Giro d'Italia - Stage 16
SportingNonsense
Stage 16 is the final hill stage of the race. One last chance for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Siskevicius,
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Prevar, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Barbin to use their hill stat advantage. But a hill stage late in a Grand Tour, and an increasing breakaway trend, has another outcome that would not be a surprise.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-1.jpg

Hoping for that outcome are 5 riders:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Ignatiev

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-2.jpg

Clearly a long day on the attack yesterday has not dampened the appetite with these riders, as four of the five were in yesterday's breakaway - only Ignatiev was not.

Through that, Majka picked up 41 KoM points to go 10th, while Ludvigsson was also a new entry at 13, with 30 points. They were both keen to add to that today.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka won the first two climbs, for 16 further points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-3.jpg

There's 55km to go from the top of the Category 2 climb of the day, and at this point the breakway leads by 5 minutes and 46 seconds.

Pendletons, Aker and Ayubowan showed good intent to chase earlier in the stage, but on the climb just gone, they weren't there to keep it going. Leaving it to Hugo Boss instead. And in fact, the breakaway gained 3 minutes on the climb! This took them to that gap of nearly six minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger then came back in the descent to lead the peloton, with some help from teammates. Aker aren't the obvious pace setting team today, as Galta isn't a standout hills rider amongst the contenders, but maybe he is feeling particularly good today.

Crash on the descent! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Siskevicius is involved.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-16.jpg

Also former stage winner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly, plus Affonso, Heider, De Vos, and Stoenchev.

The breakaway are now approaching the final climb, the Muro di Grassano. It is to be climbed two times, with only a short descent in between. And still the breakaway lead by 5 minutes, it's looking good for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-17.jpg

Attacking first are two men who know how to win a stage at the Giro. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka both have two stage wins. A time trial and a sprint for the Russian, in 2014 and 2015. For the Pole, two breakaway wins - one a year for the last two years.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-5.jpg

It all comes back together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka goes again, and once again wins the climb ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-18.jpg

It's definitely going to be a win for the breakaway now, and Majka keeps going. Down the descent and back to the Grassano for Round 2. Ignatiev has faded, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom - the two strongest puncheurs in the break, are trying to fight back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka leads by 40 seconds though, and is looking strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Carapaz is leading the peloton onto the climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon right on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-8.jpg

The peloton splits, and just 25 remain. 26th is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König. Up to 6th overall after yesterday but struggling to recover so well today. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk has also been caught out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-9.jpg

Konig just about makes it back on though, as now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve lead the group - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon has dropped back alarmingly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-10.jpg

No such drama up front on the final climb, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Majka continued to ride away from the others. He makes it a hat-trick! Stage 18 in 2015, Stage 15 in 2016 and now Stage 16 in 2017!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-11.jpg

The peloton are into the steep final kilometre.pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk trying to fight back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-20.jpg

A flying finish sees pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom catch and pass pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson for 2nd place. It's 4th for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad, but Ignatiev has been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton takes 5th. Finishing strongly ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-13.jpg

There's a spread but nothing gapworthy, with the same time going to Henao, Nibali, Abal, Bongiorno, Reis, Cattaneo, Alarcon (only 15th), Formolo, Olivier, Brambilla and finally Galta. All from Morton, finishing 1'51 behind Majka.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-14.jpg

That does mean pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png König could not keep up to the top! He should have been able to, but suffers a bad day. All that time gained yesterday, and 53 seconds of it are gone today. That will push him down to 8th, behind Monsalve and Abal. He is at 2'44 today, just behind Ignatiev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi16-15.jpg

And 12 seconds in front of Vasyliv, Kolesnikov, Kirsch, Sosnitskiy, Carapaz, Aru, Scarponi and Kruijswijk.

All three of our top hill sepcialists finished in a larger group at 4'37. Looking at how the breakaway went, it does appear that it was not all about hill stat today.

Alarcon continues to lead the points competition, but Morton is closing in somewhat. 11 gained today, to come within 19, with Henao another 2 points back.

Meanwhile Majka moves 2nd in the KoM, just ahead of Kruijswijk - 26 behind Alarcon there. Ludvigsson managed 16, remaining outside the Top 10.

The U25 remains comfortable for Morton, with a 10 minute lead over the competition. Galta and Reis, 13th and 15th overall, are 2nd and 3rd here - separated only by 15 seconds. Olivier just over a minute further back in 4th.

And Konrad has helped Gazelle extend their teams classification lead on Hugo Boss to 4'35. They may not have found a stage win yet, but they are finding the successful breakaways, and we'll have to see if they can hold off Alarcon and co for the Teams victory.
