Vuelta a Espana - Stage 16
Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 16 Piedrahíta – Toledo 199.2 km

The stage start in Piedrahíta, Provincia de Ávila, a small town of about 1900 people, due to its characteristically medieval layout the old town was been declared a Historic Site of Cultural Interest.

Form Piedrahíta we almost immediately starts the only climb Puerto de Chía, a mountain pass between Sierra de Villafranca and La Serrota mountain, between the small villiages Villafranca de la Sierra and San Martín de la Vega del Alberche.

After the climb the route is quite flat right up to the finish in Toledo, Provincia de Toledo.
The city dates back to pre-roman times. Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with extensive monumental and cultural heritage, from a wide range of time periods.

The stage is categorized as flat, and besides the early climb, it may be a bit rolling but with very easy slopes. We must expect a mass sprint finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/00fav.jpg

Just a few clouds today, rain is very unlikely, and not much wind.

The stage start almost directly climbing up to Puerto de Chía 11.3 km at 5.2%
At first everyone takes in easy behind a slow pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vesuvio lead, but with 4.3 km to the top we get the attack slope about 6%, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink opens, behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Wohler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Didier

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/01.jpg

2.6 km to the top
The slope is way too much for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Wohler he never gets away for real, but instead first pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Prades and then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri attack

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen wins the KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/06.jpg

The breakaway passes the two sprints in Navalmoral de la Sierra and Aldea del Fresno, without taking any notice of them, distance 3’23 with 69 km to the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/07.jpg

40 km 2’03

The duo in front passes under the 10 km banner, 35” to the poursuivant, 1’11 to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/10.jpg

At the same time this is the order in the peloton:
Spearhead: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png van Zyl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen

At the right, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger at his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Vastaranta.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis to the left of Vastaranta

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/11.jpg

6.2 km to the line, up front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen attacks leaving his last companion pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Konovalovas, everyone else is now reeled back in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/12.jpg

The peloton has 4.6 km to the line, distance to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen 47”.

Two trains are now clearly forming, in front at the left side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger, right behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Nesset also here but not in the line at the moment.

At the right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png van Zyl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Laporte for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png McLay also here but not in the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/16.jpg

Under the red kite, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen is still in front, but it is clearly over for him.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle got a nice gap down to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger at wheel.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen about to pass on Guldhammer’s right side.

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff still in this, not far behind Enger.

All the other sprinters seem to be out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/17.jpg

600 meters left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle still in front.
The others are getting closer though, just 2-3 meters behind him, from left to right on a line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen

Another 4-5 meters further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff, and at the far left also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png A. Schleck with a huge gap down to the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/18.jpg

400 meters to the line.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle still in front, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger is coming very fast on his left side, just a wheel length behind him now.

At the right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen also closing in, a cycle length behind Houle.

A little further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png A. Schleck is getting very close to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff, both about 10 meter back with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer still in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger wins in Toledo, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle.

Enger 2nd stage win and 3rd podium of the Vuelta. Houle claims this 2nd podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen 3rd claiming his 5th podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/21.jpg

And then somewhat surprising pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck 4th in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff 5th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer 6th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Vastaranta beat pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bibby for 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/23.jpg

And in the bunch sprint it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Tulik to claim the last 2 slots in top 10, Sigurd Nesset celebrating his team mate’s victory

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage16/24.jpg

Not much development in the calcifications, besides that Dylan Groenewegen moved up from 5th to 2nd in points, and Kristian Haugaard Jensen passed Eduard Prades for 9th in KoM.
