Stage 10 brings the second mountain stage of the race.
It's all about one climb today, the Plan di Montecampione. It's a long one, so plenty of opportunity for the GC contenders today.
Alarcon has already built himself a good lead - will that change today? Others will be disappointed with their opening efforts, and looking to regain time lost.
Kolesnikov was key two stages ago in launching Henao to 3rd in GC, but is going for a different tactic today. Determined to be in the breakaway - while the peloton disagrees, and chases after him. Initially he had company from Pedrero, De Gendt, Hermans, Sinkeldam, Kochetkov, Cancellara and Gusev - but he left them all behind.
Eventually the peloton relented, allowing Kolesnikov to go clear, with 7 others with him.
They are:
Foliforov
Cheung
Kolesnikov
Rosskopf
Hermans
Sinkeldam
Villella
Kochetkov
Yet another breakaway for Rosskopf, and Hermans too. Villella is a stage winner from last year, while it seems Sinkeldam must now be over his suspected injury from the Stage 2 crash.
The breakaway provides some nice company for Kolesnikov, but immediately as the 19km Montecampione climb begins, he attacks and leaves them behind. The lead on the peloton is 3'30. If he isn't going to win this stage, it is going to require a strong pace from behind.
And perhaps we will get that. Velits has had two disappointing stages, but is in no mood to hang around today. He attacks 16km from the summit.
Morton, Monsalve and Henao Montoya follow but Hugo Boss have the numbers. With Alarcon are Benito, Ablenado and Herrera, with Carapaz sat on his leader's wheel, seemingly waiting his turn.
Hugo Boss therefore make up 5 of the 14 riders in this group. There is also Reis, Nibali, Abal, Formolo, Laengen, Galta, Cattaneo, Bongiorno and König.
They aren't giving up behind. The next group of chasers are Talansky, Kastrantas, Olivier and Vasyliv. And Majka is now going deep to help Brambilla recover - which Silva is tagging on to.
The next 9 down the road are Siskevicius, Giogier, Dzhus, Vosekalns, Kruijswijk, Ludvigsson, Sosnitskiy, Aru and Ignatenko.
Velits has got a gap, and is sweeping past remnants of the day's breakaway.
The Morton, Monsalve and Henao group did not stay clear as Hugo Boss set to work. In particular, Ablenado is putting in an incredible ride. Alarcon sits with him, but Carapaz is suffering to keep up - and there's a gap behind him! Morton, Monsalve, Henao and the other contenders have all been blown away.
Olivier and Talansky have caught that chasing group now though, with the eBuddy duo of Majka and Brambilla trailing by a minute (from the front of the group at least - they're closer to the back).
Ablenado delivers Alarcon to Velits. Still 11km to climb, they are 1'50 behind Kolesnikov.
Monsalve and Morton have made it up to Carapaz and are at 3 minutes.
Not much further behind, at 3'24, are Henao, Cattaneo, Nibali, Abal, Reis, Galta, Bongiorno and Oliver.
Konig is dropping back now at 3'59, and Majka is with him.
They are soon to be swallowed up by a group of 19, at 4'12. Brambilla is back in here, along with Talansky, Formolo, Siskevicius, Vosekalns and Sosnitskiy.
There's lots of shuffling of groups as the climb continues though. While Alarcon and Velits ride on, around a minute clear of the rest. Morton and Monsalve are now back with Henao, Cattaneo, Nibali, Abal, Galta and Reis. Also in that group are Ablenado and Carapaz, plus Foliforov and Rosskopf from the breakaway.
Brambilla is a further minute back, going solo. Add 20 seconds for the group of Bongiorno, Olivier, Talansky and Formolo. 32 seconds more for Konig now, with Vasyliv for company.
Here's a full overview of these later groups at this stage:
Kolesnikov still leads, with 7km now to the finish. Over the horizon come Velits and Alarcon though - 1 minute behind, and closing.
Morton and Monsalve have threatened to go clear a couple of times, and now this time they seem to have done it. Henao Montoya with them.
It may be more that the others couldn't keep up though, as the trio have lost a little ground still up front - 1'10 to Alarcon and Velits now.
Alarcon can be very satisfied with the situation, but now he goes for the kill. He attacks Velits.
Off he goes, and he powers right past Kolesnikov, taking the lead. Just over 2 kilometres remaining, he is on his way.
Henao, Monsalve and Morton are still together. They are closing the gap to Velits now, at 50 seconds.
Dropping a minute further back are Cattaneo, Nibali, Galta and Abal. Reis was her, but is now starting to suffer.
A minute later, Olivier, Brambilla and Talansky are now together - and have made it up to Carapaz, Ablenado and Foliforov.
Formolo and Bongiorno are back with König and Vasyliv.
Up front, Jose Alarcon is closing in on the line. A well earned celebration today for him and his team, as he takes his 5th Giro stage win over the last two years!
Velits did catch Kolesnikov, but the Russian outsprints him for the time bonuses of 2nd place. Their gap to Alarcon was 56 seconds in the end. But while Velits' hopes of overall victory may be slipping away, along with everyone else, it is the 'everyone else' grouping that he needed most to gain time on today, and he has!
Henao Montoya finishes strongly for 4th at 1'29. This gains him 20 seconds on Morton and Monsalve, at 1'49.
Abal emerges strongest of the others, taking 7th at 3'10. 19 seconds in front of Cattaneo and Nibali, with small gaps then to Galta, then Reis, then Olivier - the Dutchman gaining on Talansky and Brambilla at the finish.
The end result is that Jose Alarcon has more than doubled his race lead, up to 4'17 on Morton. Henao is now 3rd at 4'55 with Velits up to 4th (5'32) and Monsalve 5th (5'51). Abal drops to 6th, but gains on those behind him, with Cattaneo 7th, Nibali 8th, Kolesnikov jumping up to 9th, and Talansky rounding out the Top 10. Galta climbing 5 places to 11th, while going the other way are Formolo (down 5 to 15th) and Vosekalns (down 9 to 16th). Morton's lead in the U25 classification is even bigger, 5'57 on Galta.
Alarcon now leads the Points and KoM competitions too, with Hugo Boss and Ferrero somehow ending up with the same time for the stage. Hugo Boss stay 3'28 of the PCT wildcards then, who are now up to 2nd - all other teams losing at least 8 minutes.
