Vuelta a Espana - Stage 18
Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 18 Andorra – Peyragudes 230.3 km

After yesterday’s Time Trial, we are facing 3 mountain stages. The longest today, but not necessarily the hardest.
The stage starts in Andorra la Vella, the capital of the Principality of Andorra. The old town houses a very old church Santa Coloma from the 9th-century, its 12th century mural paintings was stolen by "Nazi Germany” now returned to Andorra.

From Andorra the route travels south into Spain, then north west over two climbs in the Spanish Pyrenees before crossing the 2nd border today into France, heading for the Peyragudes mountain pass.

The stage is very long, and will require not only endurance but also the ability to distribute the energy correctly, will be crucial not to burn out early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/00fav.jpg

It is partly clouded, with no wind at all.

Less than 2 km since the stage started, and we get the first attack pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Parra Bustamente, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager and soon after also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/01.jpg

Just another 5 km and another group attack, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Novikov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Herrada, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Sergis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Figueiredo

Just as the riders turn left to start Coll Del Canto, 25km 4.4%, the groups melt into a 12 riders breakaway, distance 2’25”

Best places in CG is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen, 26th at 37’52”

Two riders well placed in Youth competition, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager 7th at 40’59” and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger 8th at 45’27”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/02.jpg

An unexpected nervousness seem to hit Vesuvio and on some of the harder sections of this early climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png A. Schleck is leading the peloton, not such a good idea on this long stage.

The result is that we get a very early loss of many riders, who will now form the gruppetto.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/03.jpg

The climb flattens out a bit and Vesuvio get their act together, now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Heymes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Frank Schleck leading.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri attempt an early attack for the KoM from 2 km, that was too early and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes take it.

Result of KoM

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen

112 riders left in the peloton when they pass the top, distance is 4’27,

Near the bottom of the downhill a crash in the peloton: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Canty, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Henttala, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png De Gendt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Dunne and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Lopez down.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png F. Schleck and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vanmarcke leading the peloton in an easy pace, many of the dropped and crashed riders coming back, while the distance continues to grow, it is 5’05” when the breakaway starts the next climb.

Port de la Bonaigua, 19.4 km 5.8%

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/05.jpg

2.1 km to the top pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen makes a move from the breakaway. Only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager follows.

Result of KOM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager

When the peloton passes the top the distance is 8’07”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/06.jpg

The distance grows to 9’11” but then the peloton speed up as the descent flattens out getting less dangerous, still led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vesuvio – Accumalux the gap is reduced to just 3’28 in the bottom of the downhill, right after the intermediate sprint in Estenos.

Then we get a new attack from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Nepomnyachsniy (GC 20th), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig (GC 15th)

A little later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Novak attempts to join.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/07.jpg

Port de Balés, 18.7 km at 6.3% - the last 12 km clearly the hardest.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Novak has a hard time connecting to the group in front of him, but after a few kilometers he is joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck coming up from the peloton, and together they make it.

This is the situation with 14 km to the top, 45.2 km to the line.
Breakaway (Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes) 12 riders in front.
At 2’03 Poursuivant (Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig) 5 riders

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vesuvio have taken the consequence of the strong riders in front of them, now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kirsch and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos pulling in front.

Behind them we also see the best GC riders gathering behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png A. Schleck. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado within the first 10 riders, the other top 20 riders not far behind,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/09.jpg

7 Km to the top, the pace it now much higher in the peloton and more riders start dropping. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kirsch has disappeared with only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck

Up front first pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri and later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Herrada was left behind.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Novak also dropped by the 2nd group.

At 2’16 Poursuivant (Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig) 4 riders
At 3’57 Peloton, 86 riders.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Herrada

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/10.jpg

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kirsch back to help pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos lead the pack.

Up front the breakaway is partition into smaller groups.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen in front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes not too far behind them, everyone else more than 1’45 behind.

Almost simultaneous pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager attacks leaving pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen behind, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig attacks from the poursuivant, catching pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra at 2’58
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Novikov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Parra Bustamente at 3’44

6 riders spread between them and the peloton which is now 42 riders at 7’27”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage18/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager starts Col de Peyresourde, 9.8 km at 7.4%, with 1’01 to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen, 2’46 to Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig, and 6’33 to the peloton. 16 km to the finish line.
