45 km/hr winds gust along the route as we get under way. Perfect conditions for carnage in the peloton!
Two riders attempt to form the breakaway - Polnicky and Bolivar. But they are reeled in.
Eventually Paulus, Orlov and Cheung form today's break. They already have a 2'38" lead over the pack.
Nothing much happens over the middle sections. The wind has also slowed down.
The peloton is very fast with many riders taking turns at the front. They currently trail by 5'23". The gap was over 8' some time back.
50 km to go now. The break's lead stands at 2'55".
Kuznetsov attacks from the peloton. He gets a 20" gap. 45 km to go.
He gets caught with 35 km to go but attacks again anyway! He is caught again.
The peloton trail the break by only 50" now.
There is a pack split inside the final 20 km with 70 riders in the first group. Lander, Petit and Stallaert are on the wrong side of the split. They make it back after some effort.
Langeveld attacks with 16 km to go!
The break and Langeveld are all caught with 12 km left.
Dakteris, Oram and seven others are dropped.
6 km to go and it is Wohler on the charge. He has 42" to the peloton.
The gap is down to 18" as the pack chases furiously.
3.5 km. Wohler still leads by 16". There are no sprint trains yet in the peloton. Only 38 riders remain in the front group.
Five riders get away from the peloton in pursuit of Wohler with 2.5 km left. They are Van Avermaet, Summerhill, Dzamastagic, Hansen and Stoltz.
Boev finds himself hanging between the above group and the peloton.
2 km left. Wohler is caught by four of the five chasers. Stoltz is the one dropped.
Both him and Boev are picked up by the next group of chasers, who are Degenkolb, Van Staeyen, Holloway, Swift and Bewley.
This group is 23" down. The peloton is a further 18" behind.
Groenewegen has been dropped from the peloton.
Under the kilometer banner we go. Van Avermaet trails Dzamastagic as the Evonik pair get a gap to the rest.
E2 -> Degenkolb, Holloway, Bewley, Van Staeyen, Swift, Wohler, Summerhill, Hansen
E3 -> Boev, Kristoff, Ciolek, Coquard, Vantomme, Guarnieri, Ahlstrand
600 meters. Dzamastagic still leads Van Avermaet. Degenkolb, Holloway and Bewley lead the chase.
300 meters to go. The view from Van Stayen. Dzamastagic is pulling away!
100 meters. Van Stayen is tired. Ahlstrand is also tired after having pulled back a lot of distance.
And Dzamastagic takes the win! Just ahead of Van Avermaet for a Evonik 1-2!
Degenkolb is 3rd, ahead of Holloway.
Bewley is 5th.
Guarnieri is 6th, with Van Staeyen 7th and Ahlstrand 8th.
Coquard and Kristoff complete the top 10.
A tired Swift is 11th.
Roelandts, Summerhill and Wohler cross the line next.
Ciolek, Vantomme, Grosu and Hansen are next past the line.
Feng and Mundle from the pack complete the top 20.
