The ITT of the Tour de Suisse should be interesting, there are some of the world's best and worst time triallists on show here. The stage favourites include Fiedler and Zmorka, both of Porto-Prio, and from the GC men Pluchkin and Taaramäe. However due to the TTT most of the world's top time triallists are here so it's a very open field. Both Machado and Schleck aren't bad time triallists by any stretch of the imagination but will likely lose time to the more pure stage racers.
In the war for the white jersey, expect Herklotz to strike back big time against Olivier after the Dutchman caught up to within 15 seconds of him in style yesterday.
Predatsch sets the early benchmark of 26'35 for the course.
Gonzalez Salas is next to take the hot-seat, shaving 27 seconds off Predatsch's time, finishing in 26'07.
Storming through the first checkpoint though is Kittel, who also takes out the new best time for the day in under 26 minutes, at 25'58.
Also recently Frison and Sütterlin coming in 3rd and 4th respectively, 31 seconds down each.
Not a lot of Swiss success outside of adopted Costa Rican Amador this week, but Schär sets the third best time here.
Zmorka is a tad underwhelming, only managing a provisional third.
His teammate Fiedler gets closer to Kittel but is 12 seconds away in third. Nobody touching Kittel or Gonzalez for a while, will any GC men do it?
Rosskopf showed some surprising form finishing in the same group as Schleck yesterday and continues it here, coming in fourth, just 16 seconds behind Kittel.
Someone with a chance to move up in the pecking order here is Dutch Champion Martijn Keizer. He's been unlucky at times this week being outshone a bit by his younger teammate Olivier, but sets a good time which should see him come out of today a lot more positive in search of a higher GC rank over the final two days. He's third, just 9 seconds behind Kittel.
It was a stage from hell for Madrazo yesterday - after looking strong, picking the right moves but not having the extra punch on days 3 and 4 he collapsed yesterday and conceded several minutes. He's still in the top 10 on GC but today he sets a fairly average time - he should have been looking to improve his standing here. 58 seconds down on Kittel, means he'll only just lose a spot in the rankings to Keizer.
Tim Wellens has looked strong but missed the crucial moves so far in this race - today isn't a great or horrible day for him, and he'll concede time but not lose any places to Madrazo and Keizer.
One of the stories of yesterday was the strength of Olivier as he launched an assault on the top 5 GC and on Herklotz for the red and white jersey of best young rider. He's cut his losses to 1'26 behind Kittel, not bad at all.
Herklotz struggled yesterday but thanks to finding himself in a big group managed to just hold onto the white and red jersey. He finishes a minute down on the best time and extends his lead over Olivier to 37 seconds going into tomorrow's mountain stage.
Amador couldn't follow the big moves of yesterday's mountain but managed to finish on the same time as Schleck and other rivals on the line. He's got a good chance to gain some time here and should do just that with a top 10 performance, just 20 seconds down, solidifying his lead over anybody below him.
Schleck performs well to his credit and only drops 17 seconds to Amador, keeping his 4th place.
The former WC in this discipline, Aleksandr Pluchkin should be looking to overtake Machado for second on GC here. He drops time to Amador but gains it on Schleck, 26 seconds off the best time.
In the black points jersey (he's really 2nd there, as he is in every classification to Taaramäe) is Tiago Machado. He may have been worried of slipping to third at the start of the day but performs very well to put 7 seconds into Pluchkin and 1 into Amador. However unexpectedly he also gains time on
Taaramäe, who has an off-ish day for the first time this week and comes in 34 seconds down and loses time to Amador, Machado and Pluchkin. He'll hold onto yellow but won't get his fourth stage win here. Today is for
Marcel Kittel! The big German accepts the crowd's applause with a big grin and a salute after a clinical (is it racist if I say efficient?) performance.
Not too much GC action today with nobody moving inside the top 10 and not too many gaps. Who will we see make the race tomorrow? Taaramäe showed his first sign of any weakness here whilst Machado continued his rich vein of form. Schleck looks to have shaken off the bad form of yesterday, as has Amador. Pluchkin is still flying under the radar a bit in third. Further behind what is a solid top 5, in 6th and 7th are Herklotz and Olivier. One has gone from a stunning start to showing signs of tiredness, the other only has improved every day. That duel should be very entertaining viewing, as will the struggles of Wellens, Madrazo and Keizer further down. Many interesting names also lurk in the top 20 riders, all of whom have shown sparks of brilliance - or dissapointment. Alarcon has been firmly in the latter category but showed signs of life on stage 6 - before slipping to 21st today in what is not his preferred environment - will we see any of the big moves we know he’s capable of? Kritskiy also showed some form today after a terrible week - will we see him joining any attacks to hunt stages? We'll find out tomorrow. Good night.
