Giro d'Italia - Stage 18
SportingNonsense
Stage 18 is the return to the mountains, and a stage that takes on two ascents of Mt. Etna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-1.jpg

13 riders went in the breakaway, and we see a combination of many of the previous linked attackers.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Buchmann
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Kastrantas
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Marzuki
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Pedrero
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Potts
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Shushemoin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Siskevicius

10 of these riders were in the big Stage 15 breakaway - ultimately unable to keep up with the 3 GC attackers in the move. Joining them today are Potts, Marzuki and Rosskopf - three riders more commonly seen attacking on the non-mountain stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-2.jpg

With a long flat section before the climbing today, none of the Top 20 GC riders fancied today as their chance to emulate Bongiorno and Konig.

Yesterday's crash clearly worried some managers, and once the race hit the early Etna slopes, some were proven right to be worried.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Canty was in the first group of 4 to be dropped, which is clearly bad news for the support of Morton.

A larger group was dropped a littler later, containing a more significant injury.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-3.jpg

23rd overall pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Sosnitskiy is the rider in trouble.

Hugo Boss themselves are not untroubled by injures, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Benito having been seen to be struggling for a few days now. But they've no shortage of climbing domestiques, and it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ablenado setting the pace on this first climb - keeping the breakaway in check, and causing the weaker riders to drop.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-4.jpg

The riders in the break vary from 71 mountain to 76 mountain. Laengen, Ludvigsson and Majka are the best, with Konrad on 75. The one exception is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Potts, whose mountain stat is 62.

He is clinging on to 5th in the mountains competition, but needs to score to prevent that dropping further. But he just isn't good enough on the climbs, dropping with 6km to go. Bafflingly, Siskevicius waits for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-5.jpg

Back to the peloton they go.

The KoM story has already moved on from Potts. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka wears the jersey, but has a 26 gap to make up on Alarcon. Marzuki, Ludvigsson, Rosskopf and Laengen are ranked 10th to 13th in the competion, and also seek gains today.

Majka is the one to win the first Etna climb though! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson is 2nd, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Laengen 3rd. Climb too hard for Marzuki and Rosskopf.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-6.jpg

The break have a 4 minute lead on the breakaway at the top, and we now see the same mid-stage attackers as on Stage 15.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Dzhus
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ivanov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Novikov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Figueiredo

They chase after the break, down the descent and on the flattish section - with the final climb looming on the horizon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-7.jpg

They get the gap to 35 seconds but haven't quite connected when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Shushemoin kicks off the aggression in the breakway - at 13.5km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Carapaz is now pace setting, and the lead of the breakaway is 3'24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-9.jpg

The attacks in the break have cast Boom, Marzuki and Rosskopf away - with Kastrantas and Pedrero clearly on the limit too, and are soon dropped as well. The mid-stage attackers are not giving up, but finding it harder to make those final inroads.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka attacks! He fancies a chance at a second stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Carapaz continues to set a blistering pace. He is preventing others from attacking, while also closing the gap to the breakaway - 2 minutes now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-12.jpg

We are into the final 5km. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka has a lead, 44 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad, img]https://pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png[/img] Laengen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Shushemoin. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Buchmann has just been the next rider to let go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-13.jpg

The peloton is down to 33. No attacks yet - but some idiotic riding, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König being sat at the back of this somewhat stretched group. The Dutchman realises first and starts moving forward, then the Czech does too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-14.jpg

But it may be too later, as the group is splintering, and also attacking! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Henao Montoya strikes first, just as they catch Laengen, Ludvigsson, Konrad and Shushemoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-15.jpg

From a 30 second lead at 2km to go, to caught at 1.2km to go - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka's hopes are dashed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-16.jpg

Henao himself has opened a gap. Behind him the peloton hasn't yet completely split - but it's clear to see who is stronger, as they are at the front. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton continuing to look strong, but with rival pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits right with him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Cattaneo too, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-17.jpg

If there are to be gaps, they're not going to be big, as we enter the final kilometre and the last sprint for the line. Cattaneo looking the strongest we've seen him on the climbs - as Majka is now caught by the chasers too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Sergio Luis Henao Montoya wins the stage! Back to back victories for Ferrero - Samruk!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-19.jpg

His final gap is 9 seconds, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits taking 2nd. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon finished strongly, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton fading. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve just did enough to be given the same time, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Cattaneo in amongst them too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-20.jpg

Only in the final sprint did gaps form down the field.

Majka ended up 7th at 30 seconds, then at 38 seconds we have pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-21.jpg

Then on the same time is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Nibali and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-22.jpg

Some time lost for 5th overall pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bongiorno, he is at 1'09 with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi18-23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König didn't finish so bad, but lost it with his positioning, and is at 1'22 with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Formolo. Just 10 seconds in front of Kolesnikov, Carapaz, Ludvigsson and Brambilla.

So in the GC race Velits has eked out a slightly larger advantage to Morton - who is now closer to Henao in 4th than he is to Velits. Monsalve closes the gap to Bongiorno for 5th, while opening up one on Abal. König stays 8th, but only 6 seconds ahead of Cattaneo.

Kruijswijk slips behind Talansky, Galta and Reis, and on to the same time as Brambilla. And Carapaz' impressive ride helps him up 2 spots to 20th. Sosnitskiy ending up dropping to 40th, and with an injury, that's likely to fall further.

Henao now moves into 2nd in the Points classification, cutting Alarcon's lead to 12. Morton 23 behind and Velits 25 behind. Meanwhile Majka cuts Alarcon's KoM lead to 16.

After two days of success, Ferrero are into the teams classification lead. Going from a minute down to a minute up on Gazelle. Hugo Boss lost ground today, without a good 3rd best finisher.

All riders were within the time limit, except for a control team rider.
