The third day in South Africa and it's the only flat rated stage (except of the TTT). Some minor hills and an undulating profile, plus some crosswinds at the start of the day (49kmh), make it a tricky stage though.
Kreder looked very strong so far and he will obviously target today's stage as well. Amongst the best pure sprinters, we do have Compal's duo Scully/Matthews and King, while guys like Kuboki or Mansilla will love the slightly hilly profile of the course.
The story of the break of the day is told quickly, as the first three riders to attack would eventually form the breakaway group:
Thaouta
Logar
Braico
Neither a minor GC threat nor anyone, who shows interest in the two intermediate sprints halfway through the stage. It's "just" about fooling the peloton to stay away until the end..
So we're jumping straight into the final 24km of the race: Meiji and Kraftwerk, as well as Compal unsuprisingly showing their colours in front of the chasing pack. The breakaway's gap peaked at about eight minutes, but is down to 1'21" at this point.
Braico appears to be the strongest of the trio, as he drops his former breakaway companions with still 17km remaining. He's facing a tough challenge with still some heavy crosswinds and the pack just a minute in arrears.
And he's reeled in just 5km later! With still 12km to go, those teams, that work for today's most promising sprinters, delivered. Kraftwerk, Compal and Meiji are in control of the race and there's no further attack to give them another challenge, it seems.
Yes, indeed. The rather quiet stage is nearing it's end, as we are inside the final 3km now. As to be expected, we see the three mentioned teams forming trains for their respective leaders:
Tleubayev - Matthews - Scully
Zhao - Hatanaka - Kuboki - (Zaini)
Jans -Mansilla
Scheit - Park - Kreder
Van Garderen
Froome
Except of King, that's the top favorites for the stage all at the front and also McEvoy ain't too far behind.
Compal and Isostar are mixing their trains up, while Hatanaka/Kuboki moved to the very front now. Kreder's train still looking strong, too.
Van Garderen trying to hang on, he seems to be strongest of the GC contenders today and obviously, he's willing to defend the points lead.
Meiji's duo still at the front, with Park/Kreder now trying to catch up. Scully trying to go past them, while Mansilla kinda lost the perfect moment to hang on with Scully!
Scully with a strong kick into the final kilometre and he's now fighting against Kreder! Kuboki couldn't hold his speed and he's losing ground very quickly.
Not the ideal situation for Mansilla and Matthews (who's still in the mix, it seems), as they may get boxed in by the slow Meiji trio now..
Scully easily holds off Kreder, who does not look like he could compete with the Kiwi in the finish! Park still hanging on for third, but now it's Matthews moving forward with some awesome speed! Mansilla trying to catch his wheel, but he's not been able to go past a struggling Kuboki yet..
Dominating win for Scully! The Kiwi delivered big time, launching his sprint in the perfect moment and easily holding off Kreder and all those other guys, who tried to sprint for line honours today. This stage must have been Compal's big (and only) target for this tour, so it's surely a pleasure to win it..
..even more, since Matthews also went past Kreder with an incredible fast finish..
..to complete the double: Matthews makes it an 1-2 for Compal! What a strong finish he had here. Kreder surely didn't see that one coming.
Still a good 3rd for Kreder, who finishes ahead of Mansilla and an impressive Van Garderen eventually. Key points for Van Garderen, as he indeed defends his lead in the points classification (51pts) ahead of Kreder (40) and Ulissi (37), who sprinted to a 9th place on the stage.
Caruso still the GC leader ahead of Van Garderen and Kreder in 3rd. Only five riders lost a few minutes today (two of the early break and a few crash victims from the previous two days).
