Vuelta a Espana - Stage 3
Tamijo
[PTM] Vuelta a Espana

Stage 3 Alhaurín de la Torre - Caminito del Rey 165 km

The stage starts in Alhaurín de la Torre, Provincia de Málaga. A city originally settled by the Phoenicians sometime between 1000-700 BC. From there the route is heading further inland to the village El Chorro with the Camino del Rey (King's Pathway), a famous and previously deadly pathway from 1901, now reconstructed.

Profile:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/profile.jpg

With 2 climbs and also points at the finish, there will be a possible threat to Dmitri Kozontchuk KoM lead. Also the green jersey is at stake in case a stage winner has more points now, than what Dylan Groenewegen will get today.

The profile is very hilly, expect a good puncher to take the stage today. Hard to tell if we will see any major gaps to effect the GC, we will soon find out.

Again a bright sunny morning in Spain, but today we have a lot more wind (40 km/h)

KoM leaders pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk is quick to launch an attack within the first two kilometres, a group of four riders attempt to follow. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Taubel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dumoulin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/01.jpg

After some fight from the peloton end ends up with just pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk forming todays breakaway. Kozontchuk best placed in GC at 39”, Lammertink the better puncher of the two, actually a very good puncher with a realistic possibility to win a stage in this terrain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/02.jpg

The break has 2’03 getting to the intermediate sprint in Álora, the riders in the break won’t need the points, most likely not the bonus seconds either, but for the sake of the spectators they give it a go. It’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink getting the 6 points.

When the peloton passes only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi really makes an effort for the last two points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/03.jpg

Soon after the sprint we have a solo crash, it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png McLay, he gets up but has to close a 2’42 gap alone. Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Herrada with a puncture have some time behind the bunch.

A few Km before the first KoM climb start, another of yesterday breakaway artists pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka is on it again, a brave rider really not his terrain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/04.jpg

Alto del Veredon 4.1 km at 7% avg.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink start the attack from 2 km, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk does everything he can but there isn’t anything to do.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink gets his first 6 KoM points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/05.jpg

It is Gazelle leading the peloton up the climb, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png De Gendt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Campenaerts, all the GC favorites sitting amongst the frist 20 riders

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka keep a distance of a small minute to the peloton securing the last KoM points.

The first riders got 2’11 to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/06.jpg

That was all from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka, he is reeled in.
After the KoM we see more teams in front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Golovash, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Athanasiades, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Kohl and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Copeland most active.

With 67 km to the line we get a huge crash with: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Eyob, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Faglum Karlsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Kosic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Hughes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Didier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Borisavljevic and unlucky pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Herrada just returning after his puncture.

Worst of all pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Faiers, not able to continue

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/07.jpg

The breakaway get to the intermediate sprint in Bermejo with just 1’17 to the peloton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Lammertink opens the sprint and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk is no challenge for him.

Clearly Kozontchuk is having a hard day trying to follow Lammertink in a terrain that suits him very well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/08.jpg

In the peloton there is no fight for the points, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero takes it simply because he is leading the peloton at that moment.

The pace is hot as mentioned the distance is getting below 1’30, besides pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Koren, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png De Gendt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Neilands and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz taking part in the pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/09.jpg

Just 4 km after the sprint, the terrain changes now with harder climbs. That also changes the composition of the riders leading the peloton, now it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Downey, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Rosch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira and other Porto – Prio riders, setting an intense pace. The breakaway is over with more than 30 km to the line.

The hard pace set by Pendleton's stretch the peloton thin, approaching Alto de Carratraca.

Let’s take a look at the situation between the top riders pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado sitting in 9th with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Silva, right behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski.
There is a small gap behind Dombrowski, down to a larger group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Jensen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin in that ordre.
Every other favorite still with the first 30-35 riders in the peloton, 25.5 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/10.jpg

The climb is 9.6 km with an avg. of 3%.
It the right side a long line if riders are formed behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Rosch setting the pace. The first 9 riders are domestic, behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve.

To the left of them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt moving forward on their own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/11.jpg

Over the top a split happens with just 16 km to the finish line created by the hard pace still set by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Rosch, in front a group 9 riders get 20” on the main bunch.

