Tour of Beijing stage 4
Tamijo
[C1] Tour of Beijing

Stage 4 Yanqing - Mentougou Miaofeng Mountain 158.3 km

The stage starts in Yanqing, a city of about 100.000 people, located about 100 km northwest of Beijing center, in Yanqing District (Yánqìng Qū). The area contains the famous Badaling section of the Great Wall.

From Yanqing the route moves south into the hills northwest of Beijing City, finishing on Mount Miaofeng, The Mountain is famous for its many temples and shrines.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/profile.jpg

Today’s route is up and down all day, the first 120 km on relative soft waves with mild slopes, but the last 40 km a lot steeper climbs up to the finish at Mount Miaofeng

A beautiful day with a light breeze at the start line, even less wind closing in on Mount Miaofeng.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/fav.jpg

We still got a full peloton of 139 riders starting again today. KoM holder pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti opens the race after about 2 km, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato counters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/01.jpg

There is relative limited fighting for the breakaway today, only one short lived attempt before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta get away alone and joins the first group. They got 2’10 over the top of the early uncategorized climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/02.jpg

There is 6 KoM points on the top of the only categorized climb today, additional 6 points at the finish. If pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti can collect the first 6 points his overall KoM win should be safe, as KoM 2nd pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Le Gac is not likely to get anything today, and the last stage has just two cat. 4.

None of these riders is a threat to the GC, all more than 20 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/03.jpg

On the climb up to the intermediate sprint, a short downhill section and we get the first crash today. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Ortega, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Biermans, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Santoro and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png De Plus

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Ortega very serious, he won’t be able to continue.

The breakaway passes the intermediate sprint with 1’56
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Meiji - JR East, have been leading the peloton most of the time, holding the distance just under 3 minutes, but with 40 km left some of the other teams decide that it is time to reduce that gap, we now see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Ji, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Bauer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Moser, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Baska taking the front and upping the pace a lot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/05.jpg

We are at the short but hard hill, just before the KoM climb, in the breakaway pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta can’t keep up with the harder pace now set by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato

In the peloton most of the top riders have moved closer to the front, but we see GC 16th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Cyrile Thièry struggling very far back sitting protected by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Molard

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Thièry has done very well to sit at 16th in GC, not a huge surprise if he can’t keep that up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/06.jpg

We start the very hard categorized climb, 8.6 km at 7%. The breakaway has exactly 2 minutes

The situation of GC top 20 is approximately this:
GC20 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely sitting in 3rd position, looks like he will be working as domestic for Di Maggio

In a group right behind the front we have GC1 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita, GC2 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi, GC3 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome, GC4 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz, GC6 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel, GC7 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio, GC9 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reichenbach, all with domestic and all inside the first 22 riders.

In this group also GC15 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt unprotected

About 25 position GC8 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski with GC5th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt at wheel, neither of them with domestic at this point. Same goes for GC 18 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Schachmann at Kwiatkowski left side.

About 30 position GC10 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily at the wheel of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Lay

About 60 position GC11 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Lavery without help.

GC12 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Caruso in 27 position close to Betancourt, protected by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Terpstra

GC13 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Levarlet in about 40 position unprotected. GC14 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mehr-Wenige side by side with Levarlet, GC17 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Khalilikhosroshani close to these riders, also GC 19 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Fumeaux close behind those riders.

GC16 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Thièry, still very low at least 100 riders in front of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/07.jpg

The pace in the pack takes its told between the less skilled climbers, most of the sprinters lost contact. Pack reduced to 94 riders.

Somewhat surprising it is now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Berg Cycles leading the pack, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Bauer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Portela and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Schachmann at front.

5 km to the top, 25.7 to the finish line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Thaouta has been caught, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato at 53”

Right behind the domestic lead, we got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita 4th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome 5th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi 6th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Gerdemann 7th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel 8th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz 9th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio 10th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt 11th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola 12th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reichenbach 13th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt 14th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Shirota 15th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt 16th position.

Further back we can spot pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Thièry having improved a lot, now in about 50th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/08.jpg

2 km to the top, breakaway at 51”

We have started to see stronger riders no longer able to hold on to the front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Grmay, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hatsuyama, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Mollema, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Belmokhtar, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Feillu have all dropped, now sitting in a group 1’32 behind the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti attacks the KoM from 1.5 km, opening an 11” gap.

