Stage 13 is a day of hill climbing, and looking at the route, seems to be the best chance for the hill specialists to taste some success. Siskevicius is a 3 star favourite for the day, with Barbin and Prevar as two star favourites, spread amongst the GC riders.
Just three in the breakaway:
Egger
Bayly
Sinkeldam
But soon two of the race's perennial attackers charge across to join them:
Marzuki
Rosskopf
We can't go a stage without having a crash, and with 8 fallers today, the biggest name is Avelino. Schadlich, Brockhoff, Dockx, Zubov, Durbridge, Dupont and Van Baarle with him.
The fact that Dockx is still standing though is an ominous sign. And indeed, he is too badly hurt to continue, abandoning the race.
Marzuki, 6th on 39 points, and Rosskopf, 8th on 27 points, have picked up scatterings of KoM points throughout the race. They have the chance for more today, but Egger takes the top points on the first climb.
The 2nd categorised climb is the biggest of the day, awarding 10 points as the only Cat 2. Egger again is the strongest, taking the points ahead of Rosskopf.
There's a curious pattern throughout the stage, where the peloton makes good gains on the break on the flat or downhill sections, but lacks the urgency on the climbs - losing ground there. Here, with 2 climbs and 36km to go, they lead by 2 minutes - with Sinkeldam dropped.
For a 3rd time, Egger attacks the rest and takes the climb solo. This time he has gained a minute, and won't be waiting for him - partly because the other three have decided to wait for the peloton themselves.
Egger has 2'17 over the summit, but only 33 seconds by the start of the final climb. Konrad, Oss, Barbin and Vosekalns lead the chase.
3km from the summit, Kirsch is a surprise attacker! Vasyliv follows.
Scarponi attacks next, hoping to take advantage of his strong descending - meanwhile Kirsch and Vasyliv have passed Egger.
Kirsch and Vasyliv take the summit with a 40 second advantage - Egger is caught, Scarponi didn't make a gap. 8.7km to go.
Aru attacks on the descent. Soon followed by Monsalve, Figueiredo, Nibali and Cattaneo.
Vasyliv is notably a better descender than Kirsch, and he takes the lead as they race for the finish. Festina and Vesuvio have often been rivals, but they're allies today.
Behind them only Aru got a gap, but he did get one - 30 seconds - although still 37 behind the leaders.
Vasyliv attacks from the front inside the final 2 kilometres!
Kirsch tries to respond!
Back in the peloton, Konrad is leading out Formolo, and Siskevicius. Shushemoin and Henao Montoya are also at the forefront.
Yuriy Vasyliv wins the stage for Festina - Dexia!
2nd place for Kirsch, while Aru takes 3rd.
Opportunity missed for Siskevicius? He takes 4th place, ahead of Formolo and a fast finishing Kolesnikov.
Velits takes 7th, ahead of Monsalve, Alarcon and Henao.
A time gain of 1'09 for Vasyliv and Kirsch was not really their priority, compared to the stage, but it does return Vasyliv back into the Top 20, and consolidates Kirsch' placing of 24th. Aru gained 28 seconds, staying 19th.
From the breakaway, Marzuki picked up 8 points, compared to 12 for Rosskopf (and 22 for Egger). They'll need more than that to support their hopes of at least finishing in the Top 10 of that competition by the end of the race.
