Vuelta a Espana - Stage 7
Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 7 Petrer – Totana 164.1 km

The stage starts in Petrer, Provincia de Alicante, the area have been inhabited since the Stone Age, but the current settlement was originally an important Muslim village from the Medieval Period.

From there heading south, west of Murcia passing two intermediate sprints in Archena and Alhama de Murcia and a climb southwest of the finish, before a downhill straight to the finish line in Totana, Región de Murcia. The town is mostly known for its La Bastida de Totana, a Bronze Age fortification from approximately 2200 BC, located in the hill’s outside the town.

Profile:

Officially another sprinter stage today but very different from yesterday, we have two hard uncategorised climbs between the sprints and the final cat3 climb to make it harder for the sprinter teams, a win by a strong puncher with a good downhill is not completely impossible.

It is truly spectator weather today, sun but not too hot and no wind at all.

Even before the peloton leaves Petrer the first attack, initiated by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png van Zyl. The other are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Piccoli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Neilands, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Yatsevich and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Zmorka

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/01.jpg

Single-handed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov brings them back.
There is a short ceasefire, before we get a new attempt pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero first, countered by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Chatarunga and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Neilands, but seems for now only Barbero get the necessary opening.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/02.jpg

First an attack from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne brought back.

Then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Didier pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Prades, again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Duchesne and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman.

They get about 45” but again a very active pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov brings them back.

It’s been 30 km still only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero with a little less than a minute, maybe pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero is looking at a long day alone in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/03.jpg

The opportunist don’t rest we soon get another acceleration, this time it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Fankhauser, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Bagdonas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/04.jpg

After a short period where the peloton seems undecided, they slow down. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png F. Schleck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Heymes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Frison, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Teuns sharing responsibility but with a moderate pace.

You may wonder why Vesuvio bother, the best placed rider in the breakaway more than 44 minutes behind in the CG, and they have no sprinter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/05.jpg

The breakaway don’t even notice the sprint in Archera, but we can at least note that the distance is 5’09.

The sprinter teams start to worry and they up the pace significantly after the sprint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Frison, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Teuns and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov working much harder now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/06.jpg

The distance decreases to 3’48 before the two mid-stage uncategorized climbs.

The breakaway is strong in that sort of terrain, but when the peloton passes the top of the last one it is further reduced to 3’16. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad doing most of the work going up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/07.jpg

On the downhill a huge crash, first about 10-15 riders, but more and more fall attempting to pass, a total of more than 30 rider hit the tarmac. Some very prominent names down: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Keizer pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Tolleson

Most of the riders are back in the peloton immediately, so this won’t have an effect on the GC, if we disregard the effect a crash may have on a rider later in the race.

The only rider not getting up in time to catch the peloton is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Rajapakshage, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van der Velde, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Tulik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vysna, they will lose time today

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Teuns and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hirt very badly hurt, they won’t race anymore in this Vuelta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/08.jpg

The peloton reorganise pretty quickly after the teams have realised the damage taken.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dumoulin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Craddock doing the hard work, Spotify – Haglöfs also ready to take over if nessasary.

The distance at the start of the last climb to Alto de la Santa is 1’28”, 12.4 km at 2.4%

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/09.jpg

But the peloton continues to be led by these domestics on the climb, none of them able to match the climbing strength of the breakaway, they start to lose time to the breakaway.

In the breakaway pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Fankhauser starts the sprint for the KoM, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero takes the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Bagdonas and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink
Distance is now 1’54”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/10.jpg

The peloton also start losing time on the downhill, now it has started to look more and more impossible to get the anticipated mass sprint finish

Just 3.6 km to the line, peloton at 2’22
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink attack from the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/11.jpg

In the peloton, it is Euskaltel for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Fernandez, Spotify for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert and Aker for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger almost side by side. They got 4.7 km to the line. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen is sitting alone at about 15th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/12.jpg

2 km to the finish
Another attack from the breakaway pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero trying to close the 11” gap to Lammertink.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/13.jpg

Under the red kite
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink has 9” to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero, 19” to the trio behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/14.jpg

In the peloton two trains are up.
At the right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png De Bondt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Fernandez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Vastaranta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Silva

At the left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Nesset, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink wins in Totana, a deserved winner he was the rider working hardest in the breakaway on the tough sections.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/16.jpg

Back in the peloton 8 riders are almost side by side under the red kite, from right to left (seen from the riders)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/19.jpg

It is a close finish: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen 6th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Stallaert 7th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger 8th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff 9th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Fernandez round of top 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage7/20.jpg

As expected the stage had no influence on the classifications, besides the fact that Dylan Groenewegen came closer to taking the Green Jersey, now second in the competition behind Andy Schleck and thereby he will by wearing Green tomorrow.
