Stage 13 Andorra la Vella - Lleida 175.4 km
The stage start in Andorra la Vella the capital of Andorra since 1278, today the city has a population of about 23.000 people. From here the route travels south through the valleys into Spain, then passing over a climb in the south Pyrénées near the village of Bóixols, before the finish in Lleida on the Catalan Central Depression. Lleida is known to have existed form pre-roman times, today a city of about 140.000 people.
Profile
The route is categorized as flat, but it will not be that easy for the sprinter teams, only the last 28 km it flat, otherwise a rather undulated route, that said we must expect a mass sprint finish although maybe from a reduced peloton, unless of course a breakaway fools everybody.
The weather is fine from the start, but there are darker clouds in the sky so it may or may not change. There is very little wind.
Prades opens the stage.
There is no direct counter, but soon others try to get away and it ends with a 5 rider breakaway.
The others are Barbero, Bayly, Declerq and Bagdonas
They don’t even notice the intermediate sprint, when they get to the climb the have got 5’39” to the peloton.
Coll de Boixols, 15.4 km 4.9% - a very uneven climb with constantly changing slopes.
Vesuvio – Accumalux is leading the peloton on the climb, but not fast the distance still growing.
Prades clearly best placed in KoM as 9th with 42 points, opens the sprint from 1.6 km.
Prades takes the KoM, at this point the peloton is at 7’26”
Result of KoM
Prades
Bayly
Barbero
Declerq
Bagdonas
As soon as the climbing is done Craddock, Robov and Guldhammer takes the lead on the peloton starting to bring the gap down.
With 70 km left it is reduced to 4’07”
Nothing much happens over the next 20 km, just that the peloton is slowly getting closer.
We are 50 km from the line, just before the uncategorized climb between the sprints, Alt de Font Llonga 4.4 km 5.5%, distance 3’03”
40 km to the line, distance 2’28”
the pace is high both in the breakaway and in the peloton, we have seen many riders not able to hang on over the top, the most important rider no longer in the peloton is Ulanowski, he is 2’47 behind the bunch.
30 km to the line distance 1’51
Nesset, Robov, Guldhammer, Bjelkmark, Dumoulin and Craddock pulling the pack forward.
13 km to the line, distance 1’20
Aegon – Lavazza have withdrawn from the front of the peloton, now we got Blikra and Abal first, and behind them most of Aker – MOT
When the peloton passes under the 10 km banner the distance is 1’13, this may get close.
6 km to go 1’06, peloton speed is 59 km/h but will it be enough
4.8 km 59” Declerq attacks from the breakaway
4 km to the line for the peloton, this is the setup before the sprint.
. Abal Galta Jensen Guldhammer Stallaert Enger Groenewegen Arndt Aberasturi Nesset Bellis Santos Blikra Vastaranta A.Schleck Houle
At this point Stauff has lost contact.
2.5 km to the line for the break, Declerq did not get away, everything is still very open, 32” to the peloton.
3 km to the line for the peloton.
This is the situation
Jensen Stallaert Nesset Groenewegen Guldhammer Aberasturi Enger Bellis Santos Vastaranta Arndt. Dombrowski
1.8 km for the sprinters, distance 19”
In the sprinter group Jensen with Stallaert and Groenewegen at wheel, has been able to open a gap to the Aker - MOT train behind them.
1.0 km for the breakaway distance 19”
In the breakaway Bayly is first under the red kite.
1.1 km for the sprinters
With an impressive effort from Guldhammer he have taken the front with Enger at wheel, at the right side of them Houle. Behind Enger Arndt and Jensen
At the left side behind Enger, Stallaert with Groenewegen at wheel.
At front Prades has attacked and is riding away from the remaining breakaway riders.
He is not quite there yet, but it looks good for Prades, but let’s take a look at the sprinters first.
Just a few hundred meter to the line, Enger slightly in front of the others, but then suddenly he explodes losing all his pace at once.
Prades wins in Lleida, the 3th breakaway win of this year’s edition
Groenewegen 2nd, Arndt 3rd and Stallaert 4th
This was Groenewegen’s 4th and Arndt’s 2nd podium.
Barbero 5th Houle 6th Bayly 7th, Guldhammer 8th and Enger 9th.
Jensen just manages to hold of the peloton to get in top 10.
The stage does not change a lot in the classifications besides that Dylan Groenewegen moves up from 4th to 2nd in points.
We avoided rain and got another stage where everyone made it to the line, no crash today.
