Tour de San Luis - Stage 8
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_000.png

The eight days in San Luis are almost over: the race concludes with a flat stage, that is short without any real difficulties. That said, it does feature a finishing circuit, that comes with a nasty downhill sector close to the finish.

Will the sprinters battle for line honours or will the ever dangerous "final stage" breakaway do the trick?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_001.jpg

10 riders would at least try to make that happen and they establish a three minutes gap with about 68km to go. Surprisingly, no Costa in the group today:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Wyss (GC's 11th) with a moment of shock earlier into the race. He hits the turf, but his team brings all the support to bring him back into the peloton immediately.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_003.jpg

Tough luck for a sprinter then: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Haller punctures with 37km to go. He's getting all the support from his team (Mestre, Sankwathi, Le Bon, Hardy, Kruopis, Aulas), as Haller has to be considered a favorite for a possible bunch sprint.

Unfortunatelly for him and his team, the peloton is currently chasing the breakaway and so, they struggle to make it back to the pack! 2'25" of disadvantage already. This ain't looking good at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_004.jpg

The same goes for a few more crash victims, who won't make it back to the peloton right in time:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire (GC's 21st)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Anderson
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Ford with a crash 20km before finish!

A few more riders got dropped now, mostly crash victims from previous days:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Khripta
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Juarez
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Cuming

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_005.jpg

Those riders, as well as the In-n-Out group, merge to a 23-riders-group, that is now 3'38" behind the peloton with only 11km to go:

WCC and Sauber try to keep the pace up and the early breakaway is a minute ahead.. this may be a close one eventually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_006.jpg

With now 4.2km to go though, the gap still remains the same! This is looking promising for the breakaway now with the sprinter teams struggling to finally close the gap:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cruz tries to solo away from his breakaway companions!

De Vocht and Appleby have been dropped in the meantime, 7 riders remain in contention with Cruz now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Gradek as the first one trying to jump behind Cruz, who's 16" ahead with 1.5km to go!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Kaislavuo jumping behind as well, with Semple, Passalacqua and also Rodriguez and Lejman not far behind..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_008.jpg

They are too late though, just like the peloton:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Cruz takes the final stage here in San Luis! It's his second stage-win at the Tour de San Luis after winning the ITT (stage four) back in 2014.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_009.jpg

33 seconds later, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Gradek comes in as 2nd. He couldn't follow Cruz, but at least he held off the others.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Lejman outsprinting pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Kaislavuo for a podium result. The puncheur couldn't compete with the best here and so he will at least be satisfied to get a minor stage result on this final day.

Sempe 5th ahead of Passalacqua, Handley and Rodríguez. The peloton still a minute in arrears..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_010.jpg

And here it comes down the tricky descent into the final kilometre. Yet only fighting for the 9th place on the stage:

Lay/Castaneda and Salleh with a small gap on Nizzolo, Clarke and Corti..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_011.jpg

Castaneda takes 9th ahead of Salleh! Not really worth a mention, but it has to be done. Corti beating Nizzolo for 11th. An unlucky Simon Clarke crashed on the final metres, coming out of the last corner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_012.jpg

Group Squire/Haller eventually loses about 5 minutes on the peloton! They fought hard, but the pace was too high to stand a chance. A few more riders suffered from those efforts and minor crashes and so we got four DNFs today: Corwin, Jiriakov, Kalaba, Angarita.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Roux is the winner of the Tour de San Luis 2017! Two stage-wins in the last two days: he definitely found the perfect way to bounce back from a low GC position after a tough timetrial. Given his performances after struggling so hard against the clock, it's certainly a well deserved victory.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily a still strong 2nd then. This eight days had everything for him: a huge solo-win for the GC lead on the fourth day was followed by a disastrous outing in the timetrial. He fought back on the queen stage, finishing 2nd behind Roux but moving up to 1st in the GC again. We know Roux's story then, but Boily at least managed to score some valuable points here as well.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Chaves completing the podium ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Monfort then. Chaves as the only one of those four riders to not get a stage-win, but he's been consistent and should be happy with a podium. A bit unlucky for Monfort, but with stage-win on third day bagged, it's been surely a nice race for him, too.

The same goes for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Hollenstein as 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Gaimon. They all will be happy with the results and WCC will love to get a 6th place in addition to Boily's 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Wallays, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Uwizeyimana and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Tvetcov complete the Top-10 ahead of Wyss, Zoidl, Taborre, Pellaud and Gilbert. We had some unlucky crash victims as well, so we don't know what someone like Durasek (32nd) would have been capable to do without being involved in at least one crash earlier on. Squire dropping down the GC today, as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_014.jpg

He lost the GC-lead yesterday, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Boily looks happy enough to get the points competition here. His 69pts prove his consistency, with Roux (56pts) and Monfort (53pts) on the further positions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_015.jpg

He's been quiet today, but it's been the whole opposite for the week before: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Costa as one of the most aggressive riders here in the eight days in Argentinia. He took the KoM-lead on the second day (first road stage) and never gave it away. Some nice points for Philips, that also had a stage-win for Per (plus a day in the GC lead) and a solid GC result for Wyss.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_8_016.jpg

Former GC-leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Uwizeyimana secured himself the U25 competition. Pellaud as his biggest competitor, but he never really got to shine in this race, finishing 51secs off Uwizeyimana. A great jersey for him, even though he heavily struggled in the last couple of days here. Still a Top-10 in the GC, which must be considered a great result, when looking at his skillset.

So that's it from the Tour de San Luis 2017. Another eventful edition with the top favorites delivering stage-wins and the top spots in the GC as well. Surely a few surprises, too, but that's racing. The locals may be a bit disappointed with SanCor's results eventually, but they've been heavily cheering for their favorite team anyway. Better luck next time.
