Tour de San Luis - Stage 2
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_000.png

The tour continues with a flat stage around Villa Mercedes: 180km in total, it does feature a first mountain sprint (Cat3), but a rather easy profile after that. Crosswinds up to 45kmh could make for a tough day though.

Chavanne leading the GC, but a few sprinters could be of danger today: Kip, Vingerling as yesterday's best sprinters in the prologue. But also Haller, Castaneda and Salleh are in striking distance and should be amongst today's top favorites. Just like Nizzolo, Havik or Clarke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_001.jpg

The first attacks from Jérôme, Kaislavuo, Vermeulen and Losch are shut down by the pack quickly.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Costa would then take the mountain sprint with his attempt to break clear!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/esc.png Partridge went 2nd
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Jérôme 3rd
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Trakhov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Vila
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Jung

build another group, that tries to get away with still 166km to go. Just like the first attempt, also this group is reeled in by the peloton quickly though! Costa will be first mountain leader anyway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_002.jpg

The attacking goes on: Hacecký, Vila, Eg, Per and Vermeulen went for another empty-handed attempt to break clear..

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Losch would initiate the next, taking the first intermediate sprint
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Kaislavuo
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png De Vocht
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Trakhov

followed him and finally, we've found the break of the day! 5 riders and they establish a 4-minutes-gap quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_003.jpg

Per (20secs) and Losch (27secs) as the best placed in the GC and so it's no surprise, that they also fight for the second intermediate sprint:

Losch takes it ahead of Per! The peloton is down by 5 minutes with now 92km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_004.jpg

We're jumping straight into the crucial final quarter of the stage: 22km to go and the peloton has cut down the gap to 1'24", which is looking fine at this point.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Hofer is leading the chase with some support from In-n-Out and WCC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_005.jpg

But with now just 6km to go for the leading group, the gap is still around a minute! This could become much closer than the sprinters would have preferred.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per senses the weakness back in the pack and he's also the strongest in the breakaway group, as he's getting away from his former breakaway companions! He's opening up a 22" gap quickly and this solo attempt is surely going to make things even harder for the chasing peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_006.jpg

Yap. It looks good for Per. Still 2.5km to go for pack and the solo-leader is now 1'07" ahead! His former breakaway companions are all caught by the sprint trains now - a rather messy picture though:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_007.jpg

Per though is still too far ahead and he's approaching the finish with almost the same gap. That's not only looking promising for the stage-win, but also for the GC-lead, if he's rewarded a gap on the pack eventually!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_008.jpg

Kip, Vingerling and Clarke had the best "train" and they got a notable gap on the other sprinters - they are reaching the final km now.

Salleh, Gatto and Castaneda already quite far behind, Corti is trying to stay in the mix..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per celebrates his stage-win and the gap on the sprinters looks good! This should be a gap, but of course there's still some waiting for the race jury to make a decision.

A huge day for Philips anyway: a stage-win and Costa already secured himself the KoM-lead. Will it also be the GC-lead for Per?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_010.jpg

Kip is cracking and the 2nd place will go to either Vingerling or Clarke!

Castaneda trying to go past Kip: there's also Salleh, Haller, Lay and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Chavanne in the mix now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Vingerling sprints to a 2nd place ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Clarke!

And the gap?

25 seconds! Per gained 25 seconds plus the bonifications. The GC-lead is him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castañeda sprints for 4th ahead of a strong finishing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Lay!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Salleh comes 6th ahead of Kip, Haller, Chavanne and Kruopis. Quite a good result for Chavanne, who may at least defend his points-lead that way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_013.jpg

The crosswinds only made for some minor splits, with 16 riders being dropped from the peloton eventually:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Godoy as maybe the most notable name losing 5 minutes and all GC hopes today. The same goes for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Salinas, who punctured in the wrong moment to lose more than 6 minutes eventually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_2_014.jpg

What a day for Philips: Per takes the stage and claims the GC lead (and U25 lead) for at least one day! He's 28 seconds ahead of Vingerling and 29 ahead of 3rd Chavanne. The former race leader at least sprinted to 7pts and defends the points lead (32) by a small margin on Per (29).

Costa adding further points for the team, as he leads the KoM ranking ahead of Partridge and Jérôme. And Philips also leads the team's classification by 3 seconds on Sauber.

Tomorrow's first hilly stage should mix things up again though, as we do have the first hilltop finish and definitely a challenging route in general.
