Tour de San Luis - Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_000.png

The first of eight days in and around San Luis, Argentinia. Surely a special race for SanCor, but the overwhelming favorite rides for Sauber: Chavanne has a prologue to lose here. Will anyone be able to beat him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Mullen as another favorite with an early start. He's setting the first best time on the 4.3km parcours through Villa Mercedes:

5'30" to beat some less promising contenders

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Trillini + 1"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Vandewalle + 1"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Zakarin + 5"

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Vandousselaere though is significally stronger, which ain't good news for Mullen:

5'26" to finish the course 4 seconds faster than Mullen!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Sepulveda on the road and the spectators are cheering hard for one of the local favorites:

5'24" to set a new best time, 2 seconds ahead of Vandousselaere! Strong effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Rosas for SanCor now and another Argentinian delivers:

+ 2" to finish narrowly behind Vandousselaere as provisional 3rd!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Thill + 2" and ranked right ahead of Rosas
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Reijnen + 2" but behind Rosas
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Flens + 6" to finish closely behind Mullen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Kasa as another one, who's finishing in the same time as Rosas:

+ 2" on the still leading Sepulveda!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Kruopis + 5"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Hacecký + 8"

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Ma finishing his day with a strong time and being one of the favorites, he will be happy to set a new best time:

5'23" to finish one second better than Sepulveda!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Hofer as Sauber's second contender for the victory and he's as strong as Ma:

5'22" to finish a second faster than Ma for the new provisional lead!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Uwizeyimana + 5"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Van Zandbeek + 5"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Tvetcov + 10"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Durasek + 11"

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Chavanne has his turn and the big favorite definitely does not want to give this stage to his teammate. The prologue specialist is looking good on this slick roads and he delivers:

5'16" and six seconds faster than Hofer! This should be hard to beat, actually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Grabovski as maybe one of the last real threats. He's doing fine, but can't challenge Chavanne:

+ 9" as 5th behind Sepulveda, Ma and Hofer!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Kneisky with his attempt. A solid effort for sure, but it's just enough for a Top-10 maybe:

+ 10" as provisional 10th at the finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Kip as one of the sprinters with a good prologue skill. He's the best of all sprinters today, but narrowly misses out on a Top-10 result:

+ 10" to finish 11th eventually

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Vingerling + 11"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Salleh + 12"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Kruopis + 13"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Castañeda + 17"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Giacoppo + 17"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Andriato + 18"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Haller + 20"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Lay + 20"

So definitely a few sprinters in striking distance for tomorrow's flat stage. Given that we will see a bunch sprint decision then, Chavanne's GC-lead may last for only one day. But of course there's still some work to be done for those sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/sanluis/MG17_sanluis_1_014.jpg

"Veni. Vidi. Vici."

Enough said for Chavanne. He did well to stand the pressure as the overwhelming favorite for the prologue and his team will be delighted with the double victory as a special bonus.

As for the GC-riders, Tvetcov probably as the "winner" (16 seconds behind Chavanne as 24th). Durasek (17secs), Gilbert (20), Diggle (20), Zoidl (21), Monfort (23) and Wyss (25) as the next best promising GC contenders.

Boily (35), Roux (39) and Chaves (28) as the three best puncheurs. Roux losing more than ten seconds on Chaves. No big damage, but obviously, it's a first disadvantage nevertheless.
