Giro d'Italia - Stage 14
SportingNonsense
Stage 14 is the sixth of the eight flat stages in the race, and ends with a sustained stint of climbing - although at little more than a 1% gradient.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-1.jpg

And with opportunities starting to run out, there is less time for results to be taken out of the race. Howard and Groenewegen have two stage wins each, while 8 other riders have podiummed - with only Ciolek having managed to finish in the Top 10 on every occasion.

For the fourth consecutive stage, Festina - Dexia get a man in the breakaway, and for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly it is the second day running.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-2.jpg

Also in the group are:
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pibernik
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Villella

And Stage 14 holds very good memories for Davide Villella. Last year, he joined a 7 man breakaway, which the peloton left too late to chase. An attack with 3km to go led to a stage victory. One year on, he will look for the same outcome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/GiroItalia/PCM0424.jpg

Back to the present day, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly won the 5 points on the climb of the day - to add to the 10 that he already had.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-3.jpg

And hopes for a Villella repeat could be looking good, as only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Hugo Boss show themselves on the front of the peloton all day. With 36km to go, the breakaway lead by 6'30 - much more than the 10km/1 minute chasing ratio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-4.jpg

Finally, with 29km to go for the breakaway - and 34km to go for the peloton - the sprinters teams appear.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Haugard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Keough lead the way - showing confidence in Ahlstrand and Howard. But they've got a lot of work to do!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png eBuddy are helping too, and all the big sprinters are congregating near the front - including their leader Grosu, who seems to have recovered from his crash a couple of days ago.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-6.jpg

20km to go, and the breakaway lead by 4 minutes, and it is 3 minutes at 15km to go. This is going to be tight.

Looking at their stats, Paterski appears to have the edge if they all stick together.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski7275717069
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Villella7277676580
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly7172686572

But will they stick together? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Villella attacks. It only lasts a kilometre, but he goes again at 12km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-7.jpg

He does open up an 18 second lead this time. But the lead to the peloton is now down to 2 minutes, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla amongst those chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Villella leads on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-9.jpg

6km to go and the gap isn't falling so much, stuck at 1'40. There's good unity in the chasing trio of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pibernik and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly, and they catch Villella with 6km to go. And immediately pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly jumps from the back of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-10.jpg

Crash in the peloton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-11.jpg

It's towards the back of the pack, with no team leaders involved. Silva, Santos, De Luna, Yates, Turek, Benito, Fonseca, Eyob and Abetisyan.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Bayly leads into the final 5 kilometres. 20 seconds on the group, a further minute to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-12.jpg

And that peloton is now lining up it's sprint trains. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Kragh Anderson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Kvist are there for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand - albeit with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Boev between the leadout men.

It's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Young and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Boivin for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard, then the third train: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Te Brake, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-13.jpg

The miscellaneous sprinter train appears to be following eBuddy - but the lead rider pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely is actually alongside Grosu. Then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen - with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Ewan just in shot. Interesting to see Tinkoff so prominent today, having not been previously. Ulanowski, Modolo, Roelandts, Petit, Van der Lijke and Coquad are there, but further back.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski now realises he can't wait on a group sprint, with Bayly riding away, and attacks. There's just 2km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-14.jpg

He halves the gap in a little under a kilometre, the same again would be enough, as we are set for a second consecutive Festina vs Vesuvio battle for the win - final kilometre now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-15.jpg

In the peloton it's a battle of leadouts. eBuddy, RBC and Spotify.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-16.jpg

And at the front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Cameron Bayly makes it two wins in a row for Festina - Dexia! Their race has come alive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski takes 2nd, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Villella outsprints pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pibernik for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-18.jpg

And the loser is ... pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard. He wins the sprint for 5th, that could otherwise have been a third stage win. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely is 6th from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi14-19.jpg

Grosu couldn't match his leadout, finishing 9th behind Roelandts, with Groenewegen completing the Top 10 - before Coquard, Porsev, Boivin, Modolo, Zabel, Van der Lijke and Guarnieri. Ciolek was the only rider to Top 10 every sprint stage, but he didn't take part at all today - down in 97th.
