5 Jours de Dunkerque - Stage 4
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_000.png

Stage four and as we're racing at the sea today, it makes sense that we have crosswinds for the first time here: 20-30kmh on the day. No major factor, but surely adding a challenge to a flat stage, that comes with a tricky finishing circuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_001.jpg

The breakaway is quickly found:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Hsu
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Bazzana
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Salas
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Zhao
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Pedersen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Huynh
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png De Haes

Yesterday's breakaway again on the move and Bazzana obviously willing to defend the polka dot. Which he does, as he takes the only mountain sprint ahead of Salas and Zhao. 10 more points for him and Hsu couldn't add another for himself.

We're jumping straight into the final 30km of the race. We're already in the finishing circuit and the breakaway leads by 3 minutes. We had no crash yesterday, but in this challenging corners, there was nasty crash in the peloton - causing a major split! Hard to say, which riders went down, as they all stood up "inside" the peloton, but one thing is for sure: some big names involved and a major split with 103 riders being seperated from the 49-men-peloton now!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Nolf
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Polanc
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Joseph

as the biggest GC names. And many sprinters as well:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Kupfernagel
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Drapac
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Scully
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Peeters

Many many names at the wrong side of the split! With more than 30km remaining, there's of course a chance to fight back. But this big group is already a minute behind the first peloton, that won't stop chasing the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Brambilla is setting the pace at the front of the first peloton and he's supported by Indosaat and Lierse. That's horrible news for Altur in particular, as his big group is now almost two minutes behind with 25km to go!

No mercy for the victims of the split. Altur definitely amongst those, who actually crashed, by the way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Braico and Team UBS leading the second peloton, where Altur is in. They are trying, really, but UBS is the only team supporting Newton Foundation. Two minutes. In 25kms. That's a tough challenge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_005.jpg

And it's becoming a mission impossible: Orange (Kamyshev) still pulling the strings hard and there's some great support with Indosaat. With crosswinds up to 30kmh and the finishing circuit being tricky as hell, it's a really tough day in the saddle.

The first peloton is growing the gap to group Altur: 2'30" with now just 11km remaining!

The early breakaway is still in the lead, by the way: 48" ahead of the chasing pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Bazzana not only secured the polka dot today, he's also aiming for the stage now: 2.6km to go and he counter-attacks a move from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Pedersen!

The first peloton (now reduced to 38 riders) is still 50" in arrears! This looks promising for the escapees.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_007.jpg

The gap is getting smaller though: inside the final 2km, we see the best sprinters at the front of the pack, yet trying to somehow catch the break - which is 26" ahead now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_008.jpg

Bazzana with a notable gap on Pedersen and De Haes, who are all dead empty now! The sprinters are coming closer, but Bazzana has just 800metres to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_009.jpg

Which is enough: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Bazzana with a huge day! Taking the stage and securing the polka dot. It could hardly have go better for Ferrero here. No GC contenders? No problem! Let's just take a stage and the mountain classification.

Behind Bazzana, the gap is down to less than 20 seconds and the sprinters are flying past the other escapees..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_010.jpg

Pedersen as the last one to get swallowed:

Goss as the fastest, with the other sprinters probably fighting for the final podium spot then..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_011.jpg

Yap: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss takes an easy 2nd with the same time as Bazzana. Unlucky to not sprint for line honours then. But still another strong sprint for Goss here.

Vantomee in the leading position in his fight for the podium: Holloway, Van Asbroeck, maybe Kump still there to contest him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_012.jpg

Yes.. and no, as they won't beat him: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Vantomme takes 3rd ahead of a strong finishing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh, who is fighting to defend the points lead afterall! Holloway 5th ahead of Van Asbroeck, Kump, Cisse, Pedersen and Rowe. Wisniowski 11th and comfortably defending the GC lead thanks to Bazzana, Goss and Vantomme denying Kump some bonificiations!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_4_013.jpg

But what a tough day for the GC's 2nd:

+ 2'14" for the big group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur! They really tried to fight back from the major split, but once it occured, it never really looked like they could close the gap. A horrible way to drop down the GC, but there's nothing he can do against it. Of course some tough luck for some more minor GC contenders and sprinters as well.

Another flat stage with some major effect on the GC. Today though, it was a major split after a crash. And crosswinds as well.

So now for the new GC with only one stage to go:

Wisniowski leading by 39 seconds on Holloway and Jans. Kump 4th (0.43) ahead of Van Asbroeck (0.51), Rowe, Vanbilsen, Tsatevich, Morkov and Bauer. Altur dropping to 15th (2.45), Sibilla dropping to 17th, De Maar 19th, Marcos 20th, Polanc 21st and so on.

A stage-win tomorrow won't help anyone to attack Wisniowski, but of course there's still a huge chance for guys like Kump, Van Asbroeck or Rowe to move up to the GC podium. If they finally start sprinting to podium finishes.

To be fair, the sprint competition is fierce: Kennaugh (51pts) defending the points lead by one point, as Goss (50) moves up to 2nd. Kump (44) and Holloway (38) still in striking distance though. Bazzana (104pts) now leading by almost twenty points on Hsu (86) in the KoM classification. With only two Cat4 climbs tomorrow, his polka dot is secured (if he finishes the race).

One DNF today. Contreras suffered from the crash.
