Post Danmark Rundt - Stage 1
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_000.png

The Post Danmark Rundt kicks off with an easy flat stage. Panflat. No notable winds either. Amongst the sprinters, we have Lo Cicero, Mohs, Kennaugh and Appollonio as the favorites. Followed by Maksimov, Nelson, Guillén and maybe Van Asbroeck. Several more possible threats for a stage-win though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_001.jpg

It takes a few attempts to finally see, who's making the break of the day:

#1: Sebright, Konte, Mamykin, Leung, Rive
#2: Oka, Nolf, Vega, Thomas, Politt
#3: Thomas, M Van Niekerk
#4: Thomas, M Van Niekerk, Nolf, M Walsleben

And three of this latest attempt would eventually make it into the breakaway, joined by another rider:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Van Niekerk
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Nolf
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Vega

Two well known cobblers in the group, that would be allowed to establish a 4 minutes gap quickly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_002.jpg

Halfway through the stage (88km left), we see the first crash back in the peloton. 14 riders involved, some notable names, unfortunatelly:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Appollonio
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Paillot
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Ford
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ovechkin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Trusov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Cisse
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Ayoune

Two of the fastest sprinters and two of the best TT specialists, with Paillot maybe as the more promising for a good GC result here. The good news is, that they would all make it back to the peloton quickly (about 8km later). Team Ticos brought their whole squad back to pull their sprint leader back to the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_003.jpg

Thomas would dominate the two intermediate sprints and the break leads by almost 3 minutes with now 49km remaining:

Provisional Points: Thomas 12, Van Niekerk 4, Nolf 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_004.jpg

21km to go and the peloton is still trying to close the gap, that is at 1'16" to this point:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen leading the pack with Orange and Fablok as the hardest working teams in the chase. Also De Valio with some support by times. They seem to be in control so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_005.jpg

But the gap is still not closed with now less than 5km to go!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Thomas accelerates from the breakaway, dropping his former companions easily. Surely a strong roleur and he's now trying to benefit from his skills on flat roads.

The peloton in striking distance though, as they are approximately 30 seconds in arrears.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_006.jpg

2.5km to go for the pack, that has swallowed the former three breakaway riders. Thomas still about 20 seconds ahead though!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen still at the front, now opening up a gap on his team's and Orange's train:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Tronet
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Cisse
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Maksimov

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Itami
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Vanoverscheldepcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Nolf

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Asbroeck
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Van der Sandepcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Appollonio

Lo Cicero yet missing at the very front, but he ain't far behind. Opposing to Guillén, who actually might have been hurt in the crash earlier on!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_007.jpg

Cohen is catching up to Thomas with 1.4km to go! A clear gap behind him, where Orange is leading the thing with the final kilometre already approaching!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_008.jpg

And now the gap is closed, 1km left! Thomas and Cohen significally slower than the nearing sprinters:

Kennaugh finally catching his leadout's wheel, with Maksimov still there. Nelson and Itami right behind Kennaugh.

Guardini now all for himself, surely no great train from Fablok here: Mohs further behind with Bouhanni, Serebriakov and Van Asbroeck at his side.

Lo Cicero finally popping up!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_009.jpg

It looks like we will get a tight sprint here: Kennaugh now on his own, yet leading with a small margin on several riders, who are shoulder to shoulder:

Bouhanni, Maksimov, Guardini/Mohs, Serebriakov, Nelson, Itami!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_010.jpg

With the finish approaching, we still have Kennaugh at the front, but Bouhanni is on the same level now!

Guardini can't keep his speed, but there's still Mohs in contention for line honours. Same goes for Nelson, Maksimov, Serebriakov, Itami. Also Van der Sande hanging on, while Lo Cicero has yet to join those 9 riders at the front..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_011.jpg

They are almost at the same speed now, as we still have Kennaugh and Bouhanni in the most promising positions! The other sprinters struggle to make up those few centimetres. Nelson with a small advantage over Itami and Serebriakov..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_012.jpg

..but the win is decided between Kennaugh and Bouhanni. A photo finish:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh lungs in for the victory, a strong pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni has to settle for a close runner-up! What a thrilling sprint we've seen here, but the long leading Kennaugh held on to take the opener.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_013.jpg

A similar tight decision for 3rd then: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson had the better end and completes the podium of the day! Surely a great way to start the race with such a packed field of sprinters.

Unlucky, but still surprisingly strong 4th for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Itami ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Serebriakov. Surely a nice day for those sprinters, who weren't considered the top favorites for the stage.

Maksimov 6th ahead of Mohs, who will have to blame his train today. Cohen went wild and Mohs never got himself to Guardini's wheel. The latter totally cracked to finish 14th eventually.

Van Asbroeck, Van der Sande and Vanoverschelde completing the Top-10 ahead of a disappointing Lo Cicero and Reinhardt. Also Appollonio (17th) didn't look too good and we may wonder, if he's been hurt in the crash as well? Tomorrow will probably tell the whole story then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/post/MG17_post_1_014.jpg

Kennaugh the first GC leader ahead of Bouhanni and Thomas, who finished safely in the pack. A great day for Podium Ambition with the strongest escapee and Nelson (4th in the GC) sprinting to a podium.
