There barely (if at all) is a stage on the MG calendar with more cobble kilometers. Yes, this means more than in Paris Roubaix and it`s a CT event! Right now still more than a dozen riders with very good chances to win the GC hence aggressive riding is expected and surely wanted. All the paves clearly offer many opportunities to do so and while race organization still sees it as a sprinter friendly stage when looking at the betting list, it`s the top cobblers, that are expected to finish the highest.
4 riders in the break with some still trying to close the gap. Interesting the first name as he is a solid cobbler but missed out on day 1 and hence being 4'45 behind and not even the most dangerous in the GC.
Richardson
Van Niekerk (+1'40!)
Lecourt De Billot
Kaislavuo
+50
Biondo
+1'19
Baterdene
+40
Vandenbergh
+15
Goldstein
Very early with 75km to go the group is down to 70 riders and many, many sprinters and helpers are dropped.
But this doesn`t mean that the top specialists won`t crash. It`s one of the best causing a crash right now as Bush hits the side of Cimolai and both go down.
They soon re-join the peloton though.
Yet again the specialists behind. Two top cobblers puncture at the same time! Sabotage? Most likely just a rather dirty part of the roads.
But also Grand and Drucker quickly re-join the group while Connolly struggled for a bit longer after the same issue at that place.
Just 5km later it`s Vandenbergh and Schoonbroodt but both able to join again. With 55km left then, the chaos hopefully ends soon as the peloton is speeding up and stopping again with riders dropping back.
Normally good for the break but today two riders still in front with 23km left and at the start of the last cobbled section, which basically goes until a bit ahead of the finish. Richardson obviously and Lecourt de Billot. But it`s 35s only to the peloton of 53 riders.
5km later Richardson is solo, now having 30s on his former companion and another 50s on the peloton.
Clearly the peloton is not going full risk so far seeing all those issues already on the last section.
Though it`s already too fast for many sprinters. Krieger, Van Poppel or also Vingerling get dropped. For later this means the end of his GC ambitions but also the others at 11th and 22nd weren`t badly placed.
10km mark and yet another top cobbler having a puncture. It`s Verbist and time is running out now.
Meersman (15.) just moments later with the same issue. Quickly 3 team mates drop back and eventually both make it back.
This all shows the rather slow pace and still ~40 riders in the group and Richardson having more than 2min! With 6,5km to go he slowly can think about the stage win as he still looking good.
Behind the fast cobblers move up. Harrison in 3rd position. Horton yet again behind him.
Havik, Thwaites, Kruopis, Haussler, Bar, Croket, Farrar all more or less in the mix.
But stage glory goes to Richardson. After the Azteca fail on day 1, today is some kind of comeback. He obviously was strongest in the group but the peloton mainly missed to catch him 1km before the last section. Once on it, he used the advantage over many helpers and rode away again.
One rider behind apparently had planned to attack but was stopped by the puncture. Hence Verbist had to chase the peloton, then go from back to front and once there he attacked with 2km to go. Far too late for big gaps or the stage but still interesting move.
And it might even work out. Still having a gap under the Flamme Rouge while Saubers Zafferani still chasing.
500m and Verbist struggles.
From behind Harrison and Thwaites coming fast fighting for the bonus seconds.
But it`s Verbist staying in front. Only just though! Millimeters give him the 2nd while Thwaites getting 3rd.
Following are GC leader Harrison and Havik with Matzka, Horton and Croket next.
GC wise though no one able to beat Harrison and the WCC rider takes home the big win.
Havik similar consistent as the Brit and hence getting 2nd in the GC ahead of Thwaites and Horton with Verbist climbing up to 5th.
Per and Drucker combine decent points for Philips, in especially with Van Emden as well as 10th with Bar 8th and Van Keirsbulck in between them.
Lots of riders did not finish todays final stage. Far too many to name them all really as it`s almost half of the peloton.
