5 Jours de Dunkerque - Stage 2
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_000.png

The first of four flat stages. And an easy one today. Again no crosswinds and even though, there's a chance to attack KoM leader Sibilla with three Cat2 mountain sprints, those climbs shouldn't do much damage after all.

Altur leading the GC, but a few sprinters like Kump, Van Asbroeck and Holloway are well within striking distance for a great GC result at least. A few other top sprinters should aim for the stage: Van Heerden (who did quite well yesterday), Vantomme, Goss, Kennaugh (who crashed yesterday), an ever dangerous Appollonio or maybe Drapac. How about Rowe, who's also in contention for a great GC? Surely some more possible threats for the stage today.

A first attempt from seven riders to go clear is shut down by the pack: Ostergaard, Naesen, Pedersen, Brynjolfsson, Bohli, Huynh, W Walker.
Ostergaard with a next attempt, but just like Kanerva, Oka and again Huynh, he's brought back by the pack for the second time.

Four riders eventually form the break of the day, with one rider, who already was part of the break yesterday:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Tolhoek (4th in KoM / 5pts, + 3.31 in the GC)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Naesen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Bohli
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Chen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_002.jpg

Second day, second "major" crash in the pack. Opposing to yesterday's big crash, it's "just" 8 riders involved today:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Joseph
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kulppi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Breschel
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Atkins
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kanerva

The latter two won't recover too well from the fall and lose minutes today. Good news for the three former though, as they make it back to pack easily.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_003.jpg

Naesen and Bohli appear to be the strongest in the break and they fight for the KoM lead. Tolhoek scoring points as well, but Naesen (one sprint) and Bohli (two sprints) take the prime positions in the three sprints. We have a tied KoM lead today:

Provisional KoM: Naesen 24, Bohli 24, Tolhoek 21

The peloton is only two minutes behind with 28km remaining and is looking in control so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_004.jpg

Yap. Teams like Lierse, Indosaat and Orange shared the work and chased down the breakaway to reel them in with 7km to go! The sprinters will fight for line honours today.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Ji pulling the pack into the final 5km of the stage, as they seem to set up a train for Goss here. Also Orange is already strong in numbers and trying to bring Kennaugh in position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_005.jpg

And indeed those two teams set up the trains, with several riders hanging on for a "clean" sprint picture:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Kumppcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Holloway
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Van Heerden

Vantomme even further behind, but at least showing interest.. Holloway, Van Heerden not yet in a promising position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_006.jpg

Indosaat's train now a bit faster than Orange, but they are still looking good as well.

Hayakawa now right behind Goss, with Guillén and Reinhardt catching his wheel.

Van Asbroeck now ahead of Kupfernagel, who's leading his "train" to the right side of the road now. Van Heerden finally catching a wheel (Kump) and also Vantomme appears in the picture..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_007.jpg

Goss and Kennaugh head-to-head with both still a leadout ahead of them! Hayakawa right behind them, now leaving Gossy's wheel.

Kupfernagel struggles to keep his pace and so does Van Asbroeck!

Appollonio obviously stronger and he kicks under the kite: Rowe and Kump still behind him, while Van Heerden/Vantomme struggle to move forward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_008.jpg

Goss is losing his prime position with the leadout riders now finished! Kennaugh in the sole lead with Hayakawa right behind him!

Guillén and Reinhardt still trying to hang on. Appollonio, Rowe and Kump trying to go past Goss.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_009.jpg

Kennaugh still leading with only a few metres to go! Hayakawa going strong towards a great result: wil he even go past Kennaugh?

Goss finally with some better speed and he's surely in contention for a podium finish: just like a strong Reinhardt and Appollonio, Rowe, Guillén! Kump now trying to go past Rowe, Kupfernagel recovered from his weakness, but they are all fighting for maybe the last bonifications..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_010.jpg

..cause pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh takes the stage ahead of an impressively strong pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Hayakawa! Kennaugh definitely proved his speed here and his leadout did a great work as well. Sure to say, that this is a welcomed result for Orange, who hadn't the best opening stage - to say at least.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt lungs in for 3rd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Goss and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Appollonio! What a strong sprint from Reinhardt. Surely a rather unexpected podium finish for him.

Rowe (6th), Kump (7th), Van Asbroeck (10th) and Holloway (11th) couldn't score bonifications, which is good news for race-leader Altur. Also Van Heerden (13th) with a disappointing day and he will need to step up his game if he wants to sprint ot his 5th stage-win in this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/4jd/MG17_4jd_2_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Altur still leading the GC by 8 seconds on Jans and 12 on Kump. Rowe, Van Asbroeck and Holloway all moving up into the Top-10 with still 20 seconds on Altur. A shared lead in the points classification between Altur, Kump and Kennaugh (25pts each). Naesen and Bohli leading the KoM rankings.
