Tour d'Andorra - Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_000.png

The ITT on the menu today: not too long to make it a day, where you can win or lose the race, but of course any seconds will count eventually. A long climb is followed by a long downhill to the finish. It's less about timetrial skills, really.

Valls and Penasa dominating the GC so far, but also Cataldo got a stage-win yesterday - with Bennett one of the strongest of the day as well. Anacona a strong 3rd in the GC, but today's timetrial probably won't allow anyone to gain those three minutes, that he's behind Penasa in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Squire (GC's 29th) one of the best climbers outside the Top-20 so far and he easily beats a long lasting best time from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Poorseyedi by 22 seconds eventually. A first real indicator, of which time has to be beaten today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Koshevoy (GC's 23rd) with an impressive ride as well, though he's five seconds off Squire's second split time..

new best time for Koshevoy at the finish though! Beating Squire by one second! He rode a strong downhill sector.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Vuillermoz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Destribois finishing 14 and 15 seconds off Koshevoy then, going past Poorseyedi, who yet rounds up the Top-5 of the stage with just 17 riders to come.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Eastman (GC's 17th) next and the premium climber has anything but a good race so far. A disappointing opening stage was followed by an early crash in the second stage. Two heavy losses then and he's almost 10 minutes behind Valls in the GC.

He's not too impressive today, unfortunatelly: 34" off at the second split..

+ 39" as provisional 17th at the finish.. still suffering from his crash, it seems..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Manfredi (GC's 16th) and his narrow lead over Eastman in the U25 classification are in serious danger anyway. The Italian comes up with a truly disappointing first two sectors and he already lost 1'33" on Koshevoy on the climb:

+ 1'34" at the finish, almost a minute lost on Eastman. The U25 lead will be gone today..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png De Marchi (GC's 13th) doing much better, as he crossed the second split as provisional 7th with 9 seconds off the best time:

+ 19" at the finish though, provisional 6th

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Rujano + 30"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Krasnoperov + 51"
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Briceno + 58"

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Pozzovivo (GC's 11th) looked good yesterday and the veteran is one of the strongest inside the GC's Top-20 so far: just 13" off the best time at the second split..

+ 13" as provisional 3rd at the finish. Looking at the previous times from Rujano, Krasnoperov or Briceno, this has certainly been a good ride. But Koshevoy and Squire definitely delivered big time, it seems!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Campero (GC's 10th) + 1'06" for a rather disappointing time

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Panayotov (GC's 9th) next and the Bulgarian is the first big GC contender to finally come close to Koshevoy/Squire at the top of the climb:

he's just 3 seconds off the best time and the best time at the finish may still be in reach! Let's wait, what he delivers on the downhill sector now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Bennett (GC's 8th) not much slower and the Kiwi, who finished a strong 2nd in yesterday's summit finish, may fancy his chances for some further improvement in the GC that way:

he's 6 seconds off Koshevoy at the second split (mountaintop), but a couple of seconds since the first split.. let's await his downhill performance as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Cataldo is definitely far off what Bennett/Panayotov did on the climb and he should see them going past him in the GC today: already 54 seconds slower than Squire at the split..

+ 58" at the finish, to finish in the same time as Briceno somewhere inside the Top-35 today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Karnulin (GC's 5th) next and opposing to Cataldo, he's doing pretty well on the climb. More than that, he appears to be one of strongest so far:

2 seconds faster than Squire at the mountaintop with just the downhill sector ahead! We remember Koshevoy gaining a few seconds back on Squire there. Will Karnulin do better? We will wait for him to cross the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_012.jpg

Just a quick look at the current split times at the mountaintop: Karnulin, Panayotov and Bennett still on the downhill sector and those three are the strongest of the serious GC-contenders so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Bardet (GC's 5th) as another Top-10 rider in danger to drop some places today: he's already 1'36" off Karnulin's second split time!

+ 1'39" on Koshevoy at the finish then.. he will finish 75th on the stage..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Solis (GC's 4th) even worse than Bardet then: 1'55" behind Karnulin at the mountaintop! That's quite a huge loss in a rather short time..

+ 1'56" at the finish! Still Koshevoy's time as the indicator here. That's worse than an injured Tvetcov (1.49) and Solis will finish 107th on the stage. A disastrous performance for him, who looked so solid so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Anacona (GC's 3rd) next and he won't be a threat for Koshevoy neither: 47 seconds behind Karnulin at the split..

+ 50" behind Koshevoy at the finish.. it will be just enough for a Top-30 result today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_016.jpg

No real pressure put on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Penasa that way, but the Italian struggles as well! There's no significally changing weather conditions, who could explain it, but quite some GC contenders really struggle today:

+ 1'21" for Penasa at the finish, he will miss the Top-50 on the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_017.jpg

Fortunatelly for Penasa, the GC leader ain't much better today: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Valls is already a minute behind Karnulin at the split:

+ 1'00" on Koshevoy at the finish! That's enough to finish 38th on the stage and still twenty seconds faster than Penasa, who had a terrible day after being so strong in the first three days here..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_018.jpg

But now for the stage-win.. let's remember, that Karnulin, Panayotov and Bennett remained the only threats for Koshevoy:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png Panayotov crossed the finish line first:

+ 3" off Koshevoy as provisional 3rd behind Squire!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Bennett next - not exactly known for his skills on the downhill..

+ 9" at the finish.. and yes, he couldn't gain back time on the ascent. Provisional 4th though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Karnulin was the strongest on the climb and had yet to defend a few seconds on Koshevoy and Squire:

37'29" for the best time, beating Koshevoy by 6 seconds and Squire by 7 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_021.jpg

A great stage-win for Karnulin, who remains a real threat for the GC podium that way. A lot of the top climbers struggled today, with some major losers like Penasa and Solis in particular. Panayotov, Bennett and Pozzovivo as the biggest winners behind Karnulin then. Also Rujano and Eastman (as 21st) did fairly well eventually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2HC/andorra/MG17_andorra_4_022.jpg

Valls, however, had such a comfortable gap, that he remains the clear leader in the GC. Penasa now 1'07" behind, but with still a comfortable gap on Anacona as 3rd (3.41).

Karnulin up to 4th with 4'35" on Valls, Bennett a narrow 5th ahead of Panayotov. Cataldo 7th ahead of Pozzovivo, who moved up to 8th ahead of Bardet and Solis. A tough day for the latter, who's now more than six minutes behind Valls and just a few seconds ahead of Campero and De Marchi.
