Fourth day in Argentinia, second hilly stage: we're starting in El Porero de los Funes and go to La Punta. A signfically easier profile than yesterday, but the 'El Mirador del Potero' climb (4.3km, 5% slopes) could do some damage so close to the finish (12km from the hilltop to the finish in La Punta).
Monfort leading the race after yesterday's stage-win. Also Chaves and Boily looked strong, even though they couldn't create gaps on the less strong puncheurs.
A first attempt from 7 riders to break clear has been shut down quickly: Costa, Semple, A Van Niekerk, Hofer, Jérôme, Partridge, Maesen
The ever aggressive KoM-leader went again though:
Costa takes the first Cat3 mountain sprint
Partridge comes 2nd
Hofer 3rd
Van Niekerk tries to follow as well
Costa got dropped from the group soon after the sprint, but he's re-joining the group as soon as he realizes, that they will build the break of the day. Partridge as his biggest competitor for the KoM classification so far:
Costa
Partridge
Hofer
Van Niekerk
Jérôme
form the break of the day, leading by 2'32" with now 77km to go and the mountain sprint ahead:
Costa would miss out on points this time, as Jérôme took the primes ahead of Partridge and Van Niekerk. Still, KoM-lead defended so far:
Provisional KoM: Costa 34, Partridge 18, Jérôme 14
No one cared for the intermediate sprints and so it's the usual peloton-vs-breakaway game: 26km to go now and the gap is down to 1'18" with today's most crucial climb soon to come.
Davison leading the chase in the pack, where Xero, Azeteca and Reddit are the most active teams so far.
The breakaway is on the most difficult sector (7.6%) and goes into pieces with now just 13km to go:
Partridge dropes Jérôme and Costa, Hofer and Van Niekerk couldn't follow a few moments before!
The peloton is about a minute behind Partridge and we have yet to wait for a big attack..
..Partridge would take the Cat2 sprint ahead of Jérôme and Costa:
Provisional KoM: Costa 40, Partridge 28, Jérôme 22
And just at the hilltop, we see the first big moves of the day: 10.5km remaining, a downhill sector ahead!
Boily (GC's 12th, + 0.24) goes as first!
Chaves (3rd, + 0.13) tries to follow, just like
Roux (19th, + 0.36)
Monfort (GC leader)
Zoidl (6th, + 0.18)
The attack came late into the climb and so it's surely a tricky challenge to hold off the pack on the downhill:
Boily though managed to open up a gap! He's riding solo and no one else could follow his move. The Canadian went past Costa and he's about 30 seconds ahead of the peloton (176 riders) with now 5.5km remaining!
Partridge still leading solo with 50 seconds on Boily, Jérôme is in between, just a few seconds ahead of Boily and soon to be caught!
Schoonbroodt is taking care of the chase now: he's pulling the strings hard, just like Nzeke for Xero and Vichot for Kulczyk. Boily definitely a threat for Monfort with the latest gaps, but it's all flat from now on.
Just 1.5km to go now and Boily reaches Partridge! Jérôme and Costa have been swallowed by the chasing peloton, that is now 37" behind Monfort.
This will be a tight decision eventually, even though Boily looks really promising for the stage-win at least..
And here comes a stretched pack with still Schoonbroodt at the very front..
And while Boily seems to get away from Partridge, the pack has reached the flamme rouge:
Schoonbroodt
Grippo
Taborre
Anderson
Pirazzi
Clarke
in the leading positions there. No real sprint yet, but of course they keep the pace up in order to close the gap to the two leaders!
Boily drops Partridge with another acceleration! Just a few hundred metres to go and right now, his gap on the peloton is at 33 seconds!
His problem though is Partridge, who's just 10" behind him and 23" ahead of the pack. Will he destroy the possible gap for Boily?
For now, it doesn't really matter, as Boily celebrates his stage-win! What a ride on this final 11km of the day. Attacking late into the climb and getting away with a solo ride. Going past three early escapees and sprinting to an impressive victory. Crucial bonifications, but of course he will wait for the jury decision as well:
at this point, he's 12" ahead of Partridge, who's 18" ahead of the pack.. this might be too less for gaps being rewarded in such a flat finish!
Partridge tumbles across the line and he definitely had a great stage as 2nd on the day from the early break! What a huge fight, but Boily was simply too strong.
The pack is coming closer, but how much did Partridge lose on Boily?
17.. 18... 19...... 20 seconds! Just enough to get a gap rewarded!
+ 20" for Partridge on Boily, who will love those additional seconds gained on the other GC contenders.
Schoonbroodt still at the front of the bunch! Grippo close behind, Anderson is there, Taborre is there. Pirazzi tries to be there.
Clarke fades away and there's Vichot and Nzeke coming from behind. Too late for bonifications of course.
Schoonbroodt takes 3rd and he finishes with the same time as Partridge! A strong effort from him, as he pulled the peloton for the final few kilometres. A bit unlucky for himself, that Boily got that gap, but it's a fully deserved gap nevertheless.
Anderson a strong 4th ahead of Grippo and Taborre. Chaves (19th), Monfort (23rd) and all other GC contenders finish safely inside the big group. Only a few minor riders got dropped today.
A big day for Boily: moving up to the race-lead and points-lead as well! He's leading the GC by 16sec on Monfort and 24sec on Uwizeyimana. With tomorrow's ITT as the next key stage, that was certainly a crucial win for Boily, who may fancy to defend the race-lead on the 20km timetrial parcours.
No more bigger changes in the GC, obviously. Schoonbroodt moves up to 28th thanks to the bonifications. Costa remains the KoM-leader, as already said.
