The time trial starts in the center of Burgos, form there heading east to the village Cardeñajimeno, the location is part of Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James), then south passing Monastery of San Pedro de Cardena and then turning back west in the village Carcedo de Burgos, through the village Cardeñadijo, before the finish back in Burgos.
Burgos is the capital of Provincia de Burgos, the city dates back to the 800’s were a fortification was build, helping the location to grow, from 931 it was the capital of the county of Castilla and later the Kingdom of Castile.
The profile is mostly flat, with just a relative easy hill climb on the first section up to Cardeñajimeno close to the first time check with gradients between 1.5 and 3.6 %.
The weather is nice with sun and very little wind.
We will start the transmission of the stage at the point where O'Shea takes over the Hot-Seat from, Gretsch, who took it from Campenaerts just minutes ago, those 3 riders with much better time than the other 4 rider who has finish at this point.
O'Shea, should already worry though because the 2nd sector time was already beaten by Kittel with 3” and his 1nd sector also beaten by Kittel, and more impressively by Yatsevich with 4”, if he can keep this up he is in for a fine time.

The fight to get in the Hot-Seat is fierce between Howson and Zmorka , they also get the exact same 2nd sector time, 38’44” 11” faster than Yatsevich.
And unbelievable also the same full time, 54’51” 16 seconds faster than Yatsevich, Zmorka takes the Hot-Seat based on tens of seconds.
In the meantime we get a new best first sector time, Nascimento 21’14” just 1”, how will he perform on the next two sections?

At this point about 100 riders have not started the stage yet.
As mentioned Nascimento had a good first sector but he lost momentum finishing 3rd at full time.
Then we see a rider seemingly about to set a completely now bar for the times to beat, Malori setting first sector 21’06, 7” faster than Nascimento, 2nd sector 38’23”, 17 seconds faster than Nascimento and full time 54’31” taking the Hot-Seat form Zmorka with 20”, you may wonder have we now seen the first top 10 time. But remember we have more than 100 riders yet to come.
Just a few moments later Novak, starting with just a 5th best 1 sector, has improved to 2nd, and also Vangstad have set a surprisingly good time considers what could be expected 7th fastest.

Machado losing 1’48 to Kritskiy
Pluchkin 2nd just 29” behind Kritskiy, will be a needed comeback for him closing in on the top of GC.
Madrazo 8th losing 1’08 to Kritskiy also a good result form him.
Kritskiy
Dombrowski unbelievable 9th losing 1’13” an unexpectedly good result from the American, considering that he is usually not the best in TT’s.
And finally Schleck 16th losing 1’46”, that is acceptable could have been worse he is still leading the Vuelta a Espana
Kritskiy wins the time trail in Burgos, in front of Aleksandr Pluchkin, this was Pluchkin’s 4th podium in the Vuelta.

As expected with a grand tour time trail the result will shake the GC, if not exactly upside down, than at least providing for some remarkable changes.
The top 4 is the same Andy Schleck, Joseph Dombrowski, Angel Madrazo, Aleksandr Pluchkin, but the distance Schleck had is now dramatically reduced.
Timofey Kritskiy passed Tiago Machado for 5th. Peter Velits have jumped up from 11 th to 9th, pushing Yonathan Monsalve out of top 10. Jack Haig moved from 17 th 15th, Yevgeni Nepomnyachsniy moved up to top 20. Jaroslav Kulhavy was pressed out of top 20.
