The 20km ITT around Villa Mercedes is surely another key stage for the GC battle. The most promising contenders for the stage-win won't be a factor for the GC though: Hofer, Mullen, Grabovski, Ma, Hacecký.
Zoidl as an exception, who definitely wants to prove his TT skills today. Also Boily should be able to benefit from his superior timetrial abilities against Roux and Chaves, even though he ain't that much stronger afterall. Maybe Tvetcov and crash victim Durasek as minor threats?
Reijnen with a rather early start and he's setting a first notable best time:
26'47" as the first indicator of what times to beat today
Vandewalle performs even better though:
26'34" to beat his teammate by 13 seconds at the finish!
Hacecký + 28" to disappoint
Grabovski + 27" - surely the same
Ma rode a good prologue and he's similar strong today: just 5" off at the split, he's going for a strong time at the finish as well:
+ 8" as provisional 2nd at the finish
Hofer as one of the top favorites for the stage. He's just 2" off Vandewalle's time at the first split, but can't improve until the finish:
+ 5" as new provisional 2nd at the finish
Ugrinic + 5" as a surprising 3rd so far!
Mullen + 20" as 10th, a rather disappointing result
Van Zandbeek looking better, even though he's also slower than Vandewalle eventually:
+ 10" to finish 2 seconds behind Ma
Vandewalle ahead of Hofer (a mistake here) and Ugrinic. Ma, Van Zandebeek, Reijnen ahead of Rosas and Sepulveda. No GC threats so far, but those riders should be the ones to beat here. Not too many similar strong rated TT guys to follow though.
Gradek (36th in the GC) surprises many, as he sets a new best time at the first split - equalizing the time of Vandewalle! Will he hold on until the end?
No! He loses a few seconds on the second half of the parcours:
+ 4" as new 2nd at the finish! An impressive performance nevertheless.
Diggle + 1'03" - definitely a horrible performance
Kneisky (24th in the GC) next. He's been strong so far in the race and he's looking good at the split - just 3" off Gradek's best time.
Just like Gradek, he suffers a bit in the final sector though. Losing even more time than Gradek:
+ 11" to finish in between Van Zandbeek and Reijnen as provisional 7th at the finish
Thill + 33" and with a chance to move up in the GC!
Tvetcov will probably hope for an improvement as well. He's not special, but fine at the first split - 13" behind the best time.
But he's significally slower on the second part:
+ 31" at the finish, still a bit faster than Thill eventually
Roux (GC's 19th, + 0.52) as the first premium puncheur with big ambitiouns for the GC. It's a tough day for him, as he simply needs to limit the losses in order to stay in touch with the Top-10. He did not exactly shine so far, so he will hope that his best days are yet to come: 1'08" behind at the first split as 131st. As said: it will be tough.
And he's losing another minute on the second part:
+ 2'11" at the finish, which will be just enough to finish 157th on the stage!
Hollenstein + 51" and not exactly taking advantage from his solid TT skills
Wallays (GC's 10th, + 0.38) as the first Top-10 rider and he's better than Hollenstein - just 11" behind Gradek/Vandewalle at the split!
He loses some further seconds, but does quite well overall:
+ 28" 16th at the finish!
Smukulis comes with decent TT skills as well, but he's already 28" behind at the split. Surely better than someone like Roux though:
+ 59" at the finish. Still not the result, that he might have hoped for..
Gaimon + 43" and doing better than his teammate
Zoidl (GC's 7th, + 0.34) must be considered a dark horse for the stage. He's been strong so far and should fancy his chances today. His split time ain't special though, as he's 13" off the best time as 17th:
+ 31" at the finish as 20th.. not bad, not good neither. He will improve in the GC nevertheless.
Gilbert (GC's 6th) + 1'28" as 91st - surely not at his best today
Cuming (GC's 5th) as another decent timetrial rider, who will fancy his chances for a strong result and improvement in the GC. He's 20" off at the split as a rather underwhelming 30th:
+ 43" at the finish as 31st.. same as for Smukulis: no disaster, but a better result could have been possible..
Chaves (GC's 4th, + 0.29) not exactly too shabby against the clock and with the recent performances, he might actually limit the damage today. He's just 28" slower than Gradek/Vandewalle at the split, as 45th placed rider.
+ 57" at the finish to gain more than a minute on Roux
Uwizeyimana (GC's 3rd, + 0.24) as one of the biggest surprises in the GC so far. A strong prologue and no further losses in the hilly stages. Another rider, who should like his chances to do something special today: he's 20th at the split with 15" lost on the best.
This could be a promising time afterall..
Monfort (GC's 2nd, + 0.16) definitely with some pressure: he's 32" behind at the split and therefore already losing 17 seconds on Uwizeyimana!
Boily (GC leader) as one of the better rated TT riders amongst the Top-10 riders and while he may expect to lose some time on Uwizeyimana, he shouldn't do too bad against many other puncheurs. Unfortunatelly for him, he's looking rather tired after yesterday's big solo ride: 52" behind at the split, as 108th!
This is surely a bummer, as he's not much better than Roux at this point! A big loss today?
Uwizeyimana definitely put some pressure on both Monfort and a struggling Boily:
+ 31" at the finish, 21st on the stage. In the same times as Tvetcov and Zoidl!
Monfort + 1'00" as 52nd then! Losing half a minute on the African and also a few seconds on Chaves..
Boily though with the bigger loss, as he finishes in the same range like Bennett (103rd on the stage):
+ 1'35" as 102nd! This is not what he could have expected for the timetrial. The GC-lead is definitely gone for today!
Vandewalle celebrates his stage-win first. A strong Gradek 2nd ahead of Hofer and Ugrinic. Ma completing the Top-5. A disappointing 13th place for Mullen, Grabovski only 15th. Also Zoidl might have hoped for a better result than his 20th place today.
What happened in the GC?
Uwizeyimana took over the race-lead from Boily, who's dropping to 9th today (0.40 behind the new leader now)! Zoidl moves up to 2nd with + 0.10. The feeling remains, that it should have been possible to claim the race-lead here.
Wallays a strong 3rd with + 0.11. Cuming up to 4th ahead of Monfort (0.21), who did quite well to limit the damage. Gaimon 6th ahead of Chaves (0.31) and Smukulis.. Monfort, Chaves and Boily stay in the Top-10 at least and the gaps ain't too big as well.
Kneisky moving up to 13th ahead of Vichot and Tvetcov. Not a good day (maybe as to expected) for Roux, who's now 27th in the GC with + 2.08 on the GC leader. He's more than a minute behind his biggest opponents. Also Cunego (2.25), Bennett (2.39) or Grippo (3.28) will need to gain back minutes from now on.
Hofer takes over the points-lead (42pts) from Boily (41).