From the pack pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry and a bit later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle attack.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti has used too much too early, getting passed first by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato and later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry before the KoM. The fact that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti gets only 2 points at the climb, opens the possibility that he could lose the KoM, to Olivier Le Gac (theoretically also Tomohiro Kinoshita)

KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti

Distance over the top 1’11 from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato to the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/10.jpg

Over the top GC 18th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Schachmann and GC 20th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely drop out of the peloton, paying the price for having worked for their team leaders earlier at the stage.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti have used all he had, he is not able to join pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle has accelerated and joins the stage lead.

19 km to the line pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Visconti at 20” peloton at 1’15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/11.jpg

We hit the final climb 9 km left, distance 41” that should be far from enough.
Peloton 51 riders now, further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Schachmann at 1’35, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Michely at 2’27.

Position in front of the pack is, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Khalilikhosroshani, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Shirota, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Zielinski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Portela, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz

Side by side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio

Behind them also side by side, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Gerdemann, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png McEvoy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Fumeaux and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Kung

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Caruso placed between the first 25-30 riders.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Levarlet, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Lavery and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Thièry sitting between 35 and 40th, but worst of all GC riders now GC 14th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mehr-Wenige hanging as one of the last in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/12.jpg

8 km to the top distance from leaders to the pack, 56”

First attack on the GC, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel accelerating, quick to take his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz accelerated from the favorite group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/13.jpg

7.5 km to the top

The accelerations initiated by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel have fragmented the favorites onto smaller groups.

At front still pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle

At 12” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio

At 23” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi

At 39” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita

At 59” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily

At 1’17 peloton 54 riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/14.jpg

7 km to the top

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio have caught and now overtake the breakaway.

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi is just about to reach pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita is slowly closing in 21” behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/15.jpg

6.5 km to the top
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio dosent rest, as soon as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita makes contact to the group he attack again. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel counter attack both opening gaps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/16.jpg

The favorite group that was created just 600-700 meters back, is now disintegrated again. While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio seems to have the best legs so far, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita still in the group of breakaway riders moving slow enough for also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt to join from behind.

This is an overview of the situation.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio in front he got 6km to the top

At 8” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel

At 17” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz at wheel has also attacked

At 30” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome now also starting to lay distance to the race leader

At 37” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita leading the group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt

At 51” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily

At 56” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt

At 1’17 a large peloton of 53 riders, we can spot pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reichenbach, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Caruso, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Levarlet, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mehr-Wenige in this group.

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi losing a little extra time to the stage leader now 19”

First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz have been caught from behind by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt and very impressive pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle able to hang in here. They are all at 34”

At 1’08 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry

At 1’39 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reichenbach, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mehr-Wenige and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Rovny

At 1’49 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Tanovitchii

At 1’55 Peloton 44 riders, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Caruso, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Barrio pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Teklit and many others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/18.jpg

4 km to the top

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio holds the distance to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel at 12”, but now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi has made contact to Flügel’s rear wheel.

Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita is at 47”, which means that the virtual race leader is now Ulissi even if we do not count eventual bonus seconds, the distance after yesterday’s stage was 31”.

Behind this group 8 riders have now joined forces at 1’29 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Serry, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sanchez Gil, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png McEvoy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Levarlet

2.5 km to the top for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Di Maggio

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi have lost additional time, now 19”

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Anuar Aziz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Vogt at 51”

The pace set by Froome was finaly too much for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle now at 1’09

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski as attacked from a larger group, now at 1’23

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reichenbach, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mehr-Wenige have caught group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt, 10 riders at 1’48

Further increasing his lead now 23” in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ulissi

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Froome and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Kinoshita another 32” further back, the GC lead is still wide open.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kwiatkowski 8th at 1’43

A very tired pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zingle just hold 9th in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Betancourt winning the sprint for 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Beijing/Stage4/25.jpg

In GC Diego Ulissi takes the lead pushing Tomohiro Kinoshita down to 2nd.
Cesare Di Maggio not only wins the stage but also moves from 7th to 4th.
Mario Vogt not only hold the youth but also moves of from 15th to 10th.
After looking bad early at the stage Cyrile Thiery came back and moved up from 16th to 15th also Jonathan Fumeaux and Jonathan McEvoy improved the GC today

Losing positions in GC today besides Kinoshita: Mohamed Shawal Anuar Aziz, Carlos Betancourt, David Boily, Philip Lavery, Damiano Caruso, Maximillian Schachmann, Behnam Khalilikhosroshani and Kim Michely

In the points Tomohiro Kinoshita still leading and not likely to lose it.

Giovanni Visconti leads the KoM but Olivier Le Gac will be able to take it tomorrow if he takes most of the points.

Generali – EDF leads the teams classification and Mario Vogt the youth, that will probably not change.