But it was not to be, they did not work together and was reeled back swiftly, we still have 129 riders in the bunch approaching the final climb to Caminito del Rey, 4.2 km at 6.6 %, hardest at the first half.

The positioning as the climb starts is: A tireless pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Rosch still in front at the right side.
In the second row, from left to right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Konovalovas.

Behind Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck, also in the first 15 riders pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bibby, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, a little further back we see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier, all within the first 25 riders.

A few riders not between the first 129 rider: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Mai, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Brockhoff, they are almost sure to lose some time today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/12.jpg

3 km to the top, slope 7%
Now we see the reason for the hard work provided by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Rosch, as soon as he has to let go of the front pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski accelerated, an alert pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin right on his wheel, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck quick to respond. Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bibby, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier well placed in this critical situation. We also see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Nepomnyachsniy not to far back.

Taking the shorter left side curve pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/13.jpg

2,5 km to the top, slope 7.4%
The intended effect from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski attack did not happen, more than 100 riders still hanging on to the peloton.

The positioning have changes a little, a spear with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve

At their right side, a little behind Schleck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bibby, a little further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer and the race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado

The other riders mentioned above form a line across the road. Now also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira surprisingly joins up.
We also see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier in the mix behind the first riders. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Nesset close to the camera at the bottom of the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/14.jpg

2 km to the top, slope 7%
A few changes most importantly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is now increasing his pace, moving up side by side with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad who was falling back just 500 meter ago, have got a 2nd boost of strength now in 3rd position.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer also improved remarkable now in 7th position at the far right side of the road. The Wiesenhof rider behind him is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, has been amongst the top 15-20 riders for some time and clearly deserves a mention.

The group is officially still 129 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/15.jpg

1.4 km top the top, slope 7.7%

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski aggressive approach that we saw earlier have faded he is falling back to 5th position, In front we now got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, clued to his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad having what I dare call a perfect day so far, and behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck on left and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve on right side.

Besides that, the only major change is that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vysna, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Konovalovas with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Nepomnyachsniy have improved their position moving into the first 15 riders.

But the pace it still not extreme with 129 officially hanging on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/16.jpg

Under the red kit, slope 5.9%
The first four unchanged pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, the latter lost a little compared to Schleck.

Behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier have taken Schleck’s wheel, might be a smart move. Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt behind Monsalve well placed before the final dash.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla at the left (taking the longer path) and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler at the right also improving now in 7 and 8 position.

Race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado seems to be struggling keeping up with the first group of riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/17.jpg

550-600 meters to go, slope 6%
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin opens his sprint from 1st position, a clever move as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad seem to be facing his limitations, and can’t follow. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin opens a clear gap.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve taking the short path best placed. Coming round Konrad on the longer left route pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck 3rd at his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier.

Behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve we got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, and behind his left side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla taking that very long left banner route

The others in this, what we might now call a front group is from left to right:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vysna, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin got 200 meters to the line slope 5.6%, he has a small gap of about 4 meter to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck.

It the right side of the road markings pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve 3rd, and clued to Schleck pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier in 4th position, to his left rear side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla.

At the right side one meter behind Brambilla, on a line from left to right se got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer.

Behind them 4 rider from left to right pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Goos.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski behind Kritskiy and Velits, and to his left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vysna

In the bottom race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado sitting behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad, fighting not to lose time on a bad day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Aleksandr Pluchkin can celebrate a win at Caminito del Rey, and even if there is no time gaps, bonus seconds enough to take over the GC lead, and also the points lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck 2nd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve wins the narrow sprint for 3rd over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla rounding of top 5.

The last points go to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt,pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage3/21.jpg

35 riders get the same time as Pluchkin, so besides an indication of who might be in the best shape, we have to wait until tomorrow’s mountains to get serious caps besides what we got form the TTT.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk kept the KoM and Aker - MOT top sprinter pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger quite impressively came in the first group, leading the youth classification.

For the first time since pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Porto – Prio got the early lead in the team classification on the TTT, now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Gazelle having a small advantage there, something that may well change again tomorrow with finish on Peñas Blancas.
