Olympia's Tour: Stage 3
Tamijo
[C1] Olympia's Tour

Stage 3 Noordwijk - Olst 202.4 km

The stage starts in Noordwijk, where we finished yesterday, from there heading east for a sprint in the village Oud-Loosdrecht after 71.5 km, from there north to Flevoland provincie, a huge 1,419 km2 area reclaimed from Zuiderzee. From there further east to a finish in Olst in the center of the Netherlands.

Olst is just a small town of about 5000 residents, first mentioned in 947 as “Holsto”, the town house a thirteenth century church and two old flour windmills from 1782 and 1836.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/00profil.jpg

The route mostly flat, a short hard climb 14.9% should normally not be a problem with 38km to the line, but even though the wind speeds will not be as tough as yesterday we will have strong crosswinds and today on a much longer route, so positions especially before the climb may be important.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/00fav.jpg

Cold, clouded and wind at about 35-40 km/h. could easily turn out to be much harder than the usual flat sprinter stage it looks like on the profile.

Within the first 50 km we see no less than 11 unsuccessful attacks, just to get an idea of who it was: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Koch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Pokidov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Mareczko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Major, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vassdål, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Marin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Rive, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Dabkowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Huynh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Naesen

Pokidov, Mareczko and Rive giving it another go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/01.jpg

About 154 km left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Marin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vassdål, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Velits in front

At 54” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Naesen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Dabkowski

At 1’06 the peloton

We got a crash pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Grivko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Cisse, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Barton and very unlucky pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Robert

They all get up but 3’06 behind the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Naesen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Dabkowski gets caught, and the peloton seems to be content with the four riders in the breakaway finally slowing down.

Perfect seen with the crashed rider’s eyes, they get back.

The best placed rider in the break is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vassdål, 26th at 55”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/03.jpg

Must be the constant fight for position that makes the riders uneasy, there is several crashes even before the peloton gets to the first sprint, so many that the cameras does not catch them all, what we know for sure is that these riders are all down but not at the same time.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Barton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Arifin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Robert (again) pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Albert, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Sterbini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Rolland, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Balloni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Terpstra

The latter so injured that he can no longer continue.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per win the sprint in oud-loosdrecht, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Marin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Velits

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/04.jpg

The breakaway build a lead of about 6’30 with 100 km left, but the peloton starts to pick up pace and when the breakaway sprints passing Hollandse Hout in Flevoland, the distance is reduced to 4’16. Valio – DeLaval doing most of the work.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per win the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Marin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vassdål.

69 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/05.jpg

The peloton gets to the short and only climb, the riders have the wind from behind and it does not cause the peloton to split. The distance is down to 2’35 with 41 km to go.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per win the last sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vassdål and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Velits

With the speed getting higher and higher the first riders drop, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Arifin first he may be hurt by the crash, soon after another 18 riders lose contact.

30 km left with 33 km/h crosswind, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Pökälä and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Samoilev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kolev and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Pedersen pushing the pace up to 60 km/h, this will not only hurt the breakaway, anybody not able to stay up front is in danger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/06.jpg

20 km for the breakaway, they got 1’18

The pace in front is brutal, about 50 km/h into a 40 km/h Head/Crosswind, more and more riders can’t keep up, still Valio – DeLaval and Netia – Vónin sharing the workload.

Important rider to drop between the 20 and 10 km banner, in this order:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Robert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Dempster
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Sterbini
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Ford

Under the 10 km banner, the breakaway has 31”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/07.jpg

The break has just 22” with a little less than 7 kilometers to the line.

Valio – DeLaval let go of the front, it is now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Reckweg, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Padun and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen leading the chase, 60 km/h into a 40 km/h head/crosswind

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Marin is caught.

Another group of 14 riders are cut of, in this group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Havik and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Paillot.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Velits gets caught.

Under the 5km banner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vassdål is the only rider left in front of the peloton, with just 13” the break is soon over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/08.jpg

A very surprising development, a hard push from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen and 6 riders break free in front of the peloton, catching pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Vassdål

the other 6 are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Stepniak, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss

They got 14” with 3.8 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/09.jpg

2.3 km left
From the peloton a train has been formed by Netia – Vónin, attempting to ride up to the six rider in front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Franczak in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sobota and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson also at the end of this train.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen is falling back now, he has certainly fulfilled his duty to perfection.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/10.jpg

1.6 km left
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini leads the 5 riders in front, at his wheel in this order pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss
By the right side of Bouhanni and Goss pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Stepniak seems to fade slowly.

8” down to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Franczak in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Sobota and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson still in that order.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Cohen now 6-8 meters behind that group.

In front of the next group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Pelucchi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Lobato del Valle has started sprinting. Further back also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Ovechkin fast now.
Officially those riders are counted as in a peloton of 67 riders at 16”, but they are closer to Cohen than the others in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/11.jpg

No red kite – but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini still leadout at the 1 km mark, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni almost side by side.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss on Bouhanni’s wheel

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Stepniak gone, just in front of group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme at 8”

The next riders led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Pelucchi seem to have come a little closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni explodes, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss is fast to close the cap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs, they are almost leading side by side clearly between then now

600 meter to the line and the cap to group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme increased to 14”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/13.jpg

300 meters left.

The audience holds their breath, it is still completely even.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/14.jpg

From behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme first with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson is closing in on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini, the fight for 3rd it also wide open.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Mohs has that little bit extra speed in the end to take the stage in Olst in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Nelson strongest in the next group, takes the last podium in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre 4th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme 5th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini 6th

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Bouhanni 7th, must be disappointed was looking so great for so long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/16-1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Lo Cicero wins the bunch sprint for 8th,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C1/Olympia/Stage3/17.jpg

To some surprise no gaps was officially created between the first 91 riders, which seems very unfair to the riders making this stage hard. That means there will be not changes in top 20.

Maxime Vantomme moves up to 2nd and Fabio Silvestre 3rd in points.
In Youth Luca Sterbini and Mads Würtz lose time, making room for David Per and Giorgi Nareklishvili as 4th and 5th.
