Criterium du Dauphine Libere Stage 4
Name MON STA RES ACC Sicard 82 80 79 70 Cattaneo 82 76 80 70 Monsalve 81 79 80 73 Dekker 81 77 82 71 Abal 81 74 77 73 Pinot 80 76 79 69 Quintana 81 77 76 65 Galta 81 78 79 62 Nerz 80 75 72 68 Reis 80 78 76 63 Carapaz 80 71 76 64 Nibali 81 77 76 58
Two riders went away early on this stage. Gastauer is more than 15' down in the GC after a crash on the first and a poor ITT. Smirnovs is the other, and is more than 8' down.
Mager and Tratnik leave the peloton behind as well.
Soon after, it is Edet and Landa getting away.
All six riders are now together with 170 km to go. Their lead on the pack is already at 2'18".
Just before the first climb of the day starts, KOM leader David attacks from the pack in search of the break.
He caught up but is dropped again 8 km from the top of the climb.
Edet takes maximum points on the first KOM sprint. He is followed by Mager, Smirnovs, Gastauer, Tratnik, Landa and David.
Furdi attacks 1.5 km from top of climb.
The break crosses the second KOM point. Smirnovs wins the sprint followed by Edet, Mager, Tratnik and Gastauer. David has already lost his jersey.
The situation at this point is as follows:
E1 -> Edet, Mager, Tratnik, Smirnovs, Gastauer, Landa
E2 (5'36" ) -> David
E3 (8'12" ) -> Furdi
Peloton (10'51" ) -> 168 riders
Furdi catches David on top of the second climb.
Viennet, currently 2nd in the GC, has been dropped.
So has Haugard, who is even further behind.
As it stands, Mager is the virtual GC leader on the road!
David and Furdi are caught by the pack on the third climb.
Edet wins the third KOM sprint, taking the lead in the standings. Tratnik, Mager, Gastauer and Smirnovs cross the line next. Landa has been distanced.
GC leader Howson has been dropped on this climb and is already a long way back.
Siskevicius, McCarthy and Bystrom are among others who cannot keep up with the climbers.
Penldeton's and Orange lead the peloton over the climb. Only 39 riders left. Their deficit has come down to 7'55". All the pre-race favourites are still here but almost all of the specialist punchers have been dropped.
With 50 km to go, the break is still together while the peloton has swelled in size to 47 riders. The gap now stands at 6'14". Jack Haig is the virtual Yellow Jersey.
48 km. Dzhus, McCarthy and Aasvold attack from the peloton. The Ayubowan rider has recovered after being dropped earlier.
Three more riders have a go as Foliforov, Didier and Kolar are the next to follow. No reaction as such from the favourites yet.
Mager takes the intermediate sprint bonifications ahead of Gastauer and Landa.
As the start the fourth climb, the situation stands like this:
E1 -> Edet, Mager, Tratnik, Smirnovs, Gastauer, Landa
E2 (1'52" ) -> Dzhus, McCarthy, Aasvold
E3 (2'52" ) -> Foliforov
E4 (3'27" ) -> Kolar, Didier
Peloton (6'58" ) -> 83 riders, including a lot of the punchers who have made it back. Howson hasn't however.
4 km from the top of the climb, the break starts to disintegrate. Edet is the strongest and leads by 12" from Tratnik. Another 12" back is Gastauer, just ahead of Smirnovs and Mager. Landa is nearly a minute back.
Monsalve, Abal and Dekker start to ride away from the pack with Haig, Di Gregorio and Sicard following. Egger is chasing from the pack, trying to protect Cattaneo's position.
Edet now has a sizeable lead at the front to everyone except Tratnik, with the rest of the riders strewn singly or in twos or three on the mountain. He takes the KOM points and cements his jersey for the day. Here's how the situation looks in detail:
E1 -> Edet
E2 (20" ) -> Tratnik
E3 (1'20" ) -> Gastauer
E4 (1'44" ) -> Smirnovs, Mager
E5 (2'8" ) -> Dzhus
E6 (2'36" ) -> Landa
E7 (3'11 ) -> Foliforov
E8 (4'19" ) -> Aasvold
E9 (4'38" ) -> Monsalve, Abal, Dekker
E10 (5'28" ) -> Didier, Carthy, Kolar, Di Gregorio, Sicard, Haig
E11 (5'54" ) -> Egger, Nibali, Nairo Quintana, Cattaneo
E12 (6'20" ) -> Reis (Porto - Prio), Galta, Hirt
Peloton (6'35" ) -> Nerz, Kangert, Pinot, Carapaz, Formolo (+25)
Edet maintains a 17" lead over Tratnik he starts the climb to the finish. Behind them, Dzhus has caught up to Mager and Smirnovs.
Dekker, Abal and Monsalve are now riding with Landa, Foliforov and McCarthy.
Aasvold has fallen behind the Sicard group (in picture below).
The Nibali and Reis (Porto - Prio) groups are together and have been joined by Pinot, Nerz and Sosnitskiy from the peloton. Kangert, Carapaz and Formolo remain in the pack.
2 km to go. Edet and Tratnik remain the same distance apart.
Behind them, Dekker, Monsalve and Abal are dropping Landa, Foliforov and Carthy.
Gastauer is caught and dropped by the Smirnovs group.
Nibali catches up to Sicard's group.
Up ahead, Edet takes a brilliant win from the day's break! He survived the attritional stage with aplomb. Tratnik also gets a superb 2nd.
Going back again, the Sicard group catches the Landa group.
Dzhus crosses the line in 3rd, ahead of Smirnovs and Mager. the Nemiroff rider's late attack worked out quite well for him.
Abal and Dekker cross the line together.
Monsalve loses 9" at the end to his rivals but manages to pip Gastauer for 8th.
Sicard is 10th, losing time again, similar to the ITT.
He is followed by Carthy, Nibali, Haig and Foliforov.
Landa completes the top 15.
Di Gregorio leads a group containing Hirt, Nerz, Sosnitskiy, Cattaneo, Pinot, Reis (Porto - Prio), Keinath, Nairo Quintana, Egger and Galta.
Today's winner - Nicolas Edet.
The new GC leader - Thomas Dekker.
The GC has turned on it's head once again following the ITT. Dekker now leads from Abal by just 7 seconds. Haig is 3rd overall and leads the U25s. Edet moves up to 8th in the GC and is the KOM leader. Tratnik is up to 11th and 2nd in the GC and KOM, respecively. No changes at the top of the Points standings. Orange take the lead in the Teams standings.
