Vuelta a Espana - Stage 14
Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 14 Solares - Lagos of Covadonga 168.1 km

The stage start close to the northern cost of Spain, near the Bay of Biscay, in the Town of Solares. A small town of just 4,000 people. The location is best known due to an early fortification located here, Pico del Castillo from VIII-XI century.

From Solares the route follow the cost west about 130 km until we get to the River Sella near Ribadesella, then turning inland, heading for a hard climb up to Lake Covadonga at an altitude of almost 1100 meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/00prof.jpg

In theory the stage should favor the best GC riders, as it will be hard for any breakaway to build enough distance on the very flat first 150 km, to hold of the best climbers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/00fav.jpg

The weather is very fine today.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero initiates the attack, behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier just like a few days ago clearly the most interesting riders seen from a spectator view, and the most dangerous for the GC, as 16th in GC, 4th in Youth and holding 62 KoM points being 6th in that contest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/01.jpg

3 km later and we got another attack, this time pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Novikov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck lost a lot of time on stage 12, that said he is just as dangerous a climber as Olivier. If these riders join forces and get to the climb with some distance they are a very real threat, the 4 others riders are good climbers too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/02.jpg

The two groups join forces otherwise not much to say about the first 100 km of the stage, they don't fight for the sprints in Hinojedo and Llanes.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy 12 p
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Novikov 8 p
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen 2 each

After the 2nd sprint with a little less than 70km left, the distance is just under 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/03.jpg

The peloton is led by Vesuvio – Accumalux, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kirsch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Heymes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vanmarcke sharing the workload.

28 km to the finish, 12.5 until the climb starts, distance 2’46

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/04.jpg

Largos de Covadonga counts as Hors Catégorie climb, 15.9 km at 6.3%, easy at the first 4 km, then very hard most of the way to the top.

At the exact same moment the climb officially start pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier attacks out of the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/05.jpg

The situation when the peloton hits the climb, remember 4 easy km before it gets tough:
Everyone inside top 20 GC is in this picture besides pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig sitting right behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns (the last Evonik rider in the picture)

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier got 2’48 to the peloton
The group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck 2’20

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier passes under the 10 km banner, this is where the climb start to get very hard.

Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck at 32”

Peloton at 3’00

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/07.jpg

8 km left
Peloton is still led by Vesuvio – Accumalux, no reaction from the GC favorites at this point. But as you may expect weaker riders have started to drop out.

In the poursuivant pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck is starting to suffer, looks like he is still not completely over the crash he had on stage 12.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/08.jpg

7 km left

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos is setting a frantic pace in front of he peloton

Riders after rider drops, the last two to let go was pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Bonnin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla, 22 riders left in the favorite group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/09.jpg

5.2 km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen at 1’04

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Novikov at 1’33

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van den Broeck get swallowed

But much more importantly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck have slowly been drifting backwards in the group, and just now it has been noticed by his teammates, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König stop pulling and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos falls back to help.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin takes the lead, this may be a golden opportunity.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/10.jpg

4.5 km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen at 1’08

The favourites at 1’59, no one did attack to punish pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck, but he is still sitting dangerously low protected by Goos

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy attacks from the 2nd group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/11.jpg

3.8 km to the top for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy at 38” the rest of the breakaway was reeled in.

Now we have got the attack between the favourites, 7 riders have accelerated away. It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo

The times are uncertain but something like 30-40” between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck

All the other favourites sitting in the group with Schleck, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla has come back, indicating this group is not that fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/12.jpg

3.5 km to the top for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck at wheel is fighting to get back to group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin/pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo having left the others in the 3rd group behind.

We do not know the exact times between all the groups at this point, what we know is that from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck is 40”.

From pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck down to the next group 15”, that group is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer.

Behind those another 26” to a group of 11 riders, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta with the white jersey in this group he may well lose it today, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier sitting in the group with Pluchkin/Madrazo, at 2'48 in that competision.

Worth a mention is also that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen did not roll through the Pluchkin/Madrazo group they are still attached.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/13.jpg

3 km to the top for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier

Now we got a better view of all the time differences.

At 26” pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy

It is now Dombrowski leading this group.

At 1’23 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy droped now with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck

The group behind Schleck have also fragmented:
At 1’41 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits
At 1’56 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer
At 2’13 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer

At 2’55 11 riders, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos

The next group, 29 riders at 4’57.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/14.jpg

2.3 Km left for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier

Things are changing very fast in this period, with slopes above 12%.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy have just been caught be the pursuers, but that is not the most important news, because now also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is losing time to the group led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski

This is the situation behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier

At 1’08 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck

At 1’24 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer

At 2’19 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/15.jpg

1.3 km to the top pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier gets caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado

At 35”
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck seems to have gathered strength behind König, he have now caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy have followed Schleck into this group.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve seems to be in trouble, falling out of group Dombrowski, now at level with the Schleck train.

At 1’27 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer

At 1’48 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König

At 2’18 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer

At 2’59 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns
The fight for the white seems to be very close.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/16.jpg

Now what we see over the next 400 meters is almost unreal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck’s attack just won’t stop, from what seemed a very bad situation a few km ago, he now passes rider by rider until he is side by side with stage leader Dombrowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck continues past everyone until he crosses the line with both arms raised in victory, claiming another stage win by “Lagos de Covadonga”

Schleck’s 4th stage win and 7th podium of the Vuelta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier, claiming the last podium as a result of his bold attack today.

This was Dombrowski’s 4th podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo get in 4th, at the same time as the three riders before him.

Then a cap of 35” seconds down to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado 5th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin 6th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy 7th (brilliant result from him), and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier 8th, all in same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy 9th at 49” and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve round of top 10 in 1’01”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage14/21.jpg

Fredrik Strand Galta came in as 21th losing 3’21, that was just enough to ride in white tomorrow, but now just 2” between him and Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier. Also Daan Olivier passed Andris Vosekalns for 3rd in this competition.

There was no change in GC top 3, but getting harder and harder for Aleksandr Pluchkin to get back to a podium position.

Andy Schleck still holds every possible jersey. Joseph Dombrowski passed Angel Madrazo for 3rd in points and 2nd in KoM.

Hard to mention every change in GC, here is an overviev.
