Another HC climb features today but it's a hilly rated stage due to the shorter, punchier finish and the lack of other mountains. Machado has grabbed the lead after an epic stage yesterday and it's all very tight and poised for great GC racing this week. Today should see a battle between GC men, specialist puncheurs and the break for the win. Unfortunately it's not as sunny as the last few days, some overcast weather greeting the riders.
After a lot of varying attempts the breakaway is formed, it's Gallego Martin,
Vermeltfoort and
Hoem. The latter two are strong puncheurs and Hoem is on the offensive today again after being part of the mid-stage moves yesterday. He's the only one here with KoM points (4) and also the top ranked on GC, in 30th, 6 minutes down. He also won the first intermediate sprint of the day, being the only one who cared.
The foothills of the big climb are causing trouble for many: among their number surprisingly one of today's favourites Vakoc and one of the many surprise packages of yesterday and 11th on GC, Novikov. Both managers will be praying they make it back to the peloton safely.
They do, but the cycling gods of screwing over riders demand retribution: Morton is dropping, continuing his torrid time here. So does Kritskiy, who's having another bad race, and Van Avermaet, who was one of the favourites today and looked in good form on stage 1.
The peloton going at it very hard, already catching the breakaway with 5km to the summit. Just 88 riders left and now Dowsett is not among them, a big blow to Taaramäe.
With 2km to go to the summit Ignatenko is now on the attack: whether it's for the KOM (he's on 6 points), to resurrect a breakaway (he was involved in failed moves) or both, we don' know yet.
Nobody follows him and he takes the 20 points and a minute's lead into the downhill. Meanwhile Bellis has dropped - this is not one for the puncheurs, apparently. Agudelo does too, which is a blow for Madrazo.
Benito is going to attempt a bridge now to Ignatenko, who has kept a minute and a half lead to the bottom of the descent. He's joined by Kennaugh, Van der Velde and Pedrero.
Also word is coming through that Bellis has made contact with the peloton again on the descent. And that the quartet have caught up to Ignatenko.
Kennaugh now dominates the KoM as the peloton draws closer to the breakaway. Just over a minute between them with 35km to go, we should see any attacks for the win or GC seconds on the final climb.
And indeed the break is caught with 20km to go.
We could be wrong though as Herklotz picks up where he left off yesterday and attacks with 10km to go! Taaramäe and Machado are first on his wheel!
Eventually though, they can't get a gap to the pack as we start the climb.
5km to go and the yellow jersey Machado is setting pace, with the black points jersey of his companion yesterday Taaramäe close on his wheel. The peloton has been thinned to 29 riders, with many puncheurs dropped but no GC men - yet.
Madrazo on the move! The Spaniard knows he needs time after yesterday and cracks the peloton in two again, forcing clear a move of 11 riders -
Amador, Frank
Herklotz
Schleck
Taaramäe
Wellens
Machado
Pluchkin
Madrazo
Beltran and
Olivier.
Koch is caught between the groups at the moment but is going backwards.
Pain for everybody behind, we see here Dombrowski has attacked the group behind and found Koch waiting for him, and caused a splinter behind him.
A lot of struggling riders however Machado, Taaramäe and Schleck look potent. Herklotz and Wellens barely hold on as Dombrowski is struggling to get the last few metres to the front group. Good news for those in pain: the flatter finish is coming, if they hold on until then they should get the same GC time as the winner.
Wellens and Herklotz just losing touch now, can they fight back? Dombrowski obviously hurting whilst Koch is fighting but doesn't have the legs to catch up.
Under the flamme rouge Machado, Taaramäe, Schleck and Amador seem to be those with the energy for a shot at the win (and some very nice bonus seconds). Behind the order of stranded riders Wellens-Herklotz-Dombrowski-Koch is the same, each losing about 10 seconds to the next.
However, it's more as if none of them have the energy to sprint, and they cross the line with a little sprint that does nothing to change positions. This means Taaramäe takes a second successive stage win and furthers his points lead. Beltran is the only rider to move up much and edges out Amador for fourth for his efforts. Schleck is now within 10 seconds of Machado after beating him to second. You could probably argue that these five deserve a gap to the next three, though.
To his credit Wellens has kept the gap low to the front group and has distanced Herklotz and Dombrowski, who are sprinting each other for the top 10, and the clock for every second. Dombrowski is the winner of that battle.
The biggest winner today looks to be Wellens (who's controversially not been given a gap to the front 8), Beltran or Olivier by doing so well, the biggest loser Herklotz after an optimistic attack will slide away from Machado at the top of the standings. Taaramäe again the strongest, a smart race following Herklotz, Machado and Madrazo then leading the race home and fending off any sprint rivals. Time for Wiesenhof to get him a top class TTT team, because right now he looks very good. Schleck seems to be biding his time, whilst Madrazo tried but the form isn't quite there. Pluchkin looks ominous but also having an ordinary race so far, not doing much.
