveder, Kreder, Vandewalle (27 riders) + 4'42
Group Haussler, van Zandbeek, Harrison, Marcato, Hofer, Goddaert, Mezgec, van Emden, Laizier, Martin (53 riders) + 5'51
Group D. Wyss + 8'00
Group Smukulis, Stannard + 10'07
Group Flaksis + 10'48
Soon the two first chasing groups merge. Still they are 2'15 behind the peloton. The 5 in front have 1'13 left with 40 km to go, it doesn't look great for them. It's still the same Xero trio of Novardianto, Ngamoki and Vandenbergh pulling though. Roux will have to donate them a nice little present after today.
Major slowup in the peloton with 30 to go! And 9 riders can come back: Costa, Horton, Petrache, Besada, Backaert, Meyer, Wallays, Visconti, Hugentobler are back in the pack.
The break has extended their advantage to 2:38 again with 30 kilomters to go, suddenly they look decent!
And more riders like Armee, Kruopis, Torckler and Thill can come back! In the front group it's farewell to Frankiny though, who drops off after a good run.
Cat.4 : GPM Jallays5 Sivori3 Sanogo1
10 kilometers left, and Novardianto is still leading the pack. The group lost Meeusen in the process as well now though.
He's 38 seconds behind his former companions and 25 seconds ahead of the bunch. Now it's the last climb of the race and another KOM. Still the break leading!
Cat.4 : GPM Jallays5 Sanogo3 Sivori1
Behind there is not the expected move by Roux, who relies on his helpers. Instead Vichot is trying something! Davison has brought everything back together though, including the break.
4,5 kilometers and Vichot kicks again. A decicive move? Again Davison to react for Roux.
But Vichot can sustain his lead for now. Still 9 seconds and almost under the kite with only the downhill to come. That should be enough, shouldn't it? Behind Wyss tries to launch Kreder while Davison leads out Roux.
But the Kiwi is too weak right now, Philips overpowers them completely. Geschke and Gatto on the right wheel, but it seems as if they're all too late for the win.
And they are! You say if you can't make it stick try it again. And the Frenchman did exactly that, punching forward another time and the move sticked. What a win for the Kulczyk star!
Only minor places today for Kreder and Geschke on the podium. Gatto and Wyss in the Top 5 too, while Roux really has to question his tactics today. He only comes in 8th on a day he could've made so much more selective towards the end.
It seems though that Philips has played it perfectly. The finish leader couldn't keep up with the pace, and thanks to bonifications Michel Kreder is the new race leader. He also takes the points jersey. Sivori in polka-dot now for SanCor, and van der Poel is in white for Löbau. Xero at least got the team classification lead here.
Let's say goodbye with a winners pic though: Arthur Vichot for Kulczyk!
