Tour du Faso - Stage 1
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0001.jpg

Day 1 in Faso. Starting calm with pan flat and decent roads. But then finishing on a super long 20km cobbled section.
To be fair, it`s not the European cobbles, where often rain and mud make it even more difficult but it`s in the middle of the desert on high temperates and hence wind and sand in addition to the cobbles definitely make it just as hard.

Race organisation says it`s a stage for the sprinters and in especially those that can cobble at least decent.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Havik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Thwaites, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison to be named.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0006.jpg

Twice in a row pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vma.png García Cortina beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Vandewalle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Biondo at the intermediate sprint in their attempt to form the breakaway as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0014.jpg

Those three then also in the successful looking group even though it took ages until it worked and in the meantime pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Flaksis as top10 cobbler went solo for a long time and also is with them now but looking exhausted a bit already.

Really interesting move by the former winner but he did win this stage before and might know best.

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnz.png Baterdene trying but hanging a bit behind struggling to close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0018.jpg

And the strong wind also has the first victims. A big group of almost 1/4 of the peloton is having a gap. Being hit hardest are the cobblers of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Sancor and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Azteca.

Not the top cobblers with those teams but definitely chances for a top15 and maybe with luck even a late top10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0023.jpg

Not even on the paves yet but probably due to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Flaksis, the peloton didn`t wait until the final 20km and caught the break just before. 23km to go and everything open again.

The group of dropped riders already 2'30 behind and really struggling to make it back in time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0025.jpg

20km and let the cobbles begin.
World Cycling Center immediately to the front with Venturini, Sanogo and Vasylyuk. Their leading duo of Bush and Harrison clearly a top favourite double for either GC and todays stage.

Krieger, Horton, Bar, Havik, Harrison to name the fast riders, that are in the first rows already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0033.jpg

13km and now the real GC fight starts. WCC decides to let pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison take over and hence giving Bush the leadership.
Immediately lots of gaps open in the peloton as seen in the background.
Horton-Havik-Van Emden-Farrar-Meersman-Verbist to name those right behind the WCC rider.

Being dropped are mainly pure sprinters and helpers such as Hochmann, Thorsen, Von Hoff but surprisingly also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Grand as top5 cobbler. Really unideal for Sauber!

Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Flaksis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Wyss, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Matzka, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Vanderaerden, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Krieger or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Ariesen belong to those being dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0051.jpg

A group of 9 got a small gap over the rest but surprisingly some of the big names were missing. As this also goes for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Bush, Harrison went to the end of the group no longer pacing.
The full group in the following order:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Per
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Verbist
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wpb.png Horton
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Havik
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Van Emden
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Vingerling
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Meersman
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Bar
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wcc.png Harrison

Right behind them a group of 14 riders including many of the big favourites, while the sprinters (Rowe, Haussler, Croket, Kruopis, Meyer, Kreder etc.) are another 1-2 groups behind.

A bit later the first two groups merge and make it 23 riders in total being 55s ahead of another equally sized group.
Hence with the mentioned 9 also Bush, Lebris, Aulas, Vandenbergh, Van Poppel, Drucker, Van Keirsbulck, Farrar, Kireva, Lindemann, Bercz, Ngamoki-Cameron +2 are back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0060.jpg

All the fast men sitting right behind Van Keirsbulck. Harrison, Bar, Vandenbergh, Havik, Horton, Van Poppel, Vingerling, Aulas, Thwaites, Drucker, Bush, Lindemann in this order.
Just 3km left and the roads are better again for the final.

Bad luck for Farrar as he just was dropped together with Bercz, Ngamoki-Cameron and Novardianto.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0067.jpg

Vandenbergh slowly moved up into 2nd position but clearly being not as strong a sprinter as the others.
Harrison in 3rd ahead and Bar even getting some kind of leadout here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0069.jpg

Van Keirsbulck being still in front with 1km to go but he is no sprinter. Same goes for Vandenbergh behind him.

It`s Harrison now with the promising acceleration and Horton behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0071.jpg

Still in front but Vingerling coming fast now and also Horton seems to be faster than Harrison. Will be a close one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0073.jpg

200m and Vingerling seems to be beaten as the road runs out for him.
Though the 1-2 for Great Britain is still unsure about the order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/CT/Faso/mg2017_faso_01_PCM0075.jpg

But Harrison remains. He easily was strongest today, first being responsible for all the selection, when working for Bush. Then allowing others to come back once he stopped to wait for his team mate and then also the fastest in the sprint. Pure domination by the WCC rider and hence the team might consider to swap leadership from now on.

Horton in 2nd with a nice result. His sprint was expected to be good but he kept up with the better cobblers. Same goes even more for Vingerling, who was one of the big surprises today as he isn`t known as great cobbler.

Havik and Thwaites coming next surely having hoped for more and hence only get small bonus seconds. Per and Drucker form a strong Phillips dup next with also Van Emden in 9th only being seperated by Bar in 8th.

The next group with most sprinters at 1'15 and hence the top 19 seem to fight for the GC.

Grand as most underperforming of the day at 2'25 and also Flaksis in that group, who clearly had the wrong tactic today.
