Olympia's Tour: Stage 6
Tamijo
[C1] Olympia's Tour

Stage 6 Elst – Reuver 110.7 km

Today we start in Elst, first mentioned in documents from 726AD, in prehistoric times there was an open air sanctuary and on the same location Gallo-Roman temple was built about 50 AD.
Today a town of about 22.000 citizens.

From Elst the route follow a line south close to the German border, heading for the final race finish in Reuver, a village originated in the Middle Ages, first mentioned in 1547, today the village has 6,400 inhabitants

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/00Prof.jpg

A very flat short route with just a single hill sprint outside of Groesbeek and an intermediate sprint in the municipality Bergen.

The 6 KoM point can change who will win the KoM, Benoot, Velits and Würtz all possible winners, also Contreras can get on par with Benoot

Such a flat route should normally not change the GC, but with just 1” between 1st and 2nd, you never know.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/00Fav.jpg

The weather is fine, sunny with very little wind.

Before the peloton even leaves Elst, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Aert opens the race, quick to get on wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Lindgren, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Lawless

Comming from further back in the peloton first pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Paluta then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Van der Ploeg and finaly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Usandizaga now lying between the first group and the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/01.jpg

A few kilometers more and also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes attack.

Right now the peloton seems undecided, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Robert in front but no organized chase, pace 43 km/h.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/02.jpg

After another two minutes the peloton decides that a breakaway of this size is too dangerous, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Nareklishvili, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Omarsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Samoilev and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Zemlyakov, makes a pace line at 59 km/h.

The pace also very hot up front, but still the last rider pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes makes contact, now 10 riders in the first group.

Distance 2’12, 7.6 km to the climb.

If this doesn’t change pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot will win the KoM classification even if he does not get anything on the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/03.jpg

With a little more that 7km km to the climb, the peloton stop the hard chase. The distance start to increase, when the breakaway start the climb it is 3’19”

Not really necessary, but for some reason pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot attacks from 1.5 km, soon pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang counters, makes more sense for them to get into this competition.

Result of KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Novak
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/04.jpg

After the KoM the distance is 3’47, from here pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Sterbini moves to the front and starts to single handed reduce the distance, behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Ferrero – Samruk but it is only Sterbini pulling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Lindgren sitting in the breakaway is 30th in the GC at just 1’07, could be dangerous if the peloton cannot control this rather lager group.

75 km left, distance 2’39

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/06.jpg

Without fight pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes wins the intermediant sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Usandizaga and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Novak

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Grivko and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Tolhoek have started taking turns with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Sterbini.

60 km to go, distance 1’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/07.jpg

50 km 1’46
40 km 1’19
30 km 1’23

The pace is very high, peloton speed about 56 km/hour, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Sakellaridis have taken over as main pace setter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/08.jpg

25 km to the line, even though there is no wind the peloton break over, 31 riders lose contact no top GC riders, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Cornu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Robert takes another blow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/09.jpg

In the peloton a longer pace line is now up, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Pszczolarski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Bialoblocki, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Samoilev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Walker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Sterbini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Reckweg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Sagan

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes leads the breakaway under the 20 km banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/10.jpg

15 km 1’08

10 km 1’06
Peloton is led by this pace line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kolev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Pszczolarski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Bialoblocki, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Reckweg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Padun

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/11.jpg

6 km left peloton at 1’03
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Usandizaga lose contact with the breakaway.

5 km left peloton at 55”, do not seem impossible for the breakaway, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Novak first under the banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/12.jpg

Setup in the breakaway 2.7 km to go, peloton at 35”
From here it will be a very technical finish with a lot of sharp turns.

Right behind those we also see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Thwaites

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/13.jpg

1.9 km for the breakaway

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang about a wheel length in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes, behind De Haes 2-3 meters to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Novak.

Another 2 meters down to a trio almost side by side from right to left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Aert, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Lawless and (looking rather bad now) pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Benoot in the Polka Dot’s.

The last three riders another meter or so behind on a line in this order pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Van der Ploeg, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Paluta and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Lindgren

29” down to the peloton, just visible in the background.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/14.jpg

1 km
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes strongest from the break with 7” to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Aert who closed the gap to Wang, the others are basically caught, peloton at 25”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/15.jpg

In the peloton at the exact same moment, the first riders coming out of another sharp curve.

In front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Bennett, on a line right befind him (right to left) pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sobota, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs at wheel of Guardini, at the same level to the far left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson

Another 2-3 meters further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Holloway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/16.jpg

Now 700 meters for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes, 1 km for the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes has 11” to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Aert and 25” to the peloton.

The rest of the breakaway is or are about to be passes by the sprinters, causing some confusion in the first rows. Everyone pressed together close to the right side banner to avoid the slower riders. This can only slow things down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/17.jpg

500 meter for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén as clearly looking the best now, has opened a small gap. The first group of riders behind him is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sobota, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Bennett and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero another row down.

In front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang seems to have found something, now starting a late sprint, has he keep enough for a final attack on the stage victory?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang has a very short blooming, not even enough to get rid of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Aert.

With 100 meters left and officially 7” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes raise his arms in victory, bold to say the least the fast men are very close.

But he had a good feeling and he does win the final stage of Olympia's Tour in Reuver.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/19.jpg

The sprinters have 200 meters, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén first at the right side, in the middle pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Holloway

Behind Holloway pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero, at the same level pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson far left.
Behind Lo Cicero the cluster of riders are, approx. in this ordre:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Wang, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sobota, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Aert, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Bennett

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/20.jpg

100 meters left for the sprinters.
It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Holloway side by side.

A little further back at the left side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh a wheel length in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero in next row, and then from right to left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/21.jpg

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Holloway 2nd, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh 3rd, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén 4th,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson 5th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Pelucchi 6th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss 7th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme 8th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage6/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre 9th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero rounds of top 10

As expected Mikhail Ignatiev wins the GC in front of Ian Stannard and Elia Viviani
