Vuelta a Espana - Stage 15
Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 15 Villena - Xorret Del Cati 180.4 km

The stage starts in Villena, Provincia de Alicante, a historical area, with important archeological findings from stone, Copper and Bronze Age including “the Treasure of Villena” 59 objects made of gold, silver, iron and amber with a total weight of almost 10 kilos, the 2nd largest Bronze Age treasure from Europe.

The route move over several mountains in the Alicante region before finishing in Xorret Del Cati, in the mountains between Villena and Alicante.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/00prof.jpg

The stage is officially categorized is hilly, but the profile shows that the climbs are rather long and it may well suit the climber as much as the punchers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/00fav.jpg

The clouds are darker today, than the previous days may or may not be wet roads later.

As soon as the peloton leaves Villena, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri opens the race and 6 riders follow on a line behind him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri best placed in KoM as 8th

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager are brilliant punchers, should a serious threat for a stage win on a route like this. Also Egger, Laengen and Castroviejo with good options on the right day.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz is a strong fighter on the flat, but a bit odd that he has chosen this particular profile.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/01.jpg

The group has 3’33, on the way up to Puerto de Onil, 6.9 km 5.0%
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo opens the attack from 2.2 km, but a strong pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen wins the KoM with ease.

Result of KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz loses some time on the climb but get back quite quickly.

It has been pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vesuvio – Accumalux leading the peloton, but now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Athanasiades, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Zmorka and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Nascimento takes over. Probably realizing that they can’t expect Vesuvio to fight for a stage win with this route profile.
The distance with 115 km to go is 6’09

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/03.jpg

The breakaway gets to Puerto De Tudons 10.5 km 4.9%, with a distance of 4’45
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager attacks form 2.1 km, the slope is 9.2%

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger counter attacks with a kilometer to the top and takes the KoM

Result og KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/05.jpg

A long downhill and then directly starting on the next climb, Puerto de Torre Manzanas 14 km at 4.6%
GC 7th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal and 20th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy sitting rather low in the peloton, reduced to 69 riders over the top. Distance 6’20”

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz how hanging in-between the breakaway and the pack.

In the breakaway pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen attacks for the KoM from 1.3 km, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo able to follow.
But pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo meet his limits, and it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger 2nd over the top behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen

Result of KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger,
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo,

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz adventures are now over he get caught by the bunch. 54 rider makes it over the top in the peloton, all GC top 20 is here, but stage favorite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis was dropped, now 2 minutes behind the pack.

Then Puerto de la Carrasqueta 12.1 km at 4.6%

On the flat section about 2.5 km to the top, again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger at wheel

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Ignatenko leading the peloton on this climb

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger wins the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen

The distance to the peloton is 4’30

Result of KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo

There are 45 riders left in the peloton when they passes the top, distance 5’31, 30 km to the line for the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen have distance the other riders in the breakaway, just the final climb to Alto Xorret Del Cati left, a short but extremely tough climb with sections up to 18%

The situation is
At 1’00” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo

At 3’19 the peloton 45 riders

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos is leading the peloton when they enter the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/08.jpg

As soon as the peloton hits the harder sections pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin attacks. Peloton now at 2’32

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/09.jpg

The attack from Pluchkin, provokes an increase of pace in the group behind him, 7 riders led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König break free in front of the peloton, the others are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt they open a gap of 43” to the other favorites, and also swallow the group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen

Up front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen attacks under the 5km banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado have now also attacked getting close to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin

Meanwhile the big “white jersey” group has also fragmented, some rider getting up to group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck other have fallen further back.

This is an overview of the situation.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen alone in front, 400 meters to the top for him, 4.3 to the line.

At 12” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger

At 1’03 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin

At 1’17 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado

At 1’48 15 rider including: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal

At 2’34 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer
If this do not chance Galta will lose the white jersey.

At 3’05 a group of 26 riders, with GC 7th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal, GC 16th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, GC17th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig and GC 19th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/11.jpg

Things is changing all the time, let’s take a last look at the situation when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin passes over the KoM.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen alone in front, 2.8 km strictly downhill to the line.

Still at just 12” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger

Getting closer at 55” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, unlike though that he will make it to the line first.

At 1’07 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado, just 12” behind Pluchkin, still a podium could be possible

At 1’59 now more than a minute behind Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo

At 2’35 15 riders with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal

The white jersey is again open with both Galta and Lecuisinier in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen takes a solo win on Xorret Del Cati, after sitting in the breakaway for almost 180 km. this was the 4th breakaway win in this edition of Vuelta a Espana

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Egger 2nd at 30”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin 3rd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado 4th both in the same time as Egger, and both banking some very valuable time on their GC rivals.

This was Pluchkin’s 3rd podium of the Vuelta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/15.jpg

At 2’08 the next group
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy 5th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo 6th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck 7th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski 8th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König 9th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier have rejoined this group rounding of top 10, and more importantly taking the white jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve comes in alone at 2’46

At 3’15 the big group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta in the white jersey, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta the big loser today, not only losing the white but also falling from 8th to 10th in GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/stage15/17.jpg

Another important change today was pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado passing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy for GC 5th.

There was some crashed after the GC riders got in, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Benito, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Kononenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Eyob and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne got up and finished, but it was the last race day for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Predatsch and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Burke
