The penultimate flat stage. One last rest before three consecutive mountain stages. Just a short ride today too, only 122km.
And let's face it. Everybody wants to be in the breakaway today.
These guys made it:
Barbin
Declerq
Foliforov
Kastrantas
Oliveira
Paterski
Potts
Prevar
Yates
Potts is now down to 5th in the KoM competion, and only one point ahead of Morton and Velits. There's a chance for 6 more here though, and he is keen.
But he isn't good enough to take it. Barbin takes the points instead, from Prevar and Yates, all picking up their first points of the race.
You wonder if Evonik have missed a trick here, in letting Potts be their man for the breakaway - given that two of the three 78 hill riders in the break are in this move, Siskevicius being the 3rd.
These are the key stats of the riders in the break, sorted by sprint stat.
Rider Fl Hl Rec Sp Acc Yates72 76 67 73 78 Barbin69 78 70 71 75 Paterski72 75 71 70 69 Potts73 73 68 68 71 Prevar72 78 68 67 73 Declerq74 73 70 67 67 Kastrantas73 75 65 62 73 Oliveira72 73 71 61 65 Foliforov72 71 74 61 59
But the chase is on!
Lövkvist comes first, and Majka helps too - clad in the KoM jersey.
Slight problem though. There's 31km to go, for the peloton, and they trail by 14 minutes. So yes, breakaway for the win.
They are nearly 9km ahead on the road, and stick together into the final 10km - with the gap still over 10 minutes. As the table above indicates, Yates is the strongest sprinter in here, followed by Barbin and Paterski - who already has a 2nd place from Stage 14.
Oliveira attacks with 8.4km to go!
But they don't let him get far - and with Barbin chasing him down on an uphill section, the Portugese rider does not have much chance.
This puts some of the break into a bit of difficulty: Potts, Kastrantas and Foliforov.
But they do make it back as the sprint begins, with Yates, Barbin and Oliveira on the front.
Immediately Oliveira struggles, and Prevar seems unable to challenge - as Barbin and Yates pull away.
Race radio interrupts the sprint with news of a crash. 5th overall Bongiorno has gone down!
Yates is the strongest sprinter, but Barbin is looking faster today.
It's a battle of the wildcard teams, and it is going to be a success for Ferrero - Samruk! Enrico Barbin takes the win.
Yates is 2nd, while Prevar does finish as the best ProTour rider, taking 3rd. Kastrantas beats Paterski for 4th.
Oliveira, Potts, Declerq and Foliforov complete the breakaway finish order.
Back to that crash, and 10 others were taken down by Bongiorno, including three riders on the fringes of the Top 20. Vasyliv, who is 20th, plus Sosnitskiy and Scarponi. Buchmann, Silva, Oss, Canty, Gough, Markus, Siskevicius and Vangstad being the others.
But to add to the chaos was that the crash caused a split bunch - with many GC riders being quite poorly placed.
The peloton reduced to a group of just 48.
Galta being the 50th rider, and having to chase on his own.
But the larger group behind him includes Cattaneo, Talansky, Konig, Nibali, Olivier, Kirsch - and probably a few others too.
The peloton hardly have anything to race for though, and they do all kindly sit up and wait.
To the great relief of Team Puma - SAP, who sent everyone back for Bongiorno, Ciolek included.
No organisation in the peloton for the sprint, so one rider is comfortably able to sprint away and take an easy 10th.
Sadly for him, that makes it one of his better flat stage results ... 10th for Guarnieri.
Also prominent were Zabel, Coquard, Howard, Van der Lijke, Avelino and Enger - with Boev, Docker, Groenewegen and Vesely also making the Top 20.
Drama isn't over for the stage though, as the Giro organisers bring down the big time limit hammer very harshly. With the break so far ahead, and this being a short stage, the margins were thin.
Last of the crash victims Markus and Silva trailed in with Sutterlin and Benito, 13'37 behind the lead. They were fine, but a few hundred metres behind them was a group of 8, who has been dropped towards the tail end of the stage. And they are now out of the race!
There was actually one of the crashed riders here, Gough, alongside Liphongyu, Soler, Stoenchev, Jungels, Cancellara, Dumoulin, Brockhoff and Frison. Thats the first rider lost for Vesuvio, Podium Ambiton, Aker and Aegon. It was two riders lost for Aegon actually, and also Iberia - who now join Strava and Wiesenhof in having just 4 riders left.
Speaking of teams, Gazelle did not take advantage of the opportunity for more teams classification gains today, missing the breakaway. Ferrero's presence does fling them back into contention though, gaining 10 minutes to move into 2nd, 1'28 behind Gazelle. Vesuvio were the next highest team involved, but they are 7th at 47 minutes.
