[PTM] Vuelta a Espana
Stage 16 Piedrahíta – Toledo 199.2 km
The stage start in Piedrahíta, Provincia de Ávila, a small town of about 1900 people, due to its characteristically medieval layout the old town was been declared a Historic Site of Cultural Interest.
Form Piedrahíta we almost immediately starts the only climb Puerto de Chía, a mountain pass between Sierra de Villafranca and La Serrota mountain, between the small villiages Villafranca de la Sierra and San Martín de la Vega del Alberche.
After the climb the route is quite flat right up to the finish in Toledo, Provincia de Toledo.
The city dates back to pre-roman times. Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with extensive monumental and cultural heritage, from a wide range of time periods.
The stage is categorized as flat, and besides the early climb, it may be a bit rolling but with very easy slopes. We must expect a mass sprint finish.
Just a few clouds today, rain is very unlikely, and not much wind.
The stage start almost directly climbing up to Puerto de Chía 11.3 km at 5.2%
At first everyone takes in easy behind a slow Vesuvio lead, but with 4.3 km to the top we get the attack slope about 6%, Lammertink opens, behind him Egger, Wohler, Jensen and Didier
2.6 km to the top
The slope is way too much for Wohler he never gets away for real, but instead first Prades and then Chhetri attack
Jensen wins the KoM
Result of KoM
Jensen
Lammertink
Egger
Didier
Prades
Over the top Konovalovas and Herrada also attack.
173 km to the line, distance from the first riders to the peloton 4’05
We get a huge crash: Bevin, Dees, Izagirre, Koren, Liepins, Sergis, Houle, Vastaranta, Hasta and Castroviejo down.
160 km to the line, distance 5’21, the two first group melt together, now 8 riders in front :
Didier, Lammertink, Konovalovas, Jensen, Prades, Egger, Chhetri and Herrada
The distance grows to 6’55 then Craddock, Carpenter, Dumoulin and Hoem join forces to bring it down.
The breakaway passes the two sprints in Navalmoral de la Sierra and Aldea del Fresno, without taking any notice of them, distance 3’23 with 69 km to the line
40 km 2’03
25 km, distance 1’28 Aegon have now pulled most riders of the front, it is mainly Hoem, Hughes, Vangstad, Duchesne, Galta and Koep
17 km, distance 1’23 Konovalovas attacks from the breakaway, Jensen at his wheel.
The duo in front passes under the 10 km banner, 35” to the poursuivant, 1’11 to the peloton.
At the same time this is the order in the peloton:
Spearhead: van Zyl, Hughes, Vangstad, Galta, Laengen
At the right, Guldhammer with Enger at his wheel Groenewegen, Liepins, Stauff, Aberasturi, Vastaranta.
At the left of Enger McLay with Houle
Santos and Bellis to the left of Vastaranta
6.2 km to the line, up front Jensen attacks leaving his last companion Konovalovas, everyone else is now reeled back in.
The peloton has 4.6 km to the line, distance to Jensen 47”.
Two trains are now clearly forming, in front at the left side Galta, Guldhammer for Enger, right behind them Groenewegen. Nesset also here but not in the line at the moment.
At the right side van Zyl, Laporte for Houle, McLay also here but not in the line.
Just under 3 km left for Jensen and 3.5 km for the peloton. 40” between them, Konovalovas at 24”
Situation in front of the peloton is:
. . Galta. . . Nesset . Laporte . . Guldhammer van Zyl Houle. . Enger Vanmarcke. . Stauff Groenewegen Schleck McLay . Liepins. . . . . . . . . Vastaranta. . . .
2.4 km left for Jensen and 2.9 km for the peloton. 28” between them, Konovalovas is about to get caught.
Santos have made a good move forward now connected to the RBC train.
Situation in front of the peloton is:
. . Nesset Galta Laporte . . . Guldhammer . Houle. . . Enger. Santos. . . . Groenewegen. . . . . Stauff. . . . . Liepins. . . . . Vastaranta. . . . Aberasturi. Schleck. . . Bellis. . .
1.7 km left for Jensen and 2.2 km for the peloton. 24” between them, the sprint has started.
. Nesset Houle. . . Guldhammer Groenewegen Laporte . . Enger Stauff. . . . . . . . . Galta. . . . . . . . . . Liepins. . . . . . . . . Vastaranta Santos
Under the red kite, Jensen is still in front, but it is clearly over for him.
Houle got a nice gap down to Guldhammer, with Enger at wheel.
Groenewegen about to pass on Guldhammer’s right side.
Also Stauff still in this, not far behind Enger.
All the other sprinters seem to be out of it.
600 meters left, Houle still in front.
The others are getting closer though, just 2-3 meters behind him, from left to right on a line, Enger, Guldhammer and Groenewegen
Another 4-5 meters further back Stauff, and at the far left also A. Schleck with a huge gap down to the bunch.
400 meters to the line.
Houle still in front, but Enger is coming very fast on his left side, just a wheel length behind him now.
At the right side Groenewegen also closing in, a cycle length behind Houle.
A little further back A. Schleck is getting very close to Stauff, both about 10 meter back with Guldhammer still in between.
Enger wins in Toledo, in front of Houle.
Enger 2nd stage win and 3rd podium of the Vuelta. Houle claims this 2nd podium.
Groenewegen 3rd claiming his 5th podium.
And then somewhat surprising Schleck 4th in front of Stauff 5th and Guldhammer 6th
Vastaranta beat Bibby for 7th.
And in the bunch sprint it is Zardini in front of Tulik to claim the last 2 slots in top 10, Sigurd Nesset celebrating his team mate’s victory
Not much development in the calcifications, besides that Dylan Groenewegen moved up from 5th to 2nd in points, and Kristian Haugaard Jensen passed Eduard Prades for 9th in KoM.
