Stupid Announcers

I'm watching the 7th stage of the Dauphine and the 2nd stage of the Tour de Suisse on Versus, the american tv channel that shows cycling. I used to have great respect for Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen, both former pro's who call the races. However, over the course of the two hours I have been watching, they have made numerous mistakes. Here are my three favorites.
1 - Saying that Johan Vansummeren (Silence-Lotto) is probably working for his team-mate, Stijn Devolder (Quick-Step).
2 - Continually impling for about 15 minutes that Damiano Cunego is Fabian Wegmann until finally announcing their mistake, despite - 1) Wegmann wouldn't be among the favorites on a cat.1 mountain, 2) Everything that Cunego is wearing besides the white jersey of the protour leader is pink and blue. And 3) Cunego doesn't have the German stripes.
3 - The non-stop refering to the ProTour as the World Cup
Anyone else had problems with wrong and just downright stupid announcers in any sport (besides Chris Kamara, everyone knows how idiotic he is, but just in case you don't, look here)?

A while ago but in the Pro20 world cup, there was this female comentator who was completely incompetetent She once said "He's hit the ball, that's a good thing" and also "He has hit that for 4, that gives him 4 runs" She really pissed me off

I say who cares. Everyone makes mistakes. They are probably worn out from looking through all the tapes and then talking for 2 hours straight.

the 2006 world cup, ESPN on more than one occasion tried to convince me that Keller was the best keeper in a group that had Buffon and Cech. Euro 2008 has been much, much better in that respect with Andy Gray, Derik Rae, one or two of the others who call the game.

i just loved when he said that he spoke with Paulinho in the day before and that he was on competition but was delayed because he had worked so much and Paulinho was at home injured, still he got loaded with e-mails saying that Paulinho wasn't there but he kept saying the same thing

The worst part is that when he doesn't know something, he immediately makes it up.
My 2 favorite Paulo Martins moments:
Vattenfall Cyclassics 2006
Insisting that Paulinho was no longer in the front group because he'd "worked very hard for many many kms. I saw him there, he was very brave". Paulinho wasn't racing that day.
Tour de France 2006
Insisting despite everyone telling him otherwise that Landis' advantage in TIME over his pursuers would diminish quite a lot once the pursuers started descending "because he's going downhill while they're still going uphill. the distance is longer because of that"
Honorable mentions:
- Pfannberger and Lloyd side by side in national champs gears. he immediately says "Peffaberga" (or something) "is the australian champion"
- 3 or 4 different Lotto guys keep attacking. He calls every single one of them Van Summeren, despite the fact that none of them is a 2m tall blond. Then Van Summeren attacks and he remarks how "what Van Summeren is doing is amazing. his energy never ends"
- Talking at length about "short prologues"
- "Not only is the third place at stake. the 3rd place on the podium is also up for grabs"
- both Schlecks are together. Frank keeps attacking. he keeps alternating between calling him "Andy" and "Frank"
- Always insisting he is right with a very smug and superior tone to his voice, no matter how painfully obvious it is that he is wrong
- Moorenhout wearing the dutch champion's jersey: "here comes the belgian champion"
- misspronouncing the name of every single rider's who isn't from a latin country in a way that makes you have absolutely no idea whatsoever who he's talking about

I could right an essay on David Duffield, everytime he comes on I tempted to bash my head of the glass coffee table in front. Blabers on about random things, names are extremly incorrect. He thinks he knows what riders are like and how they ride but he just doesnt. Thats about it i think, i know he is really old but you cant beat, David Harmon and Sean Kelly when they commentate B) |

Yes, Roberto Vacchi and Anders Adamsson is great commentators. They are making it really fun to watch cycling.

In Denmark we used to have Jørn Mader and Jørgen Leth who you either love or hate. They have numerous legendary comments from the Tour de France. Here are a few (my translation.):
They referred to Miguel Indurain as "The big brown muscle".
About Jan Ulrich on a TT "The powerplant form Rostock. A big massive trampling German, a torpedo shot through the air, a bomb of power, almost plows up the tarmac, the legs goes like large pistons in the German machine, a rolling Bismarckslump (some sort of candy).
Leth: "Look at the Mauris smile" Mader: "Yes that man could smile a raccoon down a tree."
About Armstrong: "Look how calm he is sitting in his saddle. Even when he is standing up."
And finally: "He treats his bike like an old bitch who deserves it."

I must say that although Mader was quite a character, I got fed up with him, all the mistakes he made and how little he knew about contemporary cycling. It almost became a ritual that if the camera cut to a rider all loaded up with bottles struggling to get back to the peloton he'd go "OMG attack!". That he also had an alcohol problem for years, helped make things slightly surreal sometimes. I never saw it myself, but in one edition of the Vuelta he was supposed to have been seriously drunk, uttering complete nonsense for hours. I always remember how he kept insisting that Garcia Acosta looked like a horse, or how he characterised Rué as "a donkey on speed". The funniest episode I remember was when he mistook the camera helicopter's down-draught for windy weather and went on about how you could see the riders struggling in the rough wind.
Our current duo, Dennis Ritter and smug Rolfie, are more, shall we say, stable. It even seems that Rolf doesn't talk about his own career all the time anymore, and he's certainly a heck of a lot more articulate than a lot of other ex pros (like Sean "yes, certainly" Kelly). I like how he's seemingly always had time to talk to every single rider in the peloton on the morning before each stage, or how he'll say that things have turned out exactly as he predicted, except that he didn't actually predict anything to begin with.
But yes, David Duffield, ugh. He's like Jørn Mader on acid. Thankfully they don't use him that much anymore.
A few more Mader&Leth goodies:

I remember on time, when Sastre attacked on a mountain, and then Mader said that he was behind until he saw the peloton coming around the corner.
And it's quiet anoing when Rolf Sörensen contantley called Boogerd Bogart, and i'm 100% shure that Rolf will talk for hours about his victory at Superbesse at the stage to Superbesse in the tour.
