[PTM] Vuelta a Espana
Stage 11 Múrcia - Orihuela 200.2 km
The stage start in Múrcia, Comunidad autónoma Región de Murcia. The city was founded in 825 by the emir of Córdoba, today the city has an urban population of about 500.000 people.
From Múrcia the route travels north into the Province of Alicante, over two intermediate sprints in Rojales and Callosa de Segura, them over a cat2 climb near Hondón de los Frailes, before going back for a finish in Orihuela.
In its current location Orihuela was setteled by Romans (about 300 AD) later the capital of the Visigothic province of Aurariola (from 576AD)
With a 30 km downhill and then 20 relative flat kilometers up to the finish we must expect a mass sprint finish today, provided the sprinter teams are strong enough after a lot of hard days.
We see a change in weather today, some very dark clouds hanging in the horizon.
Lammertink provokes the early breakaway as soon as the peloton rolls out of Múrcia, he is soon joined by O'Shea Prades Declerq Kozontchuk and Danacik
Hoem single-handed starts to chase them down, the hunt last 18 km before most of them are caught, but Prades makes a last minute 2nd push.
He is later joined by Madushanka Gunman Lammertink and Young, but the sprinters teams have their eyes set in the intermediate sprint Aegon – Lavazza and Spotify – Haglöfs bring it back in time.
Groenewegen takes the sprint in front of Enger and Aberasturi
Now the peloton settels down, again it is Lammertink on the move first, a few kilometers later Duchesne joins him, and we got the breakaway of the day
When the breakaway get to the 2nd sprint they got just 1’06 to the peloton, seem the sprinter team is not in the mood for a breakaway win.
Duchesne wins the sprint in front Lammertink. Again sprint from the peloton, Groenewegen takes the last 2 points
Just as the climb is about to start we get a crash, Konrad, Taubel, van Zyl, Kohl and Rajapakshage
I the meantime the duo in front have started on Alto de Hondón de los Frailes 11.5 km at 4.4%.
They are now building up more distance to the peloton, they got 3’06 when Duchesne opens the KoM sprint from 1.7 km.
Duchesne passes the top first.
Form the peloton first Herrada (KoM 5th), later Hughes (KoM 8th) and Chhetri (KoM 6) has attacked.
Result of KoM:
Duchesne
Lammertink
Herrada
Hughes
Chhetri
When the peloton passest he top Duchesne
and Lammertink has 4’49 to the peloton.
Herrada and
Hughes 1’08
But the peloton start to speed up on the downhill, Herrada and Hughes are reeled in.
With 29 km left, Duchesne
and Lammertink has 2’20, they lost a lot of time over the last 25 km. Mainly Vangstad and Robov leading the pack in this period.
20 km to the line
A longer spear of riders now pulling the bunch, Keizer, Vangstad, Abal, Bjelkmark, Galta, Blikra, Laengen and Nesset
Interesting to see some of those top climbers taking part in this !, distance down to 1’14”
15 Km gap 47”
10 Km gap 21”
The distance is now very low, and the sprinters are getting ready for a mass sprint finish.
This is how it looks in front of the peloton:
Keizer Blikra Abal Koep Nesset Olivier Jensen Lovassy Robov Groenewegen Schleck Stallaert Enger Stauff
To the far left not far behind the above Houle
At the right side also close behind Stauff, Santos, Liepins, Ulanowski, Aberasturi and McLay
The only sprinter who seems completely out of it at this point is Schorn sitting in the last ¼ of the pack, but still some time to get up front.
What looks like an easy task for the sprinter teams, turned out to be a struggle, all the Aegon – Lavazza and Aker – MOT domestics used themselves up, but Duchesne is still in front with just 4 km left.
It is up to Spotify – Haglöfs to close the last 13” down, they have a strong position now, it looks like this:
. Abal Jensen Robov Stallaert Groenewegen Enger Santos Stauff Aberasturi Blikra Liepins Vastaranta Ulanowski Fernandez Houle
Duchesne gets caught just in time for the sprint to start, we still have only one train it is Jensen opening for Stallaert, behind him the line is:
Groenewegen Enger Santos Stauff Aberasturi Liepins
(undefined domestic) Vastaranta Ulanowski Fernandez
The rider by his side is not Houle, he got blocked and is just about to get out of the corner.
It will be Stallaert first under the Red kite, on his wheel Groenewegen.
Enger has left Groenewegen wheel now trying to pass on his right.
Stauff also left Santos wheel, now trying to pass Engers right side, Santos still at wheel of Enger.
Behind Santos a small gap to (from left to right) Fernandez Vastaranta Aberasturi and Liepins all of those almost side by side.
Behind those left Ulanowski and right Houle who is suddenly back in the competision.
700 meters left – It has started to rain !
It look like is will be between the first 6 riders, the situation is :
Groenewegen Stallaert Enger Stauff Santos Houle: : : : Vastaranta Liepins A. Schleck Fernandez Aberasturi Ulanowski
400 meters left
Enger is fast, now in front even if it is just a few cm to Stauff
Behind them Groenewegen and Stallaert, seem to lose some pace now on line with Santos and Houle
Enger wins in Orihuela, his first stage win in this Vuelta, must be such a relief to the rid of the pressure. His 2nd podium after getting 2nd on stage two.
Groenewegen a close 2nd in from of Stauff 3rd and Santos 4th, a very fine race day from Santos, cleverly using Engers slipstream
This was Groenewegen’s 3rd podium.
Stallaert must be a bit disappointed with 5th looking so good under the kite, Houle 6th, strong comeback from a very poor positioning
Vastaranta 7th, Liepins 8th, Ulanowski 9th and A. Schleck rounds off top 10
Despite the bad forecast the rain started late and everyone came to the line safely again today.
Not much happened to the classification’s today, but with 31 point Sondre Holst Enger moved from 9th to 4th in that competition. With 26 points Dylan Groenewegen moved from 5th to 2nd.
As seen from the points given, the intermediate sprint first handed to Groenewegen was later given to Enger and it was very close.
