The tour kicks off with a nearly 5km prologue, who will have one clear favorite: Chavanne as by far the best prologue specialist and so it's his stage to lose. The pressure is even bigger with the Tour de Langkawi certainly as one of the most important races for his team Sauber Petronas.
Anyone to challenge the big favorite today?
Vandewalle with an early and rather long lasting best time:
6'15" as a time, that now has to beaten in order to snatch a good result today.
Leung as one of those favorites for the stage, who might hope to fool Chavanne somehow. And the 23 years old prologue specialist delivers a great time:
6'07" and therefore eight seconds faster than Vandewalle!
Hofer clearly missing out on this fabolous time, but he's strong enough to finish as provisional 2nd on the stage:
+ 7" and so ahead of some more notable names so far..
Vingerling + 7"
Kreuziger + 8"
Bouet + 8"
Kneisky + 9"
Ma + 13"
The latter, Haijun Ma, surely as the most disappointing stage contenders so far..
Krasnoperov as one of only very few GC contenders, who actually come with a decent prologue skill. The climber obviously has a great day and he's showing some strength already on the first of the seven days here in Malaysia:
+ 7" as provisional 3rd!
Stannard as the second big favorite behind Chavanne. He's looking fine, but as he crosses the line, it's pretty clear, that Leung rode a fantastic time earlier on:
+ 1" as provisional 2nd. Good ride, but Leung has been outstanding, it seems.
Mullen as another promising rider today, but he does not deliver:
+ 10" on Leung, which won't be enough for a Top-10 result in the prologue..
And for the top favorite: Chavanne is a beast in prologues and there's no excuses for him today. He's racing a fast and aggressive ride and...
..yap, that's dominatig: 5'57" and the first to finish the course under six minutes! Ten seconds faster than Leung. Looks promising for the stage win.
Robert as one of those remaining specialists, who potentially could challenge for that awesome best time:
+ 14" as provisional 4th behind Chavanne, Leung and Stannard..
Bille as a nother pre-race favorite for a Top-10 result in the prologue. And wow, he's been pretty great today:
+ 9" as 2nd, just a second faster than Leung!
It's getting louder at the roadside, as local hero Ahmad Zamri has a late start. The young Malaysian with only outsiders chances in the prologue, but he's definitely the most promising local hero for the GC here (and the U25 competition, too):
+ 24" as 18th on the stage. A solid result.
Meyer as the last real challenger for Chavanne. The Aussie not only aiming for the stage podium today, but also trying gain a great position for tomorrow's first sprinter stage (where he could potentially slip into yellow, if he misses it today):
+ 16" as 6th on the stage. Solid enough, though not special. A chance for yellow tomorrow.
Chavanne did what he came for: taking the prologue. And he did it in style, crushing the competition easily and giving Sauber at least one day in yellow. That's definitely a way to kick off the tour. Well done.
As already said, Krasnoperov (8th on the stage) finished as best of all GC contenders. 13 seconds gained on Valls, 15 seconds on Penasa, 26 seconds on Bennett. To name a few. No big deals with two mountain stages to come. But not bad either.
