Tour de Langkawi - Stage 7
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_000.png

Final stage of the Tour de Langkawi 2017, another rather short panflat parcours, that features one mountain sprint and the opportunity for the sprinters, to at least fight for line honours and the points classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_001.jpg

The break of the day is formed quickly into the stage and it's eight riders - like yesterday:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Costa (tied 2nd in KoM with 22pts)
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Kasa
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Vila
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Hsu
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Kanerva
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Koch
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Eiking
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Paluta

Costa with an easy opportunity to go for the sole 2nd in the KoM competition, but - believe it or not - he does not care about the mountain sprint and manages to score no point towards the mountain competition. A missed opportunity, even though we're just talking about minor points for the rankings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_002.jpg

30km remaining and the peloton looks in control of the break so far: Sauber (still waiting for Salleh's first stage win here), Aeropostal (Granjel Cabrera) and cycleYorkshire (for yesterday's stage-winner Rowe) as those teams leading the chase and the gap is down to 1'24" at this point.

It's then the usual business: the pack narrows the gap to about a minute for the final 10km of the stage, but opposing to yesterday and the other flat stages before, the teams in the chase suddenly stop working for a few kilometres! This would grow the lead of the escaping group back to over two minutes and it's clear, that we will see a breakaway win today. Not the smartest move from the teams with top sprinters, as that will also hurt their sprinters' chances to claim the points classification..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_003.jpg

So as the stage will go to the breakaway, let's jump straight into the crucial moments: no one really tried to escape in the final kilometres, so it's now Hsu launching the sprint rather early within the final 2kms! He's the best bet in this group - according to his skillset - and his speed looks promising as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_004.jpg

Most of his breakaway companions couldn't follow, but Hsu seems to have overestimated his power! With still a kilometre to go, he's suffering from his efforts and looks dead empty.

Vila now easily going past him, while Eiking and Costa as the first chasers ain't looking good either..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_005.jpg

They are all suffering except of Vila! Hsu still holding off Eiking, who does not look like he could go for a late acceleration. Same goes for Costa and Koch on the further positions, yet racing towards a Top-5 on the stage..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_006.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/and.png Vila takes it easily! He was by far the strongest in this final sprint, where all other early escapees couldn't really put up a proper sprint. Thanks to the peloton stopping the chase for a while, Andorra Cycling Project can celebrate a nice stage victory on this final day here in Malaysia!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Hsu rolls in for 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Eiking, as there were no more changes in the order of the remaining escapees crossing the line. So pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Costa and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/lse.png Koch complete the Top-5 ahead of Kasa, Kanerva and Paluta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_008.jpg

Some top sprinters will have to talk to their DS after the stage, as they just compete for a sprint for the 9th place. Which may be goods news for points leader Valls afterall:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera wins the bunch sprint ahead of teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Dall'Antonia and yesterday's stage-winner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe. Vingerling, Krieger, Meyer and Bennett complete the Top-15, while Haller (22), Salleh (23) and Leung (28) miss out on points for the points classification..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrc.png Valls is the overall winner of the Tour de Langkawi 2017 and it's definitely a deserved victory: two stage-wins, the KoM crown and thanks to today's fail by the peloton, he also went for a shared victory in the points classification: his 50pts are tied by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Meyer. Cabrera (49), Leung (48) and Vingerling (47) came close, but those minor points today indeed only helped Valls (and Meyer, actually).

A good race for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Krasnoperov as well, as he survived the flat stages to finish 2nd overall. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Penasa 3rd with the same time as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Tvetcov and the biggest surprise pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png De Marchi. What a tight decision for the final podium spot! Penasa lost all hopes for yellow in the second mountain stage, where he wasn't at his best. Still a good race for all of those three from 3rd to 5th.

Same goes for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Salinas as 6th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/teb.png Hacecký as 7th. Last year's race winner with another good GC result in Malaysia. A rather quiet 8th for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Cataldo ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bcp.png Karnulin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Bennett, who round up the Top-10. The latter two with a strong first mountain stage, where they unluckily weren't rewarded with a gap on the next group (with Bennett at least getting bonifications as 3rd on the stage).

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/red.png Anacona adds further points for Team Reddit, who should be happy with a 2-11 in the GC here. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/azt.png Stetina a solid 12th ahead of local hero pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Ahmad Zamri.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/langkawi/MG17_langkawi_7_010.jpg

With Valls taking the GC, a tied points win and the KoM honours, it's a proud pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Ahmad Zamri stepping onto the podium to celebrate his win in the U25 classification. Certainly a great moment ahead of his home crowd. The 25 years old Malaysian rode a good tour here, with a decent 13th place in the GC and wearing the white U25 leader shirt for a week. Definitely a nice output for Sauber Petronas, which also could celebrate the prologue win from Chavanne. In the sprints, Salleh looked good on a couple of days, but never had the perfect timing or position to take a stage-win on home turf.
