Vuelta a Espana - Stage 11
Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 11 Múrcia - Orihuela 200.2 km

The stage start in Múrcia, Comunidad autónoma Región de Murcia. The city was founded in 825 by the emir of Córdoba, today the city has an urban population of about 500.000 people.

From Múrcia the route travels north into the Province of Alicante, over two intermediate sprints in Rojales and Callosa de Segura, them over a cat2 climb near Hondón de los Frailes, before going back for a finish in Orihuela.

In its current location Orihuela was setteled by Romans (about 300 AD) later the capital of the Visigothic province of Aurariola (from 576AD)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/00profile.jpg

With a 30 km downhill and then 20 relative flat kilometers up to the finish we must expect a mass sprint finish today, provided the sprinter teams are strong enough after a lot of hard days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/00fav.jpg

We see a change in weather today, some very dark clouds hanging in the horizon.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink provokes the early breakaway as soon as the peloton rolls out of Múrcia, he is soon joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png O'Shea pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Prades pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Declerq pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Danacik

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoem single-handed starts to chase them down, the hunt last 18 km before most of them are caught, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Prades makes a last minute 2nd push.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/02.jpg

He is later joined by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Young, but the sprinters teams have their eyes set in the intermediate sprint pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon – Lavazza and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Spotify – Haglöfs bring it back in time.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen takes the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/03.jpg

Now the peloton settels down, again it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink on the move first, a few kilometers later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne joins him, and we got the breakaway of the day

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/04.jpg

When the breakaway get to the 2nd sprint they got just 1’06 to the peloton, seem the sprinter team is not in the mood for a breakaway win.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne wins the sprint in front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink. Again sprint from the peloton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen takes the last 2 points

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/05.jpg

Just as the climb is about to start we get a crash, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Taubel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png van Zyl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Kohl and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Rajapakshage

I the meantime the duo in front have started on Alto de Hondón de los Frailes 11.5 km at 4.4%.
They are now building up more distance to the peloton, they got 3’06 when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne opens the KoM sprint from 1.7 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne passes the top first.

Form the peloton first pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Herrada (KoM 5th), later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes (KoM 8th) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri (KoM 6) has attacked.

Result of KoM:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Herrada
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Chhetri

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/07.jpg

When the peloton passest he top pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne
and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink has 4’49 to the peloton.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Herrada and
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes 1’08

But the peloton start to speed up on the downhill, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Herrada and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes are reeled in.

With 29 km left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne
and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink has 2’20, they lost a lot of time over the last 25 km. Mainly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov leading the pack in this period.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/08.jpg

20 km to the line
A longer spear of riders now pulling the bunch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Bjelkmark, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Nesset

Interesting to see some of those top climbers taking part in this !, distance down to 1’14”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/09.jpg

15 Km gap 47”

10 Km gap 21”
The distance is now very low, and the sprinters are getting ready for a mass sprint finish.
This is how it looks in front of the peloton:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Koep

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaertpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff

To the far left not far behind the above pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle
At the right side also close behind Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png McLay

The only sprinter who seems completely out of it at this point is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schorn sitting in the last ¼ of the pack, but still some time to get up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/10.jpg

What looks like an easy task for the sprinter teams, turned out to be a struggle, all the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon – Lavazza and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Aker – MOT domestics used themselves up, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne is still in front with just 4 km left.

It is up to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Spotify – Haglöfs to close the last 13” down, they have a strong position now, it looks like this:
.pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne gets caught just in time for the sprint to start, we still have only one train it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen opening for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert, behind him the line is:
The rider by his side is not pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle, he got blocked and is just about to get out of the corner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/12.jpg

It will be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert first under the Red kite, on his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger has left Groenewegen wheel now trying to pass on his right.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff also left Santos wheel, now trying to pass Engers right side, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos still at wheel of Enger.

Behind Santos a small gap to (from left to right) pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Fernandez pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Vastaranta pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins all of those almost side by side.

Behind those left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski and right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle who is suddenly back in the competision.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/13.jpg

700 meters left – It has started to rain !

It look like is will be between the first 6 riders, the situation is :
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegenpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Fernandez pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/14.jpg

400 meters left
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger is fast, now in front even if it is just a few cm to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff

Behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert, seem to lose some pace now on line with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger wins in Orihuela, his first stage win in this Vuelta, must be such a relief to the rid of the pressure. His 2nd podium after getting 2nd on stage two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen a close 2nd in from of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff 3rd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos 4th, a very fine race day from Santos, cleverly using Engers slipstream

This was Groenewegen’s 3rd podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert must be a bit disappointed with 5th looking so good under the kite, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle 6th, strong comeback from a very poor positioning

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Vastaranta 7th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins 8th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski 9th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png A. Schleck rounds off top 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage11/19.jpg

Despite the bad forecast the rain started late and everyone came to the line safely again today.

Not much happened to the classification’s today, but with 31 point Sondre Holst Enger moved from 9th to 4th in that competition. With 26 points Dylan Groenewegen moved from 5th to 2nd.
As seen from the points given, the intermediate sprint first handed to Groenewegen was later given to Enger and it was very close.
