Benelux Challenge - Stage 1
Category: C2HC 6 Stages terrain: classics BeNeLux
A very warm welcome from the BeNeLux Challenge. The tour starts with a Prologue in Luxembourg, where the General Classment receives its basement, before on the next days the obstacles will sharpen the view. Today it's just 5,3 Kilometers in Luxembourg Ville. The big favourite for today is Sauber leader Chavanne.
Chavanne82 Martin78 Cruz76 Laizer76 Reus79 Meyer78 Goddaert76 Sepulveda76 Robert79 Mullen78 Hacecký76 Van Zandbeek76 Stannard79 Van Emden78 Kneisky76 Vandewalle76 Hofer78 Ma77 Kruopis76 Hochmann75
Chavanne
Reus, Stannard, Robert
van Emden, Meyer, Mullen, Martin, Hofer
Ma, Kruopis, Sepulveda, Hochmann
The first interesting notable time is set by Vandewalle, riding the stage in 7'41. But soon young hope Mathieu van der Poel is faster, coming in in 7'37. This indicates that probably a time around 7'30 should be needed to compete for the win. But we'll see for how long the youngster can sit in first on this calm & sunny day.
The next candidate for a strong time was Riccardo Zoidl, but same as Offredo he is down on van der Poel by some margin. Also Julien Simon can not compete right at the front. But then it is Eduardo Sepulveda setting a new best in 7'32! He is 4 seconds faster than the young Dutchman.
The next really interesting man was young Irish Ryan Mullen, surely a Top 3 hope for today. The Kulczyk rider is only third provisional though, 5 seconds down!
The next shot we have is from Ronan Van Zandbeek, indicating how the pretty steep ramp with 1km to go (up to 9.5 %) may have an influence on the final decision when it comes to blinks of an eye! Van Zandbeek takes over third from Mullen here s.t. with him.
Behind him provisional 5th for Nils Schomber. Rick Flens and Rinner can join lower top 10s in the provisional ranking, but surely they won't hold their positions. More spotlight will be on local hero Tom Thill, who really offers a nice skillset for both this prologue and the full tour. But he only is 7th provisional, 9 seconds down on Sepulveda.
More interestingly now it's Ian Stannards turn, definitely one of the favourites. But the ramp could hurt him, or does it? It does, he is also 4 seconds down and new provisional second. This must have been one hell of a time from Sepulveda!
Meanwhile a surprisingly strong Novardianto comes in new 6th, only one second slower than Ryan Mullen and already beating some of the big dogs. And then we suddenly have a new second, same time with Sepulveda. That is of extraordinary joy for the reporter, because it's an Estonian. Magnificant time by Gert Joeaar!
Now times may roll as GC threat Van Emden comes in. But it's only third for the Philips rider, s.t. with Stannard.
Just a short look over to the outfit of the day, that goes to Vivacom-rider Xhuliano Kamberaj. He finishes in 18th provisional.
And then it was Stelly Robert on the road, one of the favourites. But wait: Right ahead of him Gabor Kasa is stealing the show! He's the new provisional leader, the first to ride 7:30!
The cycle Yorkshire rider can not match that, but now sits in 4th 3 seconds down. Seems like another disappointing day for the Brits on an opening prologue. In Welle Jallays another outsider is far off the time. Meersman then joins the Top 10, while surprisingly Cameron Meyer can't! Same issues for Cruz and Laizer.
At this rate you have to imagine whether a major upset may be possible here, with so many riders already done. But you can't talk of such thing with Reus and Chavanne yet to start. But also Andreas Hofer is only 13th with 8 seconds back. What can Tony Martin do? He would have liked a much longer stage, but the hill has to be in his favour.
But no! He is sitting in 16th, 10 seconds down on Kasa! Hochmann, Dahlberg and Cuming all far away, when all of a sudden Haijun Ma sets a new fastest time. It must have been very close, as he is also at 7'30!
Behind him Drucker 15 seconds down at a very disappointing 35th. Harrison even worse, while Kruopis only just misses out on the Top 10 6 seconds down. Goddaert similarly close behind, while also Ford can't break the Top 20. Maximilian Beyer can do that however, as he sits in new 6th.
Then we have a long period of quiet moments, with nobody coming close to the Top 10. Only two riders with chances left really. And there he goes: Can Chavanne set a new record on the track? You'd love to see that happening from a Sauber perspective!
No! Heartbreak for him as he is 3 seconds down in 5th. What an upset for the team. One intermediate rider in Kneisky also could have some minor chances. But the Frenchman is also preferring the open flat roads, as he is 18th provisionally.
Now let's move to Kai Reus, the last man that could rid the victory of Ma. He looks very fast indeed on the track. And...
...he delivers! What a race, with the last starter taking the win away from what could have been a huge upset. Surely a great win for his team, especially as he was not the favourite with Chavanne on the startlist. But a lead in all jerseys will be a nice thing to start a tour with.
Chavanne can at least take white away. After the race the jury semed to have revided the timings as well, as Serbian champion Kasa is listed 2nd in the results. It must have been inredibly close between those 2, and imagine how the reactions at Reddit would've been without Reus beating the two of them!
