Vuelta a Espana - Stage 2
Tamijo
Stage 2 Alcalá de Guadaíra – Marbella 170.3 km

The 2nd stage of 2017 Vuelta a Espana, starts in Alcalá de Guadaíra in Provincia Sevilla, the town date back to the earliest European history, settled by Greeks and later Romans. From here the route is heading into the mountains before a long downhill finishing just about 15 km the finish in Marbella in Provincia Málaga, a city and tourist destination by the Mediterranean.

Profile:

Although the stage is considered flat, it is going to be uphill most of the time and may favour the sprinter with some uphill skills like RBC Pro Cycling’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle or even Ayubowan!’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis.

On the two cat.3 climbs on the route, we will find the first KoM holder of the race.

A bright sunny morning in Spain, right from the start we saw a breakaway initiated by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Bagdonas, and several other attacks later, but is was soon clear that the sprinter teams in the peloton was interested in the intermediate sprint in Sevilla coming up after 32.5 km

With 500 meters to the line pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi lining up in the right side in 5th position, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis at the left in 7th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy close to his right rear, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schorn at wheel in 10th and 11th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/01.jpg

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff getting the last 2 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/02.jpg

We get a bit more rumble from the peloton, hunting down another attempt started by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Nurmi, before things settle. Then with 42 km behind us, we get the breakaway of the day it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Nurmi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk, the latter being the better climber, Madushanka the better sprinter if this should go that far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/03.jpg

In the peloton many teams are sharing the workload. With just little wind-speed (8-10 km/hour), surprised to see all the pre-race favourites close to the front, not taking any risk in case the peloton should suddenly break or in case of crash, the pace though are moderate and with 110 km left the distance still increasing, at the moment 5’08.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/04.jpg

The first KoM sprint today is the hardest, Alto de Pruna 4.8 km long with 6.5% avg., from 2.8 km pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk attacks, the others can’t follow and he creates a gap of 44” before he reach the top.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Nurmi 2nd on the KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/05.jpg

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Gretsch and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio leading the peloton up the climb, distance when the reach the top 6’23.

After the KoM there is a series of other uncategorized climbs some with tough gradient. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Gretsch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Goldstein have now seriously upped the pace and the distance is shrinking, over less than 20 km it is reduced by 2’16 to 4’07.

Many on the GC contenders still alert sitting high, especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck always very close to the front. But also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve amongst the first 20 riders. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin further back but inside the first 1/3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/06.jpg

Peloton at 3’28
The trio in front get to the intermediate sprint in Arriate after 107 km, on paper pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka should the the stronger sprinter in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Nurmi if they go for it.

They do, but the result it the opposite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Nurmi, probably because the undulated route has taken its toll.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/07.jpg

56 km to the line still 11.5 km to where the last KoM start, but the ascent actually stats here and with the hardest part first, a short section of 9.8%, distance 2’43 when the peloton starts the climb.

It is now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Oliveira doing most of the work with some help from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Egidio.

It is notable that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck is now in 2nd and 3rd position without any protection.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Machado also amongst the first 20 riders, but all protected.

We also see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger amongst the first 20 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/08.jpg

The 2nd KoM, Alto de Ronda with 44 mostly downhill km to the line, the breakaway has 2’36 to the peloton.

This time the KoM sprint is a lot more close, but again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk claims the 6 points, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka 2nd this time.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk will ride in the king of mountain jersey tomorrow. A little less than 10 km to the start of the downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/09.jpg

On the descent it is getting harder for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka to hold wheel, and he soon has to lets go.

With his extreme downhill skills pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler takes over the chase as soon at the downhill start, cutting the distance down fast.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck either having great legs or being very paranoid, sitting in 2nd position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/10.jpg

The distance at the foot of the downhill is 1’05, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk immediately attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Madushanka get caught and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Nurmi also falling back fast, it is now between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk and the peloton.

In the back of the peloton we spot some sprinters in trouble, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schorn won’t make it to the front neither will pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Tolleson.

4.5 km to the line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk got 23” it is almost over.

The sprinter teams now focus on the mass sprint finish to come.
Two trains up, close to the middle pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger at wheel, behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle

To the left a 3 stage rocket moving forward, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dumoulin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/12.jpg

3 km to the finish, now just 11” for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Kozontchuk.

The two lines we saw earlier are unchanged, the only difference is that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon - Lavazza is now an inch in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Aker – MOT, and that Euskaltel’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini is coming fast at the far left, attempting to get at the wheel of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen

Well placed are also GT riders pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin all right behind the trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/13.jpg

2.5 km left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon – Lavazza’s train is very fast, the break is over.

Behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Vangstad have swung of, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi have gained a bit now side by side with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos right there at Engers wheel.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini did not make it, now behind Santos left.

While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle and now also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis is sitting in a mixed group with falling back lead-out men, in front of the GC favourites and peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/14.jpg

1.5 km to the line.
The 2nd stage of the Aegon – Lavazza rocket burned out to early. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy was not able to start the sprint for Groenewegen and swung of to the right.

Instead it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dumoulin opening the sprint and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen has to close a few meters gap to get on his wheel.

Right behind Groenewegen is now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger but had to start his sprint a bit early to close up. On his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff have moved right to take a line of his own side by side with Aberasturi.

Coming forvard between the two pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos, and here we got pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini now.

At Zardini's wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/15.jpg

First under the red kit is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen very fast having opened a huge gap, at least 10 m.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger next also at the left side.

At the right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff seems to be fast with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos.

At the left side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi side by side with Ulanowski. He got at least 6-7 meter up to Enger.

Right on the full road line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dumoulin.
Behind him two riders, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins right, at his wheel pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini. Just a cycle length further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/16.jpg

Enger opens a gap to the next group rapidly, seems to be between him and Groenewegen, so before we declare a winner, let’s take a look at the close race for the last podium.

With 500 meters to the line, we got 9 riders quite close to each other.
First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff and almost side by side to his left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski.

In third position behind Stauff right side pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos. Just a few cm further back behind Ulanowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle have passed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Aberasturi with a wheel length.

Behind Aberasturi pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis and to his left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini. And two meters further back pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck. Very close to the right side banners also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin have started his sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen wins in Marbella, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen first to ride in the point’s jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/18.jpg

The last podium goes to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Houle with an incredible last 500 meter he has passed Ulanowski, Stauff and Santos.

Aberasturi exploded now riding with almost no momentum, but the rider behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis also had a super last 500 meters, same as Houle he passes Ulanowski, Stauff and Santos to claim 4th.

It is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Santos 5th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Ulanowski 6th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff 7th pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Liepins 8th

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Schleck get past pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini in the last second to claim 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Vuelta/Stage2/19.jpg

The bonus seconds does not change that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Porto - Prio leads the race, but now Rodrigo Nascimento will hand the jersey over to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Tiago Machado, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Marlen Zmorka is still the Yourth classification leader.
