Tour of Beijing stage 5

[C1] Tour of Beijing

Stage 5 Jining – Jining 146.2 km

The Final stage of Tour of Beijing 2017, is a circuit race of about 6 ½ laps in Jining, a city of about 8.000.000 people located some 600 km south of Beijing.

The Jining area is famous for being the birthplace and home of Confucius and Mencius. Two of the most important Chinese philosophers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/profiles.jpg

The stage is short and flat, with 7 short hilly climbs. The hills will make it harder for the sprinter teams to keep the breakaway under control but we must expect a mass sprint finish, which also means that even though Tomohiro Kinoshita is just 5 sec. behind Diego Ulissi in GC, they will be very hard to find today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/fav.jpg

About 3 km into the race the riders starts the first out of seven climbs, a very short hill climb, but it is not easy though slopes above 7%.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Honkisz opens the race with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Ramos Ticona, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png De Souza and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely also acceleration out of the bunch.

Further back it seems like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta may also have created a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/01.jpg

8 km raced, the first 5 riders as mentioned above join forces to form the leading group, they are at the beginning of the flat after the first climb.

42” behind them another group escaped the pack, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes, they are 45” in front of the pack.

But the fighting is not over yet, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Craven and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Hategeka keeping the pace up in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/02.jpg

19 km raced, while it looks like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang will make contact to the stage leader before the upcoming climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes haven’t been able to keep up with the high pace pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/03.jpg

27 km raced, the breakaway now 7 riders are at the top, after the second climb
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes at 56”, peloton at 3’02

The best placed rider in the breakaway is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Waeytens 31th at 16’03, he is also one og the strongest with a very good punch and quite good on the flat too.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Ramos Ticona is best placed in the KoM 4th at 18 points, he won’t win it but he needs just 5 point to move up to 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes who obviously haven’t shown great legs so far, should in theory also be well equipped for a stage like this, a fine punch combined with the fastest sprint amongst the eight riders in front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/04.jpg

The peloton has now definitely decided on ceasefire, accepting the situation.
As the pace has also gone down in the breakaway, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes came back, some 5 km before the breakaway passes the sprint.

Disappointing seen from a spectator view, there are no fight for it.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Honkisz
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png De Souza

105 km left, gap 3’59

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/05.jpg

Maybe more unusual there is no fight for the KoM either, the riders just keep the pace over the climb

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png De Souza

With this result, any doubt that Giovanni Visconti will win the KoM is gone. Provided he makes it to the finish. When the peloton passes the KoM distance has increased a lot now 4’52, 93 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/06.jpg

Most of the stage we see mainly four team working in the peloton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Generali: Molard, Martinelli
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Berg: Portela, Schachmann
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Eritel: Hategeka, Khederi, Craven, Venter
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Indosat: Russo, Khalilikhosroshani

The first harder push is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Generali cutting the distance to 3’32, 70 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/07.jpg

58 km left, the breakaway passes the sprint with the paceline intact
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Waeytens
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes

52 km left, perhaps not a direct fight for the KoM, but we get accelerations over the final KoM and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta shows signs of weakness.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Honkisz
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Waeytens

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta rejoins the breakaway swiftly, but as soon as the group hits the climb again, he starts hanging and soon he drops again.

One hill left, 30 km to the line
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta at 28”
Peloton at 1’27

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/09.jpg

This time it is not looking good for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta, 20 km to the line and he have not been able to make it back.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta at 44”
Peloton at 1’16

8.5 km left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta have been caught a few km ago.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Ramos Ticona is leading the breakaway onto the final climb. Peloton at 51”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/10.jpg

7 km to go.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely makes a hard push on the last part of the hill, splitting the group by dropping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Gonzalez Cortes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png De Souza

Up this final hill the peloton is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Teklit with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt in 3rd position.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Bauer 4th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Khalilikhosroshani 5th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/11.jpg

5.4 km left
Peloton at 52” the group in between almost caught.

From here pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden glued, starts to open a small gap, getting wider and wider.

With a forceful move pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt, coming from some positions behind the front of the peloton, accelerated and close the gap.

2.7 km to the line, the four breakaway riders still got 32” to Debesay, but what is this? It seems like the peloton have no lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/12.jpg

1.5 km to the line, and the peloton has already lost 46”, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt passes the four riders in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt opens the sprint, a bit too far out ?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt first under the red kite, now with just 800 meters to the finish line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden is not getting any closer. But we know it was an early sprint it may not be over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden never got any closer.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt have all the time he needs to raise his arms and celebrate, winning the final stage of Tour of Beijing in Jining

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden 2nd

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely 3rd as the first rider from the original breakaway, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay 4th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Honkisz 5th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Waeytens 6th, all those riders in same time as the winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Ramos Ticona hold of the peloton for 7th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel wins the bunch sprint for 8th in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Scully 9th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder 10th, the peloton lose 49”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage5/18.jpg

As expected this result does not change anything in the overall results:
GC: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi
