Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 8 Guadix - Lorca 188.9 km

The stage start in Guadix, Provincia de Granada, located at the foot of Sierra Nevada 915 meters above sea level, a complex pre-roman settlement existed from approx. 500 BG, the city is relative small with just 20.000 inhabitants, but due to is many monuments form different historical periods it an important tourist destination.

From Guadix we are heading back northeast up to Lorca, Región de Murcia, just 25 km south of yesterday’s finish in Totana. Lorca has been inhabited uninterruptedly more than 5,500 years, its economy is largely based on agriculture, but the city is also a commercial and service centre in the region with a population of about 100.000.

Today another officially flat stage and again rather undulated, but this time with a long downhill and a 20 km flat section at the end to help the sprinter teams hunt down anything trying to prevent a mass sprint finish.

Again a day of beautiful weather, sun and almost no wind.

Just a few 100 meter from the start a short but very steep section of more than 11%, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Oelerich and behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/01.jpg

That was not to be Vesuvio – Accumalux close it down rapidly.
As soon as the slope flattens out another attempt, first pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Turek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Piccoli a little further back also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Mollema, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov hunt them down (54-56 km/h) sure won’t like a large breakaway today.

A new breakaway pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Laporte, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/03.jpg

These rider are allowed a 2 minute gap, but then behind them we have two more attacks.
First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Turek and yesterday’s stage 2nd pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero.
A litte later also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Neilands and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly

This was a signal to the sprinter teams to reopen the chase, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Craddock, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Koep, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad and a few others up the pace to 60 km/h.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/04.jpg

They manages to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Neilands, then decides to leave it to the remaining 7 riders to form the breakaway of the day. They got 2’41 when they get to the first intermediate sprint in Benamaurel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/05.jpg

For a long period it is now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vesuvio – Accumalux leading the pack, there is no danger to the GC so it is in a relaxed pace. The distance grows to 5’20.

Then with 90km left the sprinter teams take over again, mostly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Craddock, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy
Nobody care about the two intermediate sprints, with 40 km to go the breakaway got 2’26”
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla has a puncture, 5 riders back to help. They have to close 2’30”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/06.jpg

20 km to the line, we are now at the flat section leading up to the finish.

The breakaway got 1’28, peloton speed about 55 km/h, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Spotify – Haglöfs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon – Lavazza and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Aker – MOT sharing the workload.

Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla at 2’09.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/07.jpg

About 10 km to the line for the breakaway, distance 1’22 starting to look possible for the riders in front.
In the peloton Spotify – Haglöfs is now leading with 4 riders in front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Rojas Gil

Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla at 2’44, he will lose time today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/08.jpg

Under the 5 km banner, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly attacks from the breakaway.

Peloton at 1’04” – quite surprisingly it looks like they have given it to the breakaway again today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/09.jpg

3.2 km for the breakaway.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly has 11” to the group behind him. When pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero attacks, at his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Laporte also accelerating at his own line.

The peloton is at 52”, Spotify – Haglöfs train still leading.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/10.jpg

2 km left
There is a 4% uphill section where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero makes contact to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly, the five others at 11”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/11.jpg

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert have made contack to his leadout, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov, behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger and a small gap down to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dumoulin , pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff

But they will be fighting for 8th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero first under the red kite, not far behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly.

The gap down to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Laporte, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio is not large anymore.

2-3 meters further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Turek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/13.jpg

In the peloton pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle have taken advantage of being the best punch amongst the sprinter, passing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert still with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger clued.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle first under the kite with a nice gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/14.jpg

500 meters left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman fast now, just behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly

But it is still pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero in the lead; likely to improve yesterday’s 2nd.

Behind Gunman pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Laporte just a little ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Turek need to find something special now if they are aiming for a top 5 result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/15.jpg

300 meters left
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman really fast now almost side by side with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly still close behind the two. These three riders will surely share the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman wins in Lorca, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly takes the last podium.

This was Barbero’s 2nd podium in the Vuelta, scoring nice points for his manager.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Laporte 4th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio 5th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk 6th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Turek last from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/18.jpg

Although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle started the sprint well, first under the kite, it did not last and he came 12th.

From the peloton it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger 8th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen 9th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff rounding of top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage8/19.jpg

There was as expected not much else to report about the classifications, besides the fact that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla lost 4'51 today, a fall in GC from 12th to 24th just from a bad timed puncture.

Unnoticed by the other riders Gunman sneaked first over both intermediate sprints, giving him a total of 37 points today, also harvesting yesterday he is now 4th in that competition on par with Pluchkin.
No time for Gunman to celebrate on the line but he did get time to kiss the podium girls.
