Second stage in the Basque Country and it`s yet another for the "sprinters". That said 6 KoM`s on the way and some just before the finish, hence looking rather difficult and not a pure sprint finish.
Still favourites are listed with all those "low quality" hill sprinters.
3 riders have opened a gap to the peloton and it`s an interesting one as KoM leader Stöhr is one of them.
Sirironnachai and Magnusson are the other two.
Even more interesting as Sirionnachai is going first over the Cat.2 with Stöhr only over the top last. Battaglin and Osorio taking small points by being first in the peloton.
The early Cat.3 was going to random peloton riders.
Next Cat.3 and yet again Stöhr struggles. Being in the breakaway for the 2nd day in a row clearly sees him more exhausted. This time Magnusson ahead of Sirironachai.
This sees Stöhr being in front with 16 points followed by teh two others at 14 points already!
And Magnusson repeats this at the next KoM and hence going into the lead with 20 points now. 18 for the other two.
And as Sirironnachai again in front the next time, it remains close as both hit the 24 points total with Stöhr slowly dropping down. 20 points for him and one more to go to find the decision.
That said 22km left and the gap is down to 2min and not even guaranteed the last KoM goes to the group.
Even more as Team Balkan has highered the pace a lot with WCC`s Lay as well already in the 2nd position.
1,3km to the KoM and just 20s with Stöhr actually being caught already.
And indeed just before the top the group is caught. Though Sirironachai able to go over in 3rd position and hence going into the sole lead by 2 points! Great effort and deserved KoM lead for him.
And now enough of KoM talkings. Not much happened over the stage other than that, hence all the time for it, but now it`s 9,5km to the finish and hence the sprint is taking over.
First though some splits behind. Being hit is 6th in the GC, Stöhr after his break appearance today.
Also Battaglin behind just like the Sauber sprint duo Awang/Manan.
4,5km and Xero in front. Just one long line and no big preperations in this high-speed finish.
Diggle Davison Clarke Mezgec Kruopis Kreder Belletti Ariesen Sonnery Manfred Corti- Thwaites
One team missing though. WCC nowhere to be seen in front and it`s easy to see why.
Castañeda got dropped and the team`s sprint squad waiting for him it seems.
Bad luck for them as this means also Lay is going backwards. As well Visconti and Vasylyuk.
2km and Diggle still in front. Clarke just behind and the pace is high. Great power by the Brit here.
Flamme Rouge and Diggle has paced until now. But now the bad luck starts for Mezgec as he was the first to go around the long line. But just when he came fast, Diggle moved over and totally blocked him. Purpose? Who knows?
Instead Clarke in front being attacked by Kruopis and Kreder now.
Sonnery, Vaquera and Corti also coming fast on the other side.
Kruopis in the lead. Clarke slowly struggling and being passed by Sonnery, Corti and Vaquera.
Clarke is done and can`t go any better. Same for Corti, who drops back. Mezgec now trying to get back to the first rows but it`s mainly Sonnery, Kruopis and Kreder going strong just like Belletti and Ariesen out of nowhere.
Close one. Almost at the line but still 5 riders with realistic chances.
Mezgec likely coming too late for the podium though.
And also Vaquera can be identified easily to not being the winner. Same for Kruopis and Kreder, who is in 3rd position.
Winning is Sonnery. Not sure if sprinter or climber or puncheur. Today form was on his side and he clearly was a sprinter today that survived the hills the best.
Belletti with a strong finish in the end up to 2nd with Kreder as 3rd.
Kruopis, Ariesen, Mazgec next then ahead of Clarke, who was too early in the wind.
This means Kreder remains in the race lead ahead of Sonnery.
